Flying Start This week our topic of discussion was the types of homes we live in and the types of homes that Australian animals live in. We read the story, Possum Magic, by Mem Fox, and drew our homes with pastel crayons. The students are getting noticeably familiar with school routines such as walking in lines following one another and answering their names to the morning roll call. We have one Flying Start session left next week. We will return on Monday 29

th July for the first Term 3

session. We hope to see you all again next Monday from 9.30am until 11.00am.

Term 2 Social On Tuesday night we held our second social of the year. School socials allow students to relax and have fun with their friends and teachers to celebrate a successful term of school. The theme for this social was ‘favourite cartoon character’. Many students and parents went to great lengths to prepare some amazing costumes. A big thank you; to all students who attended the fun night, their parents for their preparation of costumes and to the teachers who enthusiastically celebrated with the students.

Emily Simpson dressed as a Vulpix, Pokémon character.

Katelyn Kelly makes a gorgeous fairy.

Ellie and Sianabel made a Catdog costume and spent all

night by each other’s side.

Crystal and Montanna enjoyed a good night dancing at the

social together.

Mia, Flo, Abby and Kiarna are dressed as Peppa Pig

characters.

Issy Cole and Regan Selmes are gorgeous clowns for the evening.

Luigi and Mario make excellent teachers!

Home and Emergency Contact Details The colder weather has now set in and the chance of having to evacuate the school due to heavy snow or extreme weather increases. It is important that we have current contact details in case of an emergency. If you have recently changed your mobile phone number, changed address or any other emergency contact details please contact the office and have these details updated as soon as possible.

Stage 3 Gymnastics Year 6 students had a great session with Vaughn consolidating their gymnastics skills. Gross motor skills are a really important area to develop in young people. These stage 3 students are extending their movements, stretch and skill in a variety of gymnastic techniques. The quality of their handstands are to be admired! Oh to be that young again! Well done, Stage 3!

Sam McGregor crab walks backwards!

Ronan Berney bunny hops through the honeycomb hoops.

George Lee extends his skills by completing leg lifts

backwards along the beam.

Year 6 get into position for the balancing competition!

Look at this amazing handstand technique!

Developmental Play Students have been experiencing a range of fine motor activities during Developmental Play on Friday afternoons. Fine motor skills involve the use of the smaller muscle of the hands, commonly in activities like using pencils, scissors, construction with Lego or Duplo, doing up buttons and opening lunch boxes.

Lennon Osborne and Nathaniel Hockley practise tall towers.

Who can make the tallest tower before it crumbles?

Cooper Galway and Mia McDonald attempt to thread beads onto spaghetti pieces. Who will be the first to reach the top?

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking

On Monday, four very talented students from CPS travelled to Jerrabomberra Public School to participate in the regional Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition. Evelyn Dark and George Willis represented Stage 2 and presented their speeches with increased confidence and high levels of engagement. The audience was a combination of students, parents and teachers from a range of schools in our ‘zone’ such as Queanbeyan, Cooma, Wee Jasper and Braidwood. After presenting their prepared speech, they then had to present an impromptu speech, with only 5 minutes of preparation time. Stage 2’s topic was ‘A good idea’. Evelyn spoke about how important it is to share and listen to other people’s ideas and gave great examples of these. George exquisitely connected his impromptu speech to reducing plastic as ‘a good idea’! George received high commendations for his impromptu speech from the adjudicator and audience. Evelyn was awarded ‘Runners Up’ for the entire Stage 2 competition! An amazing effort!

Next up, Charlie Colley and Isabella Cole represented CPS in the Stage 3 division. Charlie thoroughly engaged the adjudicator and audience with his humorous speech on how he would welcome his Japanese friend to Australia. Isabella spoke clearly and confidently about the incredible opportunities and experiences Australia has to offer and her families’ experience moving from Malta to Australia. For the impromptu section, which is worth 50%, they were given the topic ‘A waste of time’. Charlie spoke about littering as a waste of time and how it effects the environment. Issy associated this topic with social media being a waste of time! (There were a lot of nods from the audience!) Issy received enormous praise from the Principal of Jerrabomberra Public School, Chris Hunter, as she accepted the last minute offer to represent CPS late on Sunday evening. Thank you so much Issy, you really shone!

It must be said that these four Crookwell Public School students delivered prepared and impromptu speeches to a very high standard and should be extremely proud of how far they have come in every aspect of the competition. We are all so proud of you!

George Willis and Evelyn Dark are thrilled with their results!

Michael Dark couldn’t be prouder of his daughter, Evelyn, as

Runners Up.

It was a family affair for the Willis’. Thank you Adrian, Betsy and Charles for supporting George.

Isabella Cole and Charlie Colley look sharp… and relieved,

once the speeches were completed.

Charlie and his mum, Karen, are ecstatic about this amazing

experience.

Peer Support Students are becoming more resilient through exploring the theme in Peer Support! It is great to see! Listening to students’ ideas and contributions to whole school discussions after assembly each week has been really beneficial. Well done CPS on moving forward, taking on new challenges and making others feel safe and respected!

