Fidel Castro is the longest ruling head of state inthe world next to Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain..



Named As Fidel AlejandroCastro Ruz.

Born in 1926 in Birán, Cuba.Wealthy family owning sugar

plantations.Mother was his father shousehold servant, while fatherwas married to another

woman.Ridiculed by peers for being

an illegitimate child.Raised in various foster

homes.



Finished high schools at Belen, in Havana in 1945.

Educated by Jesuit Priest who were conservativeand disciplined.

Involved heavily in student revolutionary groupswhich held protests and rallies.

Studied Law at university of Havana.



Castro was shocked by lack of social justice, highcorruption and dependency of Cuban peopletowards US.

Joined the Partido Ortodoxo, againstgovernment corruption.

Castro was an active member of the party until

the 1952.Was a candidate for a seat in the Cuban

parliament until the takeover by Fulgencio Batista.



Fulgencia Batista took power in 1952.

Accepted poorly by the Cuban people.

Led revolt against Batista starting in 1953.

Used guerrilla warfare tactics.

Imprisoned by Batista.

Released two years later.

Castro along with Che Guevara capturedthe capitol in 1958.



Signed into law the First Agrarian Reform, limitinglandholding and forbidding foreign land ownership.

Favored the poor over the wealthy.

Strengthened Social Services & Promoted PublicEducation.

Turned Cuba into a socialist state & N ationalizedindustry and property



Supporters of Batista were executed.Freedom of speech was suppressed.

In 1959 both the Agrarian Reform Law and theUrban Reform Law were passed.

Relationship with US turned sour
