We ATTACK POVERTY by providing food and shelter, homeless prevention services, health and nutrition support, homeowner education, heat and energy assistance, and adult literacy skills training. We partner with those in need to help them navigate along life’s most challenging paths.

We BUILD-UP YOUTH through mentoring, after-school programs, a top-notch resident camp, along with environmental, and leadership programs. All the while, we’re helping our community’s youth thrive by attaining important life-building skills as they make their way to adulthood.

We FOSTER VIBRANT COMMUNITIES by encouraging citizen involvement; attracting and engaging volunteers; creating opportunities and programs for arts and culture; and by collaborating with rural organizations to ensure healthy and vital communities.

We develop CREATIVE NON-PROFIT LEADERSHIP so that organizations and people can organize, become more self-sufficient and develop a coordinated network. Through a strong board of directors and staff, well-trained volunteers, quality improvement initiatives, research, and evaluation, we address the rapidly changing needs of our communities.

Together, all of these result in a better life for the individuals and families who call our communities home. And through your membership, we can continue to provide the stability, self-sufficiency, enrichment and opportunities that make a powerful impact in the lives of our children and families in need.

TrueNorth believes that every person living in Newaygo County should have food, heat, safe and affordable housing, and other basic necessities for their households. Unfortunately many families are in crisis, struggling to make ends meet due to job loss, low wages, fixed incomes, an injury or illness, or lack of affordable housing. TrueNorth’s Housing and Family Services strive to restore families to a condition that is not dominated by crisis and stress by meeting immediate, basic needs. Further, TrueNorth case managers routinely collaborate with other local human service agencies to help families create long-term solutions that prevent future crises and lead to greater self-sufficiency.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) is a national program started by the IRS to bring community partners and volunteers together to provide free tax preparation services. VITA is being offered locally and currently recruiting volunteers to help with the program.

Are you retired looking for a way to give back? Would you like to strengthen your resume? Do you enjoy helping people? Is volunteering something you would like to try? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then becoming a VITA volunteer is for you! But, really any adult who would like to help hard working families claim, keep and save the tax refunds they have earned can volunteer.

Most VITA volunteers prepare and file taxes for those in need, however there are some volunteer opportunities to be greeters, interpreters, or quality reviewers. Volunteers do not need tax preparation experience. To become a certified tax preparer, volunteers will have to complete online training. The online training takes approximately 20 hours to complete, and volunteers are asked to commit approximately 30 hours of service from the end of January through mid-April. Benefits of volunteering include improving communication and interviewing skills, learning technical tax preparation skills, and building computer proficiency.

To learn more about being a VITA volunteer in Newaygo County, please contact Lora Stevens at (231) 924-0641, ext. 119 or [email protected]. To register as a volunteer, visit http://abc-wm.volunteerhub.com.
