Crotched Mountain Racing

• The 2006-2007 season will be the 3rd season of the new Crotched Mountain Race Program

• The Crotched Mountain Racing program is owned and operated by the Crotched Mountain Ski and Ride Area

• The Crotched Mountain Race Club is a non-profit organization which– Promotes ski racing at Crotched Mountain– Organizes and runs ski races at Crotched Mountain– Provides an enjoyable social structure for the racers

and their families

Program Goals

• Teach solid skiing fundamentals first

• Introduce racing concepts as children progress

• Build confidence• Create great skiers• Have Fun

Program Age Groups

• 4-9 Tigers• 8-10 J5• 11-12 J4• 13-14 J3• 15-16 J2• 17-19 J1

Tigers (age 4-9)• Development team• Focused on building strong

skiing fundamentals in a non-competitive environment

• Typically no formal racing, but lots of fun races

• Divided into ability level groups• Training sessions are 9-12 on

either Saturday or Sunday mornings with a mid morning break

• Crotched Mountain had about 25 Tigers last year

Tigers (age 4-9)• Children need to be comfortable

on intermediate terrain• Children need to be able to ride a

chair lift• Parents may ski with children

during training sessions to help with the chair lift

• Age 8-9 overlap with the J5 program– Children need to be comfortable on

all terrain and all conditions to be happy in the J5 program

– Coaches will help parents determine which program is appropriate

Turning Tigers

Jumping Tigers

J5 (age 8-10) • J5 program is focused on skiing

fundamentals and primary race skills

• Training is 9-3 Saturday and Sunday

• Weeknight training is available 5-7pm on at least one weeknight

• J5 skiers may participate in 3-5 formal races per year

– Races are not mandatory– Coaches will help parents decide

when children are ready– 8 year old children are not eligible

to ski in state finals

J4 (age 11-12) • J4 program is focused on

advanced skiing fundamentals and core race skills

• Training is 9-3 Saturday and Sunday

• Weeknight training is available 5-7pm on at least one weeknight

• J4 skiers may participate in 3-5 formal races per year– Races are not mandatory– J4 and J5 attend the same

races, but race in different classes

J3 (age 13-14) • J3 program is focused on

advanced skiing fundamentals and advancing race skills

• Training is 9-3 Saturday and Sunday

• Weeknight training is available 5-7pm on at least one weeknight

• J3 skiers may participate in many formal races per year– Races are not mandatory– J3 races are pretty competitive

• 2006-2007 will be the first year for a J3 program at Crotched Mountain

J4/J5 Turn Training

J2/J1 (age 15-19)

There is no formal J2/J1 program in place at Crotched Mountain, but one will be established as younger children advance or if there are interested J2/J1 class skiers who wish to join the Crotched Mountain Race program

Schedule • Dry land training is Sunday 1-3 starting on

10/8• On snow training starts the 2nd weekend that

Crotched Mountain is open• Tigers train 9-12 on either Saturday or

Sunday– Each racer must select a Sat or Sun program

• J5 / J4 / J3 train 9-3 on Saturday and Sunday– Races are usually on Sunday and coaching is

provided for major off mountain races– Coaching at Crotched Mountain is available on race

days for those who do not race

• Weeknight training 5-7pm will be available 1 night per week for J5-J3

• A Christmas week training program is planned, but there are no details yet

Races • J5 and J4 racers participate in

the Buddy Werner League– 1/21 BWL Central region qualifier at

Crotched Mountain– J6 (7 and under are sometimes

allowed to participate in BWL qualifiers)

• J3 racers participate in NHARA J3 League

• There are several “open” races for J6 through J3 throughout the season

– 12/30 John Eneguess Memorial Open will be held at Crotched Mountain

• Race entry fees for races range from $30-$40 which includes a lift pass

Parent Responsibilities• Get children to training and races on

time• Make sure that skiers have the right

clothing for the weather• Let the coaches coach• If your young child needs chairlift

help or a little extra confidence, then plan to ski with the team for a few weeks

• At least one parent of each member of the program is required to work at 2 races

• Tiger parents have to bring a morning snack for ~ 20 kids once a year

Ski Equipment• Tigers

– Poles!!!

– Comfortable boots

– Skis chin/nose high

– Very young skiers might want somewhat shorter skis

• Racers– Good boots (3-4 buckles)

– Performance oriented skis• Stiffer than recreational skis• Forehead height giant slalom

skis• Optional shorter slalom skis• (use last years GS skis for

slalom this year)

• Keep skis tuned...– Learn to sharpen/wax skis

yourself for weekly tune ups

Team Clothing• CMRC is organizing a

purchase of team jackets and race suits

• Jackets are optional, but help coaches keep track of skiers while training– Kids jackets $45– Kids snow pants $20– Adult jackets $80

• Race suits are optional, but almost all J5 and higher racers wear them– Race suits ~$140

• If you have a race suit you need zip off pants too.

Steps To Join The Crotched Mountain Race Program

1. Buy a Crotched Mountain Season Pass

• $219 for 6 and up (before 10/15)

• $50 for 5 and under

2. Submit a Crotched Mountain Racing Application and payment

• $399 Tigers

• $499 J5/J4/J3

3. Everyone except Tigers need a USSA membership card

• $60 12 and under

• $125 13 and up

• Tigers who plan to race need a USSA card

4. Everyone who races needs a NHARA membership card

• $20 for all ages
