Crossrail is Europe’s largest construction project and is principally focused on creating a brand new underground rail service for London running from Reading in the West to Shenfield, near Brentwood in the East.

Consisting of 10 stations and reducing the time across the Greater London Metropolitan area, the project is a significantly high-profile activity under the constant scrutiny of regulators as well as the millions of Londoners who are following the project.

Crossrail was the subject of a television documentary in the summer of 2014, highlighting some of the engineering challenges that tunneling underneath the city entails, as well as the ever-present threat of incident.

The Challenge

Safety is one of Crossrail’s core values as they strive to complete the project by 2018 as safely as possible. Therefore, a tried and tested safety management system that would be flexible to their needs as an organization was required.

The primary reason why Crossrail selected Rivo was the scalability that a secure web-based system would provide them, in particular when they move operations from tunneling to station building and beyond.

It was also the ability for Crossrail to produce their own reports within Rivo that was a key factor – mainly because they have to provide slightly different reports to different legal entities and their contractor organizations.

• Reporting across the entire project by location, category, activity, and other factors which can be sliced and diced in a number of different ways.

• Ability to measure contractor performance on safety, allowing for benchmarking, communication to contractor and fulfilment of any regulatory reporting for the different contractors involved in the project.

• Senior management real-time dashboards (week, HSE, facilities) outlining a true and single compliance status broken down in the same way.

This also provides Crossrail with performance metrics for public consumption, to keep onlookers appraised of their safety record as well as other key measures and to maintain a healthy media reputation.
