“At the end of the day, you can either focus on what’s tearing you apart or what’s

keeping you together.”

Dear Students,

The month of March is ordinarily marked by a variety of celebrations. Be it on account of the International Women’s Day or the Festival of Colours. While the first one is a day marked by the reiteration of the concept of gender equality and the furtherance of initiatives for the achievement of the same, the second marks the onset of the season of spring.

However, the month of March, 2020 has been one filled with trials and tribulations for not just the Indian populace but for the entire world. The recent outbreak and even further the fast paced spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) has warranted the need for unprecedented measures at a global level. As far as the Indian scenario is concerned, the nation has gone into a situation of complete lockdown, which is a clear indication of the seriousness of the problem at hand.

As a proactive institution, the ICSI too has taken multiple facilitation measures for its stakeholders including its students. On one hand, where the face-to-face support services had been suspended long before the imposition of the lockdown and queries were being resolved through the Support portal; a temporary relaxation has been provided to our students in complying with the requirement of Pre-Examination Test and One Day Orientation Programme for enrolment to June, 2020 session on the other.

Times such as these, though are a rare occurrence; yet they are a reminder of the fact that before representing a certain nation, culture, religion, caste or creed, all of us represent a common group, i.e., the mankind. While the circumstances might have bound you all within the four walls of your homes, but to me these days have presented all of us with a unique and lucrative opportunity. We all have been bestowed with a vast expanse of the most expensive thing in this world, i.e., time. I would not just request but urge each one of you to utilize these given moments, to not only develop your core capabilities, your professional abilities, but hone yourself into becoming a better person.

It is in times like these that we get the opportunity to pursue our hobbies, our interests and our aspirations. And even more to try to prepare ourselves for the kind of future we seek.

With all these suggestions in line, and hoping that we all shall come out of this sooner than expected, I would close my words with the most important mantra:

Stay home, Stay Safe !!!

Wishing you all health and safety.

E-BANKING IN INDIAN BANKING SECTOR*

Introduction

E-Banking has become an integral part of the global financial environment. Improvement in technologies and financial innovations has made E-banking an intense part of the banking sector. “As day by day increasing the technologies are also increasing”. Technology has become the fuel for rapid change.

In earlier times, the banking customers were required to visit in a bank in order to transact their accounts in the bank but now by the help of E-Banking the customers do not need to visit in a bank and with the help of internet, customers can easily transact their accounts from anywhere. E- Banking is playing a major role that it’s improving the service quality and strengthens the banking sector because of the electronic payment there is increase in customer satisfaction level, increased productivity, reduction in cost of banking operations, settlement faster and in large volumes. The world has become a global village and it has brought a revolution in the banking industry because of increasing in the development of information technology.

Benefits to customers by providing e- banking services

1. E- Banking has helped greatly for the payment of utility bill now customers do not need to stand in long queues outside banks for this purpose.

2. Banking services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. 3. Customers can easily access their accounts through internet by sitting at home or office. 4. Now a customer can buy online or shop worldwide without carrying paper money with him

due to the growth of credit cards usage owes to e-banking. 5. Customers can also do their bank balance enquiry through internet.

Top 5 trends for digital payments in 2020

Here are the five key technology trends that we expect to shape the digital payments landscape in 2020.

a) The Hyper-Connected World

As technologies like 5G roll out, lightning-fast connectivity will become more usual – though not omnipresent. Businesses outside the conventional retail system will be able to take advantage of this by selling services and products to customers, near instantly, from anywhere. From an India perspective, the framework for 5G is underway, and is expected to help businesses investing in AI, data and 5G to run simultaneous processes and transactions all at once. Furthermore, the internet of things (IoT) could become a dominate force in micro-payments by transforming connected devices into payment channels.

b) Indian Banking will Experience Significant Disruption with Consolidations

Two major factors – UPI and banking consolidation – have begun to remarkably impact the Indian banking this year and would continue well into the year 2020. From April 1st, we will witness the birth of massive banking entities, with mergers of three public sector banks – Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank, and Corporation Bank. Earlier this year, State Bank of India merged its five associate banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank. Bank of Baroda later joined the fray by merging Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with itself. With the advent of these mega banking entities, the rise in dominance of NBFCs among retail and small business credit, the explosion of digital payment methods led by UPI, and the pressure to continuously optimize operations, Indian banks would need to significantly invest in building digital capabilities to sustain and develop core differentiators.

