n-Cuba becomes a one-party (Communist) state

-Govt. took control of economy & media (Industry, TV, Radio, Business, Newspapers)

-Political Opponents of Castro & the Communist Party were persecuted, arrested, or worse.

-Cuba’s main ally was now the Soviet Union & it’s relationship w/ the US went sour

-Many people fled Cuba to escape the new Castro way of life

-The US did not want a Communist country 90mi. away; the US cut off relations w/ Cuba & established a trade embargo (Still in place)

-The Soviet Union provided Cuba w/ food & weapons & the US felt threatened by this

-The height of tension was the “Cuban Missile Crisis” in 1962, when Soviet missiles were placed in Cuba

-When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Cuba’s economy was badly hurt b/c it was their main trading partner. Cuba’s economy remains

weak today
