CUBA• Christopher Columbus, on his first Spanish-

sponsored voyage to the Americas in 1492,

sailed south from what is now the Bahamas to

explore the northeast coast of Cuba and the

northern coast of Hispaniola.

• Columbus, who was searching for a route to

India, believed the island to be a peninsula of the

Asian mainland.National Revolution Day - On July 26, 1953, Fidel Castro

stormed the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba.

These barracks were the main garrison for Batista’s army.

The attack was not a success, and Batista’s army quickly

overpowered Castro’s band of approximately 150 rebels. Friday 3rd July 2020

Where is Cuba?

• Cuba is located in the northern Caribbean where the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean

meet.

• It is east of the Yucatán Peninsula (Mexico), south of both the U.S. state of Florida and the Bahamas,

west of Haiti and north of both Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.

• It is 4,392 miles away, & takes between 9-10 hours to get there!

Cuban dancing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Sj-ePJNlGg

• These Cuban dances are linked to the history of

Cuba from the seventeenth century, a kind of mestizo

dances arrived in Spain, joyful and with movements

not adapted to the modesty of the time.

• Around 1776, a dance called "chuchumbé", with

mischievous and malicious touches that spread

rapidly, would come from Cuban culture.

• Since the 1920s (1920s) and especially since 1960,

Cuban salsa and timba dancing in Cuba has been a

sign of identity, and these Cuban rhythms and

dances have become increasingly popular

internationally, thanks to important names such as

Desi Arnaz, Marcelino Guerra, Fajardo, Xavier

Cugat, Mario Bauza, José Curbelo, Chano Pozo, and

many others.TASK: Click the link above & learn how

Cuban food• Cuban cuisine is simple but robust. One of its most popular home-cooking styles is

called criollo in deference to its Spanish origins. The main ingredients in criollo are

chicken, beef, pork, eggs, beans, rice and vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce,

cucumbers, cassava (yucca) and plantain (a starchy fruit similar to a banana).

• This is peasant food at its best when spiced with the king and queen of Cuban

seasonings: ajo(garlic) and onion.

• Criollo has a European influenced offshoot, too, thanks to the contributions made

by international travelers visiting Havana, Cuba's capital. They collectively helped

to develop Cuban-fusion cuisine back when blending food cultures was just called

creative experimentation.

• Western criollo adds a few ingredients like flour, raisins, capers and olives, and

uses them in new or expanded ways. There are also Asian influences in sweet and

sour and rice dishes. In the 1800s, Cuba had a small influx of Chinese labourers

whose descendants make up about one percent of the population

Cuban cars!• American cars were imported into Cuba for about 50

years beginning near the early 20th century.

• After the Cuban Revolution, the U.S. embargo was

erected and Castro banned the importation of American

cars and mechanical parts.

• That’s why Cuba is the way it is today—essentially a

living museum for classic cars. The old American autos

are often kept running with parts and pieces that were

never intended for them.

• It’s not uncommon to find a beautiful 1950s Chevy with

a Russian engine—something that would be

considered sacrilege to serious car collectors.

Cuban history

• Cuba was liberated from Spanish rule in the

Spanish-American War, just before the beginning

of the 20th century.

• The United States dominated the Cuban

administration for about a decade, but Cuba has

been considered an independent country

throughout the century.

Miguel Díaz-Canel

• Miguel Díaz-Canel became President of the

Council of State on 19 April 2018, taking over

from Raúl Castro, and has been President of

the Republic since 10 October 2019.

• The position of first secretary of the

Communist Party of Cuba continues to be

the most powerful political position in Cuba.

Cuban missile crisis• During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the

Soviet Union engaged in a tense, 13-day political and military

standoff in October 1962 over the installation of nuclear-armed

Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. shores.

• In a TV address on October 22, 1962, President John F.

Kennedy (1917-63) notified Americans about the presence of

the missiles, explained his decision to enact a naval blockade

around Cuba and made it clear the U.S. was prepared to use

military force if necessary to neutralize this perceived threat to

national security.

• Following this news, many people feared the world was on the

brink of nuclear war. However, disaster was avoided when the

U.S. agreed to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s (1894-1971)

offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S.

promising not to invade Cuba. Kennedy also secretly agreed to

remove U.S. missiles from Turkey.

Fidel Castro• After seizing power in the Caribbean island nation of Cuba in 1959,

leftist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro (1926-2016) aligned himself with the Soviet Union. Under Castro, Cuba grew dependent on the Soviets for military and economic aid. During this time, the U.S. and the Soviets (and their respective allies) were engaged in the Cold War (1945-91), an ongoing series of largely political and economic clashes.

• Cuban leader Fidel Castro (1926-2016) established the

first communist state in the Western Hemisphere after

leading an overthrow of the military dictatorship of Fulgencio

Batista in 1959.

• He ruled over Cuba for nearly five decades, until handing off

power to his younger brother Raúl in 2008.

