L. SUMMARY OF MY ACTIVITIES AND FUTURE PLANS
The areas of social inequality at the individual level and in the labor market were the basis for
publications in the former years. The social inequality area combined with the newly emerging (at
the time) area of organization theory led me later on to the study of nonprofit organizations and
philanthropy. This has been a significant change in my area of research (from turnover studies) to
the civil society area where there was little known then. The significant opportunity to examine
issues of social inequality at the macro level by investigating issues of performance has
particularly influenced my knowledge on human services. Understanding the phenomenon of
human services necessitated an interdisciplinary approach adopting and combining concepts from
economic sociology, organizations and social inequality. The diverse curriculum of the teaching
courses in the department of human services has provided the basis for many subsequent courses
inside and outside the university and the transpired in the publication of two books.
The interdisciplinary approach has served best the teaching in the department. First, I developed
and introduced the elements of the Human Services Discipline presented at the evaluation visit of
the Higher Education Committee Council (2006-2007) that formed the basis for our
undergraduate program and (at that time) development of the graduate program. Second, due to
my involvement in this area it has been possible to introduce the first successful Practicum
program in the department that gained more support form students in the following years (from 12
students to 30 students per year). Ιn the 5 years 2006-2011 that I served as the chair of the
department of Human Services I was able to advance the delayed/rejected proposal for the
inauguration of a Master’s program in the department (it is now running its fourth year with an
average of 35 graduate students per year). I have also served as a mentor to four graduate students.
My activity as a chair of the social inequality committee in the “Haifa-Boston” nonprofit group
has contributed to the advancement of the department’s Practicum and graduate studies
significantly. I therefore continue my work in three distinct directions:
First, I continue with this area of studies into the direction of Philanthropy and nonprofit
organizations in Israel. I intend to promote and further develop the concept and measurement of
performance ("Performance mix") that enables to evaluate the economic and social impact of
nonprofits. In that I follow through my previous work on Philanthropy performance recently
22
published in the leading journal VOLUNTAS and I seek to introduce and establish an
interdisciplinary approach in the analysis of civil society link between nonprofit theories
organizational theories and philanthropy studies. Part of the agenda will focus on the area of
donations following the recent publication which has will be also advanced with a focus on
developing an interdisciplinary theoretical in the area of civil society, philanthropy and nonprofit
organization. Addressing social issues using a critical organizational approach contributes highly
to matters of social inequality and increases the potential to understand the causes of economic
deprivation and thereof propose a wider framework to address these highly relevant issues in
today’s western societies. My expertise in this area along with a recently extensively cited
publication in (# 34 Publication list) linking social media to online donations as well as a very
well accepted research report on Lobbing practices among nonprofits in Israel, I have invited to
join Carter Center of Leadership at the University of San-Diego.
Second, I will expand my research agenda in the subject of health will gain further support with
the funding recently received from ISF for the next 2-3 years will extend my research in health.
Following three recently published manuscripts in Health Expectations, Computers in Human
Behavior and Social Science and Medicine, I will continue to publish on the link between
computers, social media and health with doctoral and graduate students. I am also interested to
farther advance this area towards future collaborations with EU colleagues following the meetings
in the framework of the Health Innovation Day sponsored by the Netherlands Embassy and
Ministry of Technology and Science (Amsterdam, June 2014).
I am also currently involved in the preparation of two manuscripts in the areas of (a) social media
and health changes (b) use of nonprofit settings for health purposes and (c) use of mobile phones
for health purposes in collaboration with graduate students. In these studies the focus is in the area
of marketing and lobbying of health nonprofit settings. This aspect will expand the area of
research related to the link between “supply” side of health that balances the “demand” side of
health services that I have introduced and developed in the recent studies.
