Page 10: CSCL AFCCC Presentation 29 Aug 18 · 2018-09-11 · procurement, process and systems planning, ... public safety, product integrity, supply chain efficiency and market access. Questions

Idea of laboratories, adapted from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Aims are to:

• Provide a stake in the ground in a promising areas of research• Serve as storefront for CSCL business in both research and

engagement• Allow our staff to build expertise in important areas• Provide CSCL with continuity in its research agenda• Act as vehicles for engagement with industry.

The five most promising laboratories to be pursued in 2018 and 2019 are:1. Food Traceability Lab 2. Urban Logistics Lab3. Disruptive Technologies Lab 4. Scenario Planning Lab5. Talent and Capability Lab

CSCL Research Laboratories:

FOOD TRACEABILITY LABLead Researcher:Rose Elphick-Darling

Champion:Lyn O’Connell

Focus: Issues concerning visibility and traceability in food supply chains:• throughout the food product’s entire life cycle,• along the whole supply chain, end-to-end,• encompassing industrial, SME and regional enterprises, and• including issues of moral and religious credence (e.g. non-GMO, Halal).

Why this matters? Food traceability is important for business risk mitigation, public safety, product integrity, supply chain efficiency and market access.

Questions of interests End-to-end visibility / traceability in food supply chains (1á 1â)s Product integrity, pedigree, track and trace and product provenances Cold chain assurances The challenges of tracing blended and bulk productss Use of blockchain combined with other technologies

URBAN LOGISTICS LABLead Researcher:Roberto Perez-Franco

Champion:Paul Graham

Focus Issues concerning supply chains and freight in urban areas, including:• the movements of goods into, out from, through or within cities,• seeking to inform the decisions of industry and policy makers

Why this matters? Urban logistics impact the quality of life of millions of city-dwellers, as well as the profitability of businesses that operate in urban areas.

Questions of interests Impact of e-retail and direct deliveries to congestion in residential areass Impact and efficiency of commercial replenishment operations in urban areas s Optimisation of transport network assets serving urban areass Innovation in freight delivery, land use planning and regulation in citiess Application of new technologies to urban logisticss Evaluation of policies such as curfews

ESTABLISHING A DEAKIN-LED CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR INNOVATIVE WASTE MANAGMENT

Page 16: CSCL AFCCC Presentation 29 Aug 18 · 2018-09-11 · procurement, process and systems planning, ... public safety, product integrity, supply chain efficiency and market access. Questions

• Much of the waste generated in Australia is simply collected rather than being treated. Australia’s waste generation has increased significantly by 23% between 2007 and 2015

• China’s announcement that it will no longer take in foreign waste is reverberating through Australia’s waste industry. Other exporters of waste to China like Europe are going through the same crisis.

• The ban may accelerate innovations that make waste treatment and recycling economically viable, this would reduce environmental impacts and improve the economics of waste management and downstream supply chain activities

• Despite the importance, there is still no academically-based hub dedicated to identifying research based solutions, and gather experts the synthesise their knowledge on the area.

• Researchers, policy makers and waste practitioners have limited access to research-based dedicated knowledge hubs for identifying innovative solutions, technologies and opportunities associated with sustainable treatment of waste.

Page 17: CSCL AFCCC Presentation 29 Aug 18 · 2018-09-11 · procurement, process and systems planning, ... public safety, product integrity, supply chain efficiency and market access. Questions

• The proposed Deakin-led Centre of Excellence is a first step towards the

creation of a national innovation hub for sustainable waste management in

Australia. Its aims and objectives include:

Ø Creating a hub of research to bridge the gap between world-class practices

for the treatment of waste within an Australian context

Ø Standardising and creating a baseline performance measurement waste

treatment practices across the Australian industry

Ø Exploring the challenges thwarting innovative waste management

techniques within the Australian context and providing remedial solutions

Ø Forming a dynamic cross-disciplinary team to develop and promote

innovative waste management practices

Ø Giving a collective voice to support innovative waste management

practices, so to contribute to policy issues and agenda setting

• The centre will focus on three main key waste streams:

1. Waste generated through households and local government activities

2. Construction and demolition waste

3. Waste from offices, factories and institutions
