The Spanish approach to diabetes care.
• Different approaches in different regions.
• Type 1 treated by endocrinologists in outpatient clinics in
hospitals.
• Type 2 treated by GP in about 90 % of the cases.
• DE has been incorporated into the Health care system but
in a superficial way.
• Some doctors are reluctant to accept patient autonomy.
• Nurses don’t have official certificates as DE.
• Paternalisitc attitudes are even more frequent than those
aimed at shared decision making.
