Forensic Entomology 1992 -

5.1 RESEARCH SPECIALIZATION & ACHIEVEMENTS Medical, Veterinary and Forensic Entomology are the main fields of research. Forensic Entomology is the aspect that receives the most attention currently. I consider myself as the “father of Forensic Entomology” in South Africa, as I have officially started this research field in 1993 and The Forensic Entomology Investigation Team of the University of the Free State (FEITUOFS) was established. Later, in 1998, Dr. M.W. Mansell from the National Insect Collection, ARC – Plant Protection Institute joined as collaborator, doing forensic entomology investigations in Gauteng. Currently we are the only two forensic entomologists in South Africa and Africa. Amongst the achievements are the 250+ case studies that were done to date in collaboration with the South African Police Services, State Pathologists and Health Departments and private companies and individuals. One of the highlights was the first supreme court case, of a serial killer, in which my testimony as expert witness was required. Later more court cases followed. A further highlight was the invitation to get involved in a Forensic Science training course for nurses. This course is under the auspices of the American government and the lectures in the different disciplines are presented mainly by American scientists. In 2002 I was invited to form part of a similar training program for nurses in the Free State. The latter course is under the auspices of the Department of Health of the Free State Government and the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of the Free State.
