CTWR 431: 21ST CENTURY VILLAINS & HEROES Writing Modern Narratives of War & Justice for the Screen Saving Private Ryan. Apocalypse Now. Judas and the Black Messiah. Munich. Black Panther. Award winning films that resonate with audiences and tell stories of war, crime, and justice. Yet, in the 21 st century, the new conflicts are not fought between states; they are civil wars, terrorism, intelligence operations, and the War on Terror. And different communities have different perceptions of who are the villains and who are the heroes. Through a combination of lectures, screenings, acclaimed guests, and lively debate we’ll analyze stories about the struggle for justice, war, and crimes against ethnic and religious groups - at the international and domestic level. Along the way we’ll ask about the role today’s screenwriter plays in bringing to life stories that influence modern policy, define our histories, and articulate global narratives that have the power to shape the future. Potential Screenings: : Apocalypse Now, Avatar, The Battle of Algiers, Black Panther, Captain America: Civil War, Citizen Four, Darfur Now, Fauda, The Godfather, Homeland, Judas and the Black Messiah, Judgement at Nuremberg, Kony 2012, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, 24, Wikileaks: We Steal Secrets, Wonder Woman. Your Instructors: Luis Moreno-Ocampo who, as the founding Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at The Hague, was involved in all the 21 st Century crises, including Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel / Palestine, Colombia, and Venezuela; and Professor Ted Braun, writer-director of the critically acclaimed documentary Darfur Now, whose films have engaged and articulated international conflict in the 21 st Century. #19350R • Wednesdays • 7-10pm
