1988-1992 Involved with data collection and analysis re: evaluative studies

of the Pressure Sore Prediction Score (PSPS) with the original

author – Peter Lowthian

1992 Undertook enquiry as published - 'Spells, potions and rituals'

1993 - Current Involved with ongoing multi-centre national research and

randomised clinical trials of both pressure reducing and pressure

- relieving support surfaces, in addition to wound management

materials, as clinical/principal investigator plus clinical

evaluations of the same for both primary investigative and

comparative purposes


Research Profile (continued):

2000 Involved in the interviewing/data collection process for the first

Lymphoedema ‘epidemiological’ study undertaken within the

United Kingdom. (Population drawn from one major NHS

Healthcare trust – Wandsworth, South London, including St.

George’s Hospital)

2001 Invited to be a principal investigator for a multi-centre

randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of VAC

therapy (KCI) for the treatment and management of Pressure

Ulcers. Note: Co-ordinator of the only British centre involved -

other centres in the United States of America and Europe

2003 Invited to be a principal investigator for a European multi-centre

randomised controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of Enamel

Matrix Derivative (EMD) for the treatment and management of

Leg Ulcers. One of only four centres in the UK.

2005 Invited to be a principal investigator for a multi national/centre

clinical trail of a newly developed compression therapy system

prior to launch. One of only five centres in the United Kingdom.

2005 Commenced my PhD studies at Thames Valley University

(London) ‘A prospective, stratified, cohort study to investigate

if the calculation of a patients Ankle Brachial Pressure Index

(ABPI) as part of an assessment tool can be used to predict

patients ‘at risk’ of developing heel pressure ulcers’

2006 Invited to be an investigator for a multi-centre randomised

controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a new TNP therapy and

fluid delivery system (Smith and Nephew) for the treatment and

management of a number of surgical wound types.

2007 Registered and commenced PhD study, ‘The development of a

tool incorporating hand held Doppler assessment to assess a

patient’s risk of Heel Pressure Ulcer Development’. Interrupted

by wife’s severe illness (3 years) and then successive Chief

Nurses not allowing time/access to patients for data collection.

presentation and or poster presentation at an appropriate national / international conference, trust

report and / or as manufacturers data (educational) and is therefore easily accessible.

Ongoing Regularly invited to give lectures/run workshops at study days /

conferences throughout the United Kingdom and Europe

encompassing a variety of aspects of Tissue Viability

(theoretical and practical). Whenever possible, attend all the

major Tissue Viability conferences as a delegate if not already

involved as a speaker e.g.: European Wound Management

1994 Initiated and organised the first "Current Concepts - Latest

Thinking" Tissue Viability conference in Cambridgeshire -

1995 Instrumental in the development of a Tissue Viability course,

expanding upon a module that had already been planned re: the

Management of Patients with Leg Ulcers (ENB N18). Outcome

– an educational course comprising of a core module plus three

other modules entitled 'Aspects of Tissue Viability', widening

the focus to include patients with Acute (ENB A49a) and

Chronic (ENB A49c) Wounds, organised in conjunction with the

2011 Invited to participate in an International meeting in Lucerne on

the Clinical Use of Wound Cleansing Solutions (4th-6th October).

2012 Attended the EWMA Conference in Vienna as a council member

2012 Attended the Italian Association of Ulcer Care (AIUC) meeting

in Rimini as speaker on ‘The management of Complex Wounds’

2014 Invited to Sarangpur India to give professional advice to the

World wide Spiritual Leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha

re: Skin Care - Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Management.

2014 Attended and presented at the EWMA Conference in Madrid as

a council member – chaired scientific free paper and e-poster

sessions. Presented on 10 years’ experience with PUNT (oral)

and two posters re: the introduction and outcomes achieved with

Standard Operating Procedures re: Pressure Ulcer Prevention

(Aderma Heel Protection Pads) and Wound Infection Control

(Prontosan). Re-elected to the EWMA Council for a further three

years.

2015 Attended and presented at the EWMA Conference in London as

a council member – involved in two focus groups re: new

product innovations. Presented papers on Modern Wound

Management Materials and Setting up and facilitating a weekly

Complex Wound Clinic within ULHT.



2016 Invited to return to Sarangpur India to give further professional

advice to the World wide Spiritual Leader of BAPS

Swaminarayan Sanstha re: Skin Care - Pressure Ulcer Prevention

and Management.

2016 Attended and presented at the EWMA Conference in Bremen as

a council member – chaired scientific free papers and judged e-

posters. Presented to all of the EWMA Co-operating

Organisations on the new EWMA Leg Ulcer Document that was

launched during the Conference and for which I was a co- author.

2016 Invited to present a paper entitled ‘Pressure Ulcer Prevention: a

UK perspective’ at the Croatian Wound Association (CWC)

Annual Conference on behalf of and supported by EWMA (20th

and 21st October) Zagreb.

2017 Attended the EWMA Conference in as a council member –

chaired scientific free paper sessions. Asked as second three year

term on council came to an end to continue to on the Patient

Outcome Group and Patient Liaison Groups.

2017 Invited to speak at an Infection Prevention Seminar in China

(supported by BBraun)

2018 Invited to participate in an International Pressure Ulcer Injury

and Prevention Panel to develop a subject specific Educational

Video by Smith and Nephew (UK).

2018 Invited to attend and present two papers (Prevention Strategies

for Leg Ulcers & SSI Dressings and Patient Involvement) at the

EWMA Conference, Krakow (May) and facilitated a workshop

entitled, ‘Patient repositioning and the properties of the support

surfaces used’. Also invited to chair free paper sessions re:

Pressure Ulcers - Prevention and Management.

2018 Invited to Latin America to present at two national study days –

August 22nd and 24th – Columbia & Mexico respectively.

Presented four papers at each event. Attendance supported by

Smith and Nephew International.

2018 Invited to Japan to present at a Lunchtime Seminar during the

20th Pressure Ulcer Congress (28th/29th September, Okinawa) on

‘Taking Wound Cleansing Seriously’. Attendance supported by

BBraun International.



2018 Invited to Honk Kong by a UK based group Advanced Nurse

Education, to facilitate a week of Tissue Viability related

workshops/teaching (8th to 12th October) – various subjects.

2018 Invited to Verona to give Professional Advice to Corr Med

(Ireland) and Service Med (Italy) re: Pressure Redistributing

Equipment (October 29th to November 1st).

2019 Invited to attend and participate in an International Wound Care

Focus Group meeting as an Independent Advisor in Sempach,

Switzerland (19th to 21st March). Attendance supported by

BBraun International.

2019 Invited to present at the 10th Ukraine International Nursing

Congress, Lviv (10th/11th May) on the subject of

‘Preventing/Minimising the Risk of Surgical Site Infection

(SSI).

2019 Invited to attend an Advisory Panel Meeting in Gothenburg

(3rd/4th June) re Advances in Negative Pressure Wound Therapy

(pre EWMA). Attendance supported by Acelity.

2019 Invited to attend and present at the EWMA Conference in

Gothenburg - Facilitate a workshop entitled, ‘Patient

repositioning and the properties of the support surfaces used’ and
