Elements of Virtualization
Application virtualization
• Single application image is stored and managed centrally.
• Application data is stored and executed in the data center
• High level graphical information delivered to client machines over the
network.
Desktop virtualization
• Virtualization extended to entire desktops.
• Desktop virtualization is based on a single-image management
Server virtualization
• Single physical server to host multiple virtual machines running server-
class operating systems. A hypervisor decouples the virtual machines from
the underlying hardware, with virtualized servers behaving as if they were
dedicated physical servers.
• Allows maximum utilization of expensive resources.
Storage virtualization - Storage Area Network (SAN)
• Allows multiple database servers to share a common storage
environment, which can be a single or multiple networked storage devices.
