KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM AND OPTIONS The National Curriculum in England states which subjects schools must teach in Key Stages 1,2 and 3. When you get to Key Stage 4, you have more of a choice as to what subjects you study. This booklet is about those choices. In Key Stage 4, every student will study the following:

Subject Description Yr9 Yr10 Yr11

English English Language & English Literature. 5 lessons 5 4

SOME QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS What do I need to know? Start by reading this booklet carefully. Make sure you understand what choices you have to make. Have REALISTIC expectations of yourself. Think about which subjects you enjoy, and which you are successful at. Where can I get information? It is most important that you talk to people. Talk to your teachers, brothers, sisters and friends in Years 9, 10 & 11 – ask them how they are finding their subjects. Talk to your Life Skills teacher and Careers adviser – find out if certain subjects will help you get on to the college course you want to do, or get into the career you wish to follow. Talk to your form tutor – he or she will be able to give you some guidance on where your strengths are. Talk to your parents / carers – they know you better than anyone! Choices and Preferred Options: It is not possible to organise all the courses around everybody’s main preferred choice. Therefore you are asked to indicate more than one preference. That’s why it’s important that, in each option block, you pick your ‘OTHER’ PREFERENCES just as carefully as your ‘PREFERRED’ OPTION. When do I need to give my completed form in? Who do I give it to? The deadline for handing the form in is Friday 9th March. Hand it in to your form tutor. It will not be accepted unless it is signed by a parent/guardian. Any forms handed in after this date will be marked as late. This means it is less likely that you will get your PREFERRED OPTIONS. Can I change my mind later on? No! The combination of subjects, students and teachers is complicated and extremely difficult to change. Please think carefully about your choices! What about the English Baccalaureate? This is where you achieve grades 9-5 in English Lang, Maths, 2 or 3 Sciences, MfL and History OR Geography. It doesn’t gain you a certificate, but the government think it is an important combination of subjects. Some universities like to see it as an achievement. 2 Universities currently have it as an entry requirement.

GCSE In Design Technology Qualification: GCSE grade 1-9

Curriculum Updates: What has changed

What you will study:

Assessment: How your ability is measured

50%- NEA Coursework Unit (40 hours) 50% Terminal Exam unit (2 hours)

Content: What you will learn The new qualification is modern and relevant, so students can learn about contemporary technologies, materials and processes, as well as established practices. Students will use their creativity and imagination to design and make prototypes that solve real and relevant problems, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

With the focus placed firmly on academic knowledge teaching of the new GCSE would focus more

heavily on scientific principles in design situations. This means learning how to use scientific experiments and mathematical calculations to help solve design problems! These are practical skills

that employers value

This more professional approach is also reflected in the coursework requirements teaching will focus on areas such as 3d hand sketching, isometric drawing and arts and crafts practical skills like use of

the woodworking lathe or soft soldering or brazing metals. It will not be an ICT heavy course.

For further information, see Mr Hallett (1-9 with graphics), Mr Newbold, Mr Cook (1-9 with Resistant Materials) Mr Marston (1-9 with graphics and resistant materials)

or Miss Sagoo (1-9 with textiles)

This new GCSE course is the replacement for all previous GCSE courses with the exception of Food Technology which has had its own separate qualification since 2016. Separate GCSE qualifications in electronics, graphics, resistant materials product design or textiles no longer exist from 2017 under any exam board. This new “all in one” course is an academically focused qualification. The exam content has been raised to an equal 50/50 % weighting with coursework. 15% of the final 2 ½ hour exam will be science and 15% will be maths. Coursework has been reduced to one project with a choice of two project themes or briefs being set by the exam board. The whole coursework project must be completed in the final year (Y11), the project briefs will y be released at the end of Y10. Students will be expected to undertake a variety of theoretical and project based learning tasks over the initial years of the course where they develop a wider understanding of all of the material areas (textiles, electronics and resistant materials including card and paper) drawing on their experiences at KS3. This breadth of knowledge will be required for the exam. Y8 students select a particular material area as part of their options choice to specialise in for their final year coursework project and one of the specialist sections of their final exam.
