For the 5th consecutive year,
L&T Construction and ECC
Recreation Club joined hands
with the Indian Red Cross
Society to organize a two-day
blood donation camp on 22nd
& 23rd July 2014. L&T-ites
kept a tradition alive by do-
nating 650 units of blood in
two days, reiterating their re-
sponsibility towards the soci-
ety. Every unit of blood will
save the lives of four people!
The camp was flagged off
by Mr. S.N Subrahmanyan,
Member of the Board &
Dear Readers,
Do please contemplate on
these four visuals and the
depth of their contents.
The message will be more
far-reaching than a few hun-
dred words from the Edito-
rial desk…And true for all
times to come …
Society and Organizations
are so very interdependent

dent (Infrastructure and
Construction) L&T along

Hon. Treasurer-Indian Red
Cross Society and other sen-
ior executives from L&T.
While over 850 people volun-
teered to donate blood, only
650 could, as each and every
donor was put through a se-
ries of tests for blood group-
ing and haemoglobin count
of over 12.50 g/dL and physi-
cal checkup before donating
blood. About 200 donors got
screened out because of low
haemoglobin count and high
BP. As a feedback, the Red
Cross doctors stressed on the
need for a balanced diet and
sensitized health-awareness.
Red Cross Society compli-
mented the donors and L&T
for conducting such camps
and shared that such volun-
tary actions would ensure
ample blood for the needy in
the city.

WE DONATED 1312 UNITS
Repeated blood donations may help blood flow better, reduce viscos-
ity, and perhaps, help to limit damage to the lining of blood vessels
thus reducing the risk of arterial blockages
Every blood donor gets a mini physical check-up done prior to dona-
tion - blood pressure, haemoglobin, temperature along with a test for
13 infectious diseases
For each unit of blood donated, one loses about one-quarter of a gram
of iron, which is one of the best ways to avoid the health risks associ-
ated with iron overload
The body has a limited capacity to excrete iron, so it can easily build
up in and damage organs like the liver, heart, and pancreas; many
adult men and postmenopausal women are at health risk due to
excess iron

PRAYAS Trust, Chennai, celebrated its 18th anniversary on 15th October, 2014 with a grand event that kick-started with an invocation dance by two PRAYAS members. The tiny tots of the Prayas-run Day Care Centre stole the show with their following performance. Dr. Ambika Kameshwar, Founder Director of RASA (Ramana Sunritya Aalaya – NGO) and a multi-faceted personality (post-doctoral scholar in Natyabhinaya, an educationist, dancer, singer, choreographer and music composer) graced the evening as Chief Guest.
Mrs. Meena Subrahmanyan, President, PRAYAS in her welcome address said that the PRAYAS members were elated and inspired by Dr. Ambika’s ability to do multiple things at the same time and doing them right. After extending a warm welcome to the senior executives of L&T, founder patrons, members and other invitees, she narrated how PRAYAS had grown over the years from a humble beginning in 1996 with 5 members. “Today with a patronage of 360 members and equipped with a modern three-storied medical centre at Virugambakkam, we have been helping the ‘NOT SO PRIVELEGED IN OUR SOCIETY’ by treating more than 3500 patients in a month and have reached the first milestone of one lakh beneficiaries,” she said, amidst huge applause. She also highlighted the other services rendered by PRAYAS such as health and awareness camps, adoption of schools and NGOs, a tuition centre and a tailoring unit. She profusely
thanked the management of L&T for their continuous support and complimented the outgoing office bearers for their good work and promised to continue reaching out to more under privileged people with the help of the incoming office bearers.
Thereafter, Mrs. Vasanthi Satish presented the Secretary’s Report which took the audience on a colourful and informative journey about the different initiatives and works undertaken by PRAYAS over the past two years. Mrs. Rajini Kanappan presented a detailed financial report highlighting how every penny had been diligently spent towards the welfare of the society.
Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan, in his address, underlined the importance of a ‘service mind’ and commended the office bearers and the PRAYAS members for their charitable services and assured continuous support to all future activities of PRAYAS. He shared the unique way of how L&T teams voluntarily help the surrounding communities at various project sites and how the company was committed to Corporate Social Responsibility. SNS urged the ladies to participate actively to make the medical centre function more like a professional hospital.
In her short and sweet address, Ambika Kameshwar expressed happiness at the right energy within PRAYAS and shared her ‘take-home-philosophy’ on service. She said, “We must thank the people, who allow us to help them and they who receive are far higher than those who give.” She
narrated a story of how a sparrow put in its best efforts to douse a raging fire in a banyan tree in a forest by taking a little bit of water in its beak and dropping it on the tree repeatedly. Though the small quantum of water was not enough to control the fire, seeing the sparrow’s efforts and determination to make a difference, God helped the sparrow with rain. She said PRAYAS members were like the little sparrow that made a big difference and it was always an honour to be part of ‘a seva (ie) God’s Service’.
Expressing happiness over the presence of Charter President, Secretary and all the members, Mr. K.V. Rangaswami, Former President, L&T applauded the performance of PRAYAS and the contribution of its members. Reminiscing on its evolution, KVR said that at the foundation stone laying function, he had made a statement that it would branch out in a greater way and true to his words, today PRAYAS had
grown as big as a banyan tree.
“Every year the team has been performing well and the new members are excelling on the earlier achievements and accomplishments like the way it is happening in businesses at L&T,” he proudly said. KVR made a special mention of the medical services offered by PRAYAS and said that it occupied the pride of place among its various outreach activities.
The formal first session was followed by a variety of entertainment programmes and fun games rendered by colleagues from L&T and PRAYAS Day Care Centre. The event concluded with Mrs. Ezhil Jayakumar proposing the vote of thanks.
Today with a patronage of 360 members and equipped with a modern three-storied medical
centre at Virugambbakm, we have been helping the ‘NOT SO PRIVELEGED IN OUR SOCIETY’ by treating more than 3500 patients in a month and have reached the first milestone of one lakh beneficiaries”

She added saying, that soon after a child’s birth, the mother’s milk, known as colustrum is highly nutritious and that the child should be fed with it. Breast-feeding reduces infant mortality. Awareness on breast feeding needed to be spread more because modernization

The Egmore Children Hospital had started a Milk Bank which again proved the importance of breast-milk. All queries and doubts raised were answered by the doctor. The counselor spoke on the food that could be introduced to a baby of 6 months of age.
