CANADIAN THORACIC SOCIETY 2004 SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM
Sunday, October 24, 2004Seattle, Washington, USA
The Annual Scientific Program of the Canadian ThoracicSociety (CTS) was held on Sunday, October 24, 2004, inSeattle, Washington, in conjunction with the AmericanCollege of Chest Physicians’ (ACCP) annual CHEST confer-ence (October 23 to 28, 2004). The program highlighted theexcellence and leadership of Canadians in respiratory medi-cine. The day was sold out, and the feedback regarding the pro-gram content, quality of speakers and their presentations, andthe overall educational experience of the day was extremelypositive. Such a positive response could not have beenachieved without excellent speakers or the significant supportof our funding partners. We would also like to thank the ACCPfor their ongoing support in helping us make this fourth year ofour collaboration an even greater success than previous years.Watch future issues of the Canadian Respiratory Journal forpublication of the proceedings.
The CTS’ Annual Christie Memorial Banquet was heldSaturday, October 23, 2004, and the lecture was held onMonday, October 25, 2004. Attendance for both events wasfantastic. The 2004 Christie Memorial Lecturer was Dr MagdyYounes. To the audience’s delight, Dr John Remmers ‘intro-duced’ Dr Younes to the membership and their guests at theAnnual Christie Memorial Banquet. The Christie MemorialLecture honours the memory of one of the major leaders in res-piratory research and education in Canada. The lecturer is cho-sen on the basis of their major contributions to thedevelopment of research, education or clinical excellence inthe field of Canadian respiratory medicine.
Dr Younes is Professor of Medicine at the University ofToronto in Toronto, Ontario. He is also a Senior Scholar at theUniversity of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he pre-viously taught in the Departments of Medicine andRespirology as Distinguished Professor and Head, respectively. He has a lifelong interest in the areas of respirology, physiologyand pathogenesis of respiratory disease, including topics such asthe reflux control of breathing; the control of breathing duringexercise, sleep and mechanical ventilation; and the pathogen-esis of respiratory failure and obstructive sleep apnea.Dr Younes has mentored 47 research trainees, many of whomare now physicians teaching medicine throughout the world.
