Our staff were again very pleased with The Great Aussie Bush Camp venue at Kincumber, the activities offered and the camp staff. Our students were well behaved and took part in the activities with great enthusiasm! 2020 Enrolment survey

Thank you to those families who have already returned the survey which went home earlier this term, asking

you to inform us as to whether your child/children will be continuing at Newington PS in 2020. We have already

identified 26 students who are leaving our school between now and the end of the year and won’t be returning

in 2020. We need this information now so that our planning for classes and staffing in 2020 can be better in-

formed. It is crucial to know accurate numbers as the Department of Education will only staff schools on the ac-

tual number of students enrolled. If you are yet to complete and/or return the survey note please do so by early

next week.

Term 4 School Statement

The Term 4 Statement of Accounts were sent home in Week One of this term. We would appreciate your

prompt payment of any outstanding items by next week please.

Dogs on school premises

Under NSW legislation, all dogs, apart from police and corrective service dogs and genuine assistance dogs, are banned from school grounds. I ask that if you have a dog with you that you stay outside of the school gates with your dog.

Sound Scout

An estimated 1 in 10 children suffer from hearing loss which left undetected can lead to speech, learning and

behavioural problems. The World Health Organisation recommends that all children should have their hearing

screened around the time they start school and ideally again in Year 3 & Year 5 in line with NAPLAN. Any child

identified with learning or behavioural problems should also have their hearing tested.

The Sound Scouts hearing check is a simple way to identify if a child has a

hearing issue, including listening difficulties in noise. The test incorporates

the science of a hearing test in a fun interactive game. Evidence based, ac-

cessible and delivering immediate results, it’s the perfect screening solution.

Sound Scouts is now FREE for all Australian schoolchildren (aged 4-17)

thanks to support from the Department of Health and Australian Hearing.

2020 Student Leadership The student leadership process is well underway with nominations completed this week for our Year 5 aspiring

leaders for 2020. Those nominees are now busy preparing a 1 minute speech with impact, to present to their

Stage 3 peers. From this process, Stage 3 will vote for the candidates to go forward for election by the school

(Years 2-6), which will take place Friday, Week 7 (29 November). We have increased our number of leaders for

2020, from 2 captains and 8 leaders, to 2 captains and 10 school leaders. Year 5 have been further supported

in their preparation for Year 6 with a wonderful whole day workshop UPP: Aspire Higher, Unleashing Personal

Potential’ (see page 10 for photos). The response from the students and the teachers was very positive, per-

fectly encapsulated by this reflection:

‘I’ve learnt that you can be a leader without a badge. A leader is not a person who uses you for

everything, it’s who gives you a go before themselves.’ Ela A [5F]

Excitingly, we will also be trialling online voting with our Year 4, 5 and 6 students with paper voting by Year 2

and 3 students. I would like to acknowledge Mr Dalamagas in assisting Year 5 with this initiative and Mr Fifield

for leading the process. We sincerely wish all nominees the greatest success and learning experience in their

efforts to achieve candidacy on Monday. Obviously, not all students will be successful in reaching the next

stage, but as we all know, one of the biggest tests of character is how we handle ourselves during times of dis-

appointment or loss. We are confident that all our Year 5 nominees will be great role models throughout this

process and know that there will be many other leadership opportunities in Year 6. We wish them all the best.

Kindergarten Orientation The first of our two part Kinder Orientation program will be held on Friday 8 November. It will be wonderful to be

able to welcome many new parents and children to our school, as well as many familiar faces. As part of a tran-

sition to school program, our orientation days hopefully will provide useful information for parents, as well as an

opportunity for us to highlight the many programs that operate at the school. Over the 2 days, the Senior

Strings, Senior Band, Ukulele & Guitar groups, Junior and Senior Choirs will perform; our school leaders, Lilly

and Xavier will address the parents; 6 kinder children— Callan, Brooklyn, Cooper, Chloe, Maeve and Tyler will

also speak about their first year at school and other kinder children proudly modelled our school uniform. The

P&C Executive will speak with the parents about the aims, programs and events organised by the P&C. An op-

tional evening session for parents only, who can’t attend the day sessions, will repeat the important information

on Wednesday 27 November at 7.00pm in the Library. A huge thank you to all staff who will be leading, man-

aging and participating in the kindergarten orientation process

Notices & Reminders

Student medical forms During Term 4 we will be updating our medical records systems to ensure we have the most up-to-date infor-mation on your child’s health.

If you have a child with a medical condition you will receive a copy of the new forms in the mail and will need to fill them out and return them to us as soon as you can.

The good news is we have already started collecting some of this information, which means less for you to do. The new forms will help us collect your child’s important medical information and the introduction of new sys-tems will mean we'll be able to better manage the daily and emergency health needs of your child.

SPOTLIGHT ON LITERACY

AND NUMERACY

Debating

Newington PS has two debating teams. Our local team represents our

school in the Granville, Holroyd and Strathfield School Education Are-

as Debating Program. The other team is taking part in the NSW Prem-

iers’ Debating Challenge.

The major difference between the teams is the amount of time

given to prepare for a debate. The local team is given their top-

ics prior to the debate in order to prepare, whereas the

premier’s team has only one hour to pre-pare for their debate. Teams do not know the topic or which side of the debate they are on until one hour before the debate starts.

Congratulations to both teams on their successes this year. The premiers

Team came second in their division, winning three debates out of the four.

The local team won two debates out of four. A special mention to Emily

Hirschorn who has made the Primary Schools State Debating Challenge

(PSSDC) representing the South Western Sydney Regional Team.

Debating was a magically,

thrilling experience that will

help me for future life skills.

My confidence grew on an

unexpecting high level. I think

it was worthwhile to join. Arni

Mankotia-6D

Debating is a skill that you will need when you

grow up, for job interviews and group meetings.

To be honest, I wasn’t really interested in debating

for a long time. But in 2018 I tried out for fun, and

surprisingly I made it in! It has really help enrich my

public speaking skills. I am much more confident

now and have great debating skills. It is a great ex-

perience. Canice-6D

Debating has been an experience that will stay with me for

a lifetime. Along with meeting new people and creating true

friendships, the reason I was so drawn to the persuasive art

of debating was the development of the crucial skills of

public speaking, and the ability to react calmly under pres-

sure. I feel so much more capable and confident when it

comes to this specific field of learning and I am so thankful

to the AMAZING teachers, Mrs Cross and Mrs Drury, who

without none of this would be possible. Debating is an ex-

perience that I will cherish forever, and I encourage anyone

who is interested to go on and have a go. (It’s worth it!)...

Chess Gala Day Newington Public school participated in the Interschool Chess Gala Day held at the Sacred Heart Primary School in Villawood on Monday the 4th November. The school team comprised of Alexander Li(5A),YiFei Hu(1M), Pat-rick Jirgens(1G) and Marcus Du(2A).This tournament is a 7-round ‘Swiss’ competition. This means that all players play 7 games and no-one is ‘knocked out’ of the tourna-ment. The winning school is determined by adding the 4 highest scorers from each school. The talented NPS team fought with grit and determination to be the second place victors. We are very proud of these young men. Well Done!
