The  internship  interview  is  where  you  present  yourself,  your  narra4ve,  experiences,  and  skills.  However  the  internship  encompasses  a  significant  area  of  our  curriculum,  and  will  contribute  to  your  learning  through  the  professional  experiences  that  you  will  gain.  Therefore,  I  encourage  you  to  also  ask  cri4cal  ques4ons  that  will  help  you  discern  what  level  of  support,  opportunity,  and  learning  you  will  get  from  your  department.  Every  department  and  every  ins4tu4on  will  provide  unique  experiences-‐  be  mindful  of  your  needs  before  you  come  to  I-‐days.

Ques4ons  to  reflect  upon  before  Interview  Days:

• What  brought  you  to  student  affairs?

• What  experiences  made  you  ask  the  ques4on…”how  can  I  also  do  what  my  mentor/advisor/student  affairs  affiliated  person  do?”

• What  are  you  passionate  about?  What  fuels  your  sense  of  purpose?

• What  are  my  academic  interests  in  student  affairs?  What  are  the  func4onal  areas  and  departments  that  can  help  me  best  explore  those  interests  meaningfully?

• What  is  something  you  see  yourself  doing  aNer  your  masters  program?  Searching  will  give  you  a  sense  of  what  entry  level  job  descrip4ons  might  give  you  an  understanding  of  skills  and  experiences  you  want  to  acquire  over  the  course  of  your  two  years.  **

We  highly  encourage  candidates  to  explore  func4onal  areas  that  they  might  not  have  experience  in  currently.  Having  diverse  experiences  only  strengthens  your  educa4onal  journey.  Consider  the  following  skills  to  assess  where  you  have  experience,  and  where  you  could  gain  more  growth  and  exposure.

§ Supervision

§ Advising

§ Support  diversity/equity  ini4a4ves

§ Conflict  resolu4on

§ Crisis  response

§ Budget  management

§ Assessment  and  evalua4on

§ Training/facilita4on/teaching

§ Curriculum  design/program  design  *

How  will  the  internships  that  you  preference  also  give  you  exposure  to  skill  sets  and  experiences  that  you  do  not  currently  have?

*adapted  from  ACPA/NASPA  Professional  Competencies**  note  you  do  NOT  need  to  know  right  now  exactly  what  you  want  to  do  post  grad.  This  is  just  something  to  give  you  some  direc4on

Questions to help you discern “fit”

Off-‐Offer  Internships   [awf-‐AWfer]-‐  Noun

1. A  Bowling  Green  College  Student  Personnel  Masters  Student  who  works  at  a  cooperaEng  insEtuEon  for  their  internship  site.

2. A  person  who  enjoys  NPR  and  the  Beyonce  Pandora  StaEon    (See  also:  free  thinker,  independent,  responsibili4es  like  a  professional  staff  member)

Example:

“The  reason  I  originally  chose  my  off-‐offer  posi4on  at  Oberlin  College  was  because  I  felt  the  college  was  a  strong  ins4tu4onal  fit  for  my  personality  and  interests.    So  far,  the  fit  has  been  fantas4c  and  I  feel  very  happy  with  my  choice.

Being  involved  at  both  BG  as  a  student  and  Oberlin  as  a  professional  staff  member  means  that  I  have  access  to  twice  as  many  networking  opportuni4es,  twice  as  many  campus  resources,  and  twice  as  many  regions  of  the  state  to  explore.    Lastly,  I  really  appreciate  being  able  to  separate  my  life  as  a  student  from  my  life  as  a  professional  since  it  helps  me  structure  my  two  major  responsibili4es  in  way  that  feels  balanced  and  manageable.    I  would  highly  recommend  the  off-‐offer  posi4ons  to  anyone  who  might  enjoy  the  same

advantages  as  I  have  listed!” Leanne  Soter  CSP’  2014