Billy, in Year 5, works with his younger group members:

Michael, Jim and Nathaniel.

Owen enjoys spending time with his Peer Support buddies Lane and Shae.

Dustin, Charlotte and Haris learn about seeing the positive side in situations.

Joshua Ross demonstrates a perseverance strategy with his

group members: Thomas, Poppy and Crystal.

Angus Barber is always having a great time during Peer

Support! Keep up the positivity!

Athletics Champs - the results are in! The athletics carnival seems like a long time ago but we have only just finished off the last of the high jump due to having so many other sporting and extracurricular events. The district athletics carnival has been pushed back to Friday week 2, Term 3 (Friday, 2

nd August).

The age champions for each age group have been collated including students that caught up events due to other sporting events. Points for age champion are accrued by placing 1

st, 2

Book Club Issue 4 We have received two orders for this issue that have no name on the order form. If you did an order for $37 or $15 could you please contact the front office and leave your details with them and we will get in contact with you to confirm. Once these orders are confirmed they will be ordered but they will arrive separately from the rest of the schools order.

School readiness talk If you are unsure if your child is ready to commence school next year, in 2020, please come along to a school readiness talk by our Kindy teachers, Miss O’Neill and Ms Caffery. The talk will be held at Crookwell SDN Preschool at 3.30pm until 4.00pm on Wednesday 3

rd July 2019. We will be discussing

how to know when your child is ready to commence school and what to do to prepare them.

Why read 20 minutes at home each day? If a student is read to and then starts reading themselves from Kindergarten they would have read the equivalent of 60 school days by the time they complete Year 6. Want to be a better reader? Simply read!

Boys Touch Football The boys played two matches on Thursday, 27

th June, at

Carr-Confoy Park, Goulburn. Their first game was up against Bradfordville, a team the boys had convinced themselves they could not beat due to the amount of representative players in the opposing team. Crookwell would not accept defeat and managed to pull off a nail-biting victory (6-5), sending them through to the next round against Wollondilly Public School.

This second match really saw the boys come together as a team. The encouragement, team work and skill displayed throughout the match was inspiring. Not one player can be singled out because each and every one of them played exceptionally well. Crookwell came away with a 9-3 victory.

Congratulations boys and good luck in the next round against Goulburn East Public School.

Ear to ear grins all around!

I am not sure who was more excited, the boys, or Mrs

Thorpe?

2019 Semester 1 Reports – An Explanation Dear Parents/Carers,

On Monday 24th

June reports were mailed home for every student. Each year we refine our reports to suit not only changes in curriculum, but also acting on feedback from staff and parents. Our reports must adhere to departmental guidelines in many respects.

One of the main focuses for our staff is to ensure consistency with our assessing and reporting. Our teachers have spent many sessions working together to analyse student work samples and evaluate the levels of achievement. Students are tracked on syllabus outcomes in order to identify where each child sits at this point in time for the grade expectations. These identify what the expected outcomes are for students by the end of the semester. Teachers can then determine the level of achievement for every student.

OVERALL LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT

Kindergarten – Year 6 reports:

The Department of Education mandates that all student reports are to use a standard achievement rating scale. Below is our interpretation and how we will report to our families:

Outstanding Achievement For a student to attain Outstanding they would have an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and

readily be able to apply this to other areas. They would be working on an individualised or adjusted learning program and be achieving well beyond stage level (i.e. if in Year 2

they would be working at and achieving at Year 4 or higher).

High Achievement For a student to attain High they would have a thorough

knowledge and understanding of content. The student would be working at and achieving above grade level (i.e. if in

Year 2 they would be working at and achieving at Year 3 level).

Sound Achievement Students achieving Sound are working at achieving at their appropriate grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they are working at and achieving at Year 2 level). It is the expected level of

achievement according to the child’s grade.

Basic Achievement For a student to receive Basic they would have a basic

knowledge of the content and be working at and achieving below grade level (i.e. if in Year 2 they would be working at

and achieving a Year 1 level).

Limited Achievement For a student to receive Limited they would have a very limited knowledge of content covered and be working at and achieving well below grade level, even at an earlier stage

(i.e. if in Year 4 they would be working at and achieving at Year 2 or lower).

Parents should note that a ‘sound’ grade is a good grade! It means that your child is working where they should be at this point in time.

EFFORT

All students will also receive an effort rating for each subject area. Effort reflects how well a student has tried, the persistence and determination to achieve at the best level of which they are capable. Effort will be rated as:

5 – Excellent 4 - Very Good 3 - Acceptable 2 - Needs Improving 1 - Little/No Effort

I trust that this has provided you with some explanation of what to expect when sharing reports with your children. Any parents wishing for further clarification are most welcome to contact the school.

When you receive your child’s report you will notice that the report format has changed this year. We would greatly appreciate your feedback on the changes we have made. There will be a short survey that we would like parents to complete at Parent/Teacher interviews in relation to the new report format. We thank you in advance for your participation in the survey.

“Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” - Rita Pierson