To pave way for growth in 2020, Indian banks would need to optimize and upgrade their core technologies to embrace the concepts of open banking. Banks would continue to leverage open APIs to create horizontal stack with fintech partners for customer interface, product & services, and infrastructure to cater to the growing digital payments demand. BCG suggests that by FY22-25 UPI will account for 59% of the market share for payments in the country, up from 17% this year. The quantum of opportunity can be gauged by the fact that only 10% of the UPI transactions in FY19 were accounted for by banks. The rest were initiated by consumer-facing fintech apps.

c) The Digital Disruption of POS – The Impact of eCommerce

The state of merchant POS (Point of Sale) is an interesting story in India. Industry experts suggest that while there are about 80-odd million MSME merchants, merely about 5 million POS machines are in operation. Though the POS ecosystem in the country seems to have doubled over the last five years – to about 4 million in FY19, and the Reserve Bank of India expects the number to cross 5 million by the end of 2021, the dissemination of traditional POS remains weak in terms of availability and viability. Moreover, according to reports, the POS share may dip from 20% of the current payments market to about 14% in FY22-25. Banks are also witnessing a sharp decline in the usage of cards at conventional POS terminals and ATMs.

Interestingly, digital payments in India seem to grow at a CAGR of 12.7% as per KPMG and may jump to Rs. 4,055 trillion in FY24 with a five-year CAGR of 20% according to CRISIL Research. POS is undoubtedly experiencing disruption with digital payments. The year 2020 will see an explosion of the digital POS ecosystem in the country, especially among the MSME segment. Many industry experts from large private and public sector banks in the country believe in FY19, more than 70% of POS registrations came from online-only merchants. Digital POS (based on NFC, RFID and QR code) will continue to grow phenomenally. In fact, with e-Commerce, digital POS may also impact the Cash-on-Delivery model and replace it with digital transactions. What may be even more interesting is that while there seems to be a decline of debit card issuance and usage, the contactless method of digital POS may result in an increased acceptance of cards (credit, debit and PPI) across smaller centres in the country.

d) Regulators to go Digital

Indian banking and financial regulatory bodies and industry enablers are increasingly embracing a wide range of AI, data gathering and analytical tools to create transparency and safety frameworks. We can already see this happening with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) having formed a new unit to strengthen its own frameworks in the face of emerging disruptive trends like cryptocurrency, blockchain and AI. This will assist businesses and banks to monitor overall systemic activity and predict potential challenges – and avert them before they become a threat.

e) Cybersecurity and RPA will concentrate Primarily on Fraud Prevention & Detection

As digital payments go mainstream, financial institutions are straining hard to continuously decrease their exposure to financial crimes and be compliant with evolving regulations. Customer data breaches, absence of professional cybersecurity talent, deployment of security automation and its integration with current systems will continue to plague banks and financial services firms. The increase of ‘digital’ in the financial sector will see more calls for robust cyber protection, which will be greatly influenced by cybersecurity innovations. Enhancing cybersecurity and fraud mitigation is poised to be one of the most crucial trends in 2020.

Moreover, Robotic Process Automations will continue to impact migration activities, data security & governance, and compliance management, especially in the wake of the recent and ensuing Public Sector bank consolidations. The prime application of RPA in the coming year will be in the field of data governance and fraud detection & management. Banks and payment players would like to drive intelligent automation with RPAs by incorporating AI, ML, and adaptive analytics to enable risk managers to create real-time fraud detection systems that will be reacting and adapting to new fraud signals, driving fast decision-making and responses to emerging fraud threats. RPAs-led intelligent automation in the field of financial fraud will gain grounds in helping banks and digital payments firms to earn consumer trust.

Conclusion

With the ongoing digital drive in India, the number of users opting for online banking is expected to double to reach 150 million mark by 2020, from the current 45 million active urban online banking users in India, according to a report drafted by Facebook and The Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In a report, titled “ENCASHING ON DIGITAL: Financial Services in 2020”, the two firms have highlighted the rising influence of digital in financial services and the transformation required to make the most of this revolution. “India could not be more ready for a digital revolution in financial services – with government interventions on one hand and growing consumer awareness on the other. Wide scale adoption of digital has the potential of reducing cost of acquisition and cost of servicing to 1/10th. This can substantially improve customer level profitability and can add to retail profit pool by $3 – 3.5 billion by 2020,” said Amit Kumar, Partner and Managing Director, The Boston Consulting Group, India.

India is in the midst of a digital revolution, with Internet users going beyond just search and social networking and moving to more mature activities like online shopping and banking. Already 70 percent urban internet users are digitally influenced during financial product purchase, that is, they use at least one digital channel during the purchase journey of a financial product. In terms of digital adoption, financial services is already much bigger than other categories like consumer electronics or travel.
