HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

Started my career with Eskom, then Telkom, then the UK was up and then Antarctica. I have recently also run a mobile events and IT Company called “Xtreme Effect”, supplying sound engineering services, sound reinforcement & lighting, IT solutions and retail items. Now currently again, I am contracting as a communications engineer with the 72

nd relief expedition on Sub-Antarctic Marion Island, for the department of environmental affairs. Through the

vastness of my career and in my quest for development, pretty much since after school, I could never really anticipate how much one’s personal life revolves around your career aspirations and work culture. Seems as if the first thing I ponder on, experience or do every morning, is tailored around a specific chain of thought that originate either from a field of study, things at work, experiences around current technologies, or a world of wonder in mobile devices. Now to be precise on what matters in one’s personal life, obviously, not all work and no play but, I don’t think it is possible to shake the habit. My hobbies ultimately revolve around technology, audio, the personal computer and off-course, the very world at our fingertips. All the different experiences surrounding technologies of this nature, an endless source of information and wonder Audio:

The physical repair or assembly of power-amplification modules really does “amplify” the end-result, certain pre-amplification techniques and filtering stages, design & technologies surrounding them and the reproduction and/or superimposing of an audio signal. What is perceived to be audible and how the human ear responds? The experience when everything sounds perfect and in the event of hosting a concert or performance, when the atmosphere carries even the light hearted to triumphantly shout of enjoyment, when the “audible” frequencies are re-produced perfectly and you experience the true abilities of a musician or loud speaker, in the essence of their design. IT: When you teach a computing technology or development and you experience the effect it has, when somebody finally grasps problems around misconceptions of the PC or network infrastructure. To understand at last, why you bought the stupid thing in the first place, why you have been struggling with some feature just because you did not understand what the processes really entail. When one experience the processing or conquer the age-old recourse problem on your server farm, the network infrastructure or your personal computer, after that upgrade or repair that you were waiting so anxiously for. RF Technologies: Unbelievable, I say, looking at 3

rd and 4

th generation cellular technologies, IP header compression technologies,

encryption, VPN, Wi-Fi, satellite links, radio, audio, superimposing signals, modulation techniques. Difficult to even comprehend where this all started but certainly, worse to imagine a modern day world without radio frequencies Personal computing and sound equipment has always been a passion to me, and the addition of sounds and sound effects to a visual medium, really highlighted the core of visual stimuli and audio enhancement effects. It absolutely qualifies as the ultimate reward enhancer, when along with the usage of Mpeg Layer 3/4 & WMA players, virtual studio software programs and state of the art digital sound reproduction modules, lurks the inevitably necessary mix between analogue and digital and a phenomenal contribution, to what you see and what you experience with your other senses. Further developments in the merging markets of digital sounds and “FX” effects versus analogue enhancement technologies in return, allowed for ever evolving electronics, speaker and accompanying cabinet designs and true real-time responses on amplification, frequency management and protection. I do believe that an enormous part of entertainment fortunately consists of just this merging factor between digital and analogue technologies, between what you see, what you hear and your “moment of truth” around what you experience at that time. Interactive PC usage for multimedia applications, virtualization, desktop publishing, internet browsing and cloud storage mechanisms is what I believe, what’s driving the culture to create and innovate and it is this very structure, that has been determining the science of the personal computer and the networked environments as we know it today. Packet switched and circuit switched networks, now there is a concept for you, imagine a world without this and you would find yourself in the essence of why technology was driven this way. Businesses revolve around the transfer of money, the security and integrity of data frames and throughput, adverse concepts of mobility and VPN but let’s not get carried away? It is really about a passion for development and ultimately, communication and time. All this is “I” and then last but never least, on the category of relaxation, the following comes to mind;

Computing, visual stimuli, music and quality sound Playing tennis and other sports occasionally, biking and hiking Living Life and respecting my surroundings, travelling, the magic around the other road Being sociable off-course and making the most of what I have
