What is Baja SAE?
The Baja SAE (Society of Automotive
Engineers) competition challenges engineering
students to design, manufacture, test, and race an off-
road vehicle. At each of the three competitions held
each year, 100+ teams from around the world must
prove that their car is well-engineered, cost-effective,
safe, fast, maneuverable, and able to take some
serious off-road punishment. In order to do this, each
team must present two detailed reports, one for
design and one for cost, to industry judges as well as
compete in dynamic events.
The cars are put to the real test with the dynamic events, where the teams compete in
acceleration, suspension, maneuverability and more. Each competition ends with a 4-hour
endurance race, including obstacles such as creeks, jumps, hairpin turns, and other difficult
terrain. When cars break down, teams are able to perform on-the-spot repairs and get their
car back in the race. Baja SAE is a valuable and enjoyable event for all who participate, and
provides students with real world experience that cannot be learned in the classroom.
Who we are
Lehigh University first participated in the Baja
SAE competition (previously known as Mini Baja) in
1978. Since then, Lehigh has competed in 14 Baja
competitions, with half of those in the last 10 years.
The current Lehigh University Baja SAE Team
consists of 15 full-time students who are interested in
learning more about vehicle engineering and
manufacturing. Team members vary in age, major, and
experience level, although most are mechanical
engineers.
Lehigh Baja SAE is not a course, nor do students receive credit for it. It is a considerable amount of hard
work and a large time commitment including weekends
and late night hours after class work is completed. Students
join Baja SAE because they love it. They love getting their
hands dirty building and testing the car. They love seeing
something they designed go from a three-dimensional
computer model to a fully functional manufactured part, all
by their doing, while learning the skills required along the
way. And there’s the chance to drive the finished product,
an experience made even better by the knowledge that you
were involved in every step of creating that vehicle.

Our Current Goals
Last spring, a very young team, captained by
sophomore Alex Klinger, constructed a new car for the
June 2011 Kansas competition. The car sported the first
true gearbox used by Lehigh Baja and a frame 30% lighter
than our previous car. Unfortunately, unexpected issues
with the brakes at the Kansas competition prevented the
team from competing in the dynamic events.
This year, the team, still working under Alex’s
leadership, is working to improve the ’11 car with major modifications and make this our
best showing at competition yet. This means a new rear suspension, a re-designed brake
system, a new lighter seat, and more responsive controls are currently in the works for this
year’s car. The team will be competing in Auburn, Alabama this April, and hopes to beat its
previous record of 20th overall, achieved in 2009.
Why your support matters
It is the team’s responsibility to acquire the
appropriate funding and sponsorships to cover the
costs associated with the designing, building,
testing, and racing of a Baja SAE car. While the
Lehigh Baja SAE Team does receive limited
support from various academic departments at
Lehigh University as well as the use of the
University facilities, the majority of the funding
used to maintain the project is from private
sponsors. Without outside sponsorship, the group
does not have sufficient funds to produce a
vehicle, let alone cover the costs of travel to the
competitions. Only with support from private businesses, suppliers, and individuals is the
Lehigh Baja SAE team sustainable. You make this possible. We can’t do it without you.
When you support us, you support students:
• Gaining hands-on project experience
• Building important teamwork skills
• Learning what is not taught in the classroom
• Doing what they love
