Every North Carolina high school student must:

o Meet the course and credit requirements based on when they entered high school as a ninth grader for the first time

o Earn passing scores on three essential End-Of-Course exams: Math I, Biology and English II

o Meet any local graduation requirements

The total number of units for which a student could

register is referred to as the student’s Maximum

Potential. The total number of units required for

graduation is equal to the student’s maximum potential

minus four. On the block schedule, a student can take

eight units per year, or a total of 32 units in four years.

The maximum potential of 32 units minus four units

equals a graduation requirement of

28 units.

Academic Difficulty of Courses•College Prep (CP) – Course content, pace, and academic rigor follows standards specified by the NCSCOS with content enrichment where appropriate.

•Honors - Course content, pace, and academic rigor place high expectations on the student and surpass standards specified by the NCSCOS. These courses demand greater independence and responsibility than Level 3 courses. This level or higher is suggested for competitive college admission.

•Advanced Placement– Course content,pace, and academic rigor are college-level asadopted by the College Board and prepare studentsto take the AP examinations which may lead tocollege credit.

Pass/Fail Courses

Students will be permitted to enroll in one (1) elective course perschool year on a Pass-Fail basis. The course may be in addition tocourses that use only a Pass-Fail grading system. However, thestudent must decide within the first two weeks if the course is to betaken on a pass-fail basis. NC Scholars may not take a requiredcourse on pass/fail status.

NC Academic Scholars is a recognition that you may receive upon graduation.

• Students must have an overall four year un-weighted GPA of 3.5 and complete certain courses to qualify. Please see your program of studies to access the NCAS requirements for your class.

•You will be selecting your courses on the registration card AND in Power School

•You will select 8 courses as your 1st choices.

•You will select 4 alternate courses. These will serve as back-up courses if your first choices are not available.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT ALTERNATES•Your alternate selections are just as important as your first choices.

•Please make sure you select courses that you want to take as these courses may appear on your schedule

•Students who receive the courses for which they register, including selected alternates, will not meet the criteria to request a schedule change.

Increasing Course Rigor?

•Are you considering increasing your course rigor from CP to Honors or Honors to AP?

•You are approved for this change if you earned a 90 or above in your previous level of course.

•If you do not meet the 90 or above guideline, then you and a parent must complete a course waiver.

REMEMBER: Choosing more rigorous courses does not automatically increase GPA ; select rigorous courses that you can do well in.

World Language

•World Language is not requirement for graduation, however to meet the minimum requirements for any UNC system school, you must have a minimum of 2 levels of the same world language.

•Taking more levels of a world language definitely adds rigor to your transcript. It is recommended that you go as far as you can in a language as long as you can maintain good grades in these courses.

• Academies are available to all rising juniors and seniors who are on target to graduate on time. Selection into an academy is application-based. Student may have to travel to another high school for the academy of his/her choice.

•Complete the online application and select UCPS Academy of interest

•You will be emailed a PDF file of your application for you to print and have your parent sign.

Marketing CO-OP PROGRAM

• Marketing Co-op is a CTE program where students working in a marketing-related job can take this course in conjunction with a CTE Marketing course.

• To participate in the program you must be in 11th or 12th grade and complete an application.

• You must take a marketing class with the co-op marketing class during the same semester.

• These two courses are linked together. You must pass co-op to pass your marketing class and vice versa

CAREER AND COLLEGE PROMISE

• CCP is a partnership with SPCC

• This dual enrollment allows you to get college credit for free through SPCC

• There are two Pathways• College Transfer Pathway • CTE Pathway

• Juniors and Seniors are eligible to take 1-3 courses.

• CCP classes count as elective credits; some at the honors level.

• Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and meet minimum test requirements (PLAN, PSAT, SAT, or ACT scores)

• Students should apply, and request their transcript to be sent, on CFNC.org.

Registering for AP Courses• If you register for an AP course, please check the following list to

ensure that you have also registered for the honors companion course.

• It is the expectation of UCPS that students taking AP courses will take the AP Exam.

• The following courses have an honors companion course, making these AP courses yearlong courses. Please register for BOTH the honors companion course AND the AP course.

• The remainder of the AP courses are single semester courses.

NCVPS / UCV Courses

• NCVPS and UCV courses are all online.

• There is an application.

• Students will not be placed in an online course if there is availability in the same course at CHS.

• If a course is offered in UCV, we will use that format rather than NCVPS.

• NCVPS courses are used when our school/county does not have a course that you want to take.

• Applications are available on the school counseling website

Peer Tutors

Please do not register to be a peer tutor. If you want to be a peer tutor, please wait to make this request during the schedule change process (the first 5 days of the Fall semester)

“Doubling Up”

• Students may consider “doubling up” on certain courses (e.g. Math III Honors and Pre-Calculus in the junior year to be able to take AP Calculus during the senior year.)

• Doubling up should only be used to be able to take more advanced levels within a particular subject

• If you would like to double up on a core class, please list the second course as one of your alternates.

• Only if space is available in courses will doubling up be considered.

• Please note: Math teachers recommend that if a student wants to double up in math, then the only time to do so is during the year you take Math III Honors and Pre-Calculus.

EARLY GRADUATION

•UCPS offers mid-year and full-year early graduation.

•You must complete an early graduation application by the first five days of the fall semester if you want to graduate at the end of this year. If you want to be a mid-year grad, applications will be due the beginning of your senior year.

•Only for students entering the workforce or attending community college. Four year universities do not encourage early graduation.

•Early graduation applications are on the School Counseling Website.
