l Planning involves those processes that that transform broad educational purposes into specific procedures for realizing those purposes

Three Types of Planning

l  Long range planning-reviewing material for the coming academic year

l Unit planning-components of a long range plan

l Daily planning-content and activities for a daily lesson

l  Long range planning l The planning that is done prior to the

beginning of the academic year l  Includes an outline of the content to be

covered along with ideas on instruction

l Unit planning l The planning of content that covers a

period of time and serves to connect school subjects together

l Daily planning l The planning that is done prior to the

commencement of a lesson or unit l  Identification of the sequence of activities

l A linear model involving four questions l What educational purposes should the

school seek to serve? l What educational experiences can be

provided that are likely to attain these purposes

l How can these educational experiences be effectively organized

l How can we determine whether these purposes are being attained

l Are these steps or something else? l  Is there an order to these procedures?

Walker’s Deliberative Model

l Platform-conception, theories, aims, images, procedures

l Deliberation-needed facts, generate alternatives, consider consequences, weigh alternatives, chose most desirable alternatives

l Design-the set of relationships embodied in the materials in use

Freire’s Model

l Development of generative themes-educators and ordinary citizens develop themes based on the reality of their day-to-day lives

l Evaluative meetings-educators and community volunteers interpret these themes to determine what they tell us about the lives of ordinary citizens

l Thematic investigation circles-explore themes more widely with the community and develop those that will be the source of the curriculum

l Culture circles-a forum for discussion