Che Guevara • On October 9, 1967, socialist revolutionary and

guerilla leader Che Guevara, age 39, is killed by the Bolivian army. The U.S.-military-backed

• Bolivian forces captured Guevara on October 8 while battling his band of guerillas in Bolivia and executed him the following day.

• His hands were cut off as proof of death and his body was buried in an unmarked grave.

• In 1997, Guevara’s remains were found and sent back to Cuba, where they were reburied in a ceremony attended by President Fidel Castro and thousands of Cubans.

Che Guevara • Ernesto Rafael Guevara de la Serna was born to a well-off family

in Argentina in 1928. While studying medicine at the University of Buenos Aires, he took time off to travel around South America on a motorcycle; during this time, he witnessed the poverty and oppression of the lower classes.

• He received a medical degree in 1953 and continued his travels around Latin America, becoming involved with left-wing organizations.

• In the mid 1950s, Guevara met up with Fidel Castro and his group of exiled revolutionaries in Mexico.

• Guevara played a key role in Castro’s seizure of power from Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959 and later served as Castro’s right-hand man and minister of industry.

• Guevara strongly opposed U.S. domination in Latin America and advocated peasant-based revolutions to combat social injustice in Third World countries.

• Castro later described him as “an artist of revolutionary warfare.”

Cost of living• Cubans get free food allowances and are allowed to purchase

additional rations of staple foods at cost price from government run bodegas and depots.

• Cuban utility bills are all highly subsidized. The monthly phone, electricity, and gas bill is only about £1.60, which is basically nothing when compared to western bills.

• All medical coverage is provided free by the government.• Gasoline is sold as subsidized costs.• Education is completely free, even for older people wanting to return

to school just for a few classes.• Beer, alcohol, food is all sold by the state at cost or near cost.• Rental rates for properties are controlled and most Cubans own their

own homes.• Property taxes and goods and service taxes are zero.

Do you know what the average is for the UK?

Cost of livingIt has been stated many times from international government sources and from NGO’s worldwide that the average Cuban salary equates to only about £16 per month.

Based on a worker working 9 hours per day, 5 days per week and 4 weeks per month,

What would the average hourly salary be?From this work out what the average salary month would be.

How does that compare to the UK?

Weather• The summer in Cuba is from June to August. These are the hottest

months and some people (including the Cubans!) find the heat quite intense.

• Temperatures rise to 38 Celsius on the eastern side of the island, which when coupled with high humidity, can be quite unpleasant.

• On the other hand, summer can be a very interesting time to visit Cuba as is one of the most festive times of the year with carnival being held in many cities, and festivals on throughout the island.

• This is also holiday time for the Cubans so there are many social occasions.

Page 19: CUBA · 2020. 7. 3. · Fidel Castro • After seizing power in the Caribbean island nation of Cuba in 1959, leftist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro (1926-2016) aligned himself

Weather• The hurricane season is from July to November with September and

October being the months with the highest probability of cyclone activity.

• September and October are the low season for travel to Cuba. There are fewer visitors to Cuba during these months than at any other time of year.

• There is on average more rain in these months due to this tropical storm activity.

• When hurricanes occur they generally aren't a risk to life, however they can cause some interruption to travel plans. Cuba's safety record concerning hurricanes is excellent and it is unusual that in even the biggest storms that there is a loss of life.

• This is in stark contrast to other countries in the region (such as Haiti but also including the US). Cuba is very well organised, disciplined and prepared for such events and there are excellent evacuation procedures. Tourists are given the highest priority.

Hurricanes • Hurricanes form over the warm ocean water of the tropics. When

warm moist air over the water rises, it is replaced by cooler air. • The cooler air will then warm and start to rise. This cycle causes

huge storm clouds to form. • These storm clouds will begin to rotate with the spin of the Earth

forming an organized system. • If there is enough warm water, the cycle will continue and the

storm clouds and wind speeds will grow causing a hurricane to form.

• Task: Using the image to the right draw out a hurricane & using the next slide annotate the different parts of what makes up a hurricane. Remember they form on sea not land, that would be a tornado.

Page 21: CUBA · 2020. 7. 3. · Fidel Castro • After seizing power in the Caribbean island nation of Cuba in 1959, leftist revolutionary leader Fidel Castro (1926-2016) aligned himself

Hurricanes Eye - At the centre of the hurricane is the eye. The eye is an area of very low air pressure. There are generally no clouds in the eye and the wind is calm. Don't let this fool you, however, the most dangerous part of the storm is at the edge of the eye called the eye wall.Eye wall - Around the outside of the eye is a wall made up of very heavy clouds. This is the most dangerous part of the hurricane and where the highest speed winds are. The winds at the eye wall can reach speeds of 155 miles per hour.Rain bands - Hurricanes have large spirally bands of rain called rain bands. These bands can drop huge amounts of rainfall causing flooding when the hurricane hits land.Diameter - Hurricanes can become huge storms. The diameter of the hurricane is measured from one side to the other. Hurricanes can span a diameter of over 600 miles.Height - The storm clouds that power hurricanes can become very tall. A powerful hurricane can reach nine miles into the atmosphere.
