FROM THE FILM COMMISSIONER

DC Shorts is a very unique festival that showcases the best in short films and we commend the DC Film Alliance for hosting this vital event to the local film and television industry. Our hope is that you leave here just as amazed as we are with the incredible talent pool that exists here in the nation’s capital.

If you are a filmmaker, let us remind you of the opportunity to choose the District of Columbia for your next project. From world-class directors, animators and commercial producers to professional support services, state-of-the-art facilities and a diverse range of locations, our city can provide you with everything you need for a top-notch production.

We hope you get a chance to experience the wonderful scenery and enjoy a unique “Washington” experience in the nation’s capital.

Thank you for coming and enjoy the festival.

Sincerely,

Crystal PalmerDirector, DC Office of Motion Picture & Television Development

FROM THE MAYOR’S OFFICE

Welcome to the District of Columbia and to one of the District’s most entertaining events, the DC Shorts Film Festival. I would like to congratulate DC Shorts and the DC Film Alliance for their dedication to developing the arts by pursuing excellence in filmmaking and supporting filmmakers both locally and internationally.

DC Shorts, along with the the DC Film Alliance and the DC Office of Motion Picture and Television, are working hard to make the District a vibrant filmmaking community. DC Shorts’ ability to bring together people of such varying backgrounds — residents, students, visitors and filmmakers, makes this a truly exciting event. The uniqueness of the nation’s capital makes this city a most appropriate venue for the festival.

I hope each of you take time to discover what makes our city so special: its monuments, historic landmarks, restaurants, shops, parks, and, most importantly, its people. Also, I would like to thank the many volunteers and sponsors who help to create this wonderful festival. Without their dedication and hard work, DC Shorts would not be possible. Enjoy the films and thank you for visiting the District!

Sincerely,

Vincent C. GrayMayor, District of Columbia

KEEPING IT REEL…

Thank you for supporting the 2011 DC Shorts Film Festival. In our eighth incredible year,

we are pleased to showcase 145 films and six screenplays from 23 different countries. The

amazing growth and success of DC Shorts has earned us the reputation as “one of the most

influential film festivals” from Moviemaker Magazine, and has made us a repeated top-pick

by local critics and in readers’ polls.

More than 1,100 films and 126 screenplays were submitted to the festival this year. The judging

process began all the way back in March with teams of judges rating each film’s style, content,

originality, and technical merits. Recommendations were then sent on to a team of executive

judges, who viewed the 300+ top scoring films to create the final cut. The final decisions were

difficult and often heavily debated – all so DC Shorts can present the very best films to you!

DC Shorts has always been proud to feature truly independent films and filmmakers. In this age

of digital video, home computers – even HD cameras on cell phones – the ability to create films

has become accessible to everyone. Our festival proves that great film is no longer just from

Hollywood, but from everyone and everywhere.

This year, we are also excited to partner wth the Embassy of

Brazil to showcase 13 wonderful shorts created by some of the

country’s up-and-coming filmmakers. Look for the Embassy’s

logo next to these films’ descriptions. These films will also be screened as part of the Brazilian

Film Week in October. Celebrate with us by attending the special Brazilian Carnival, complete

with salsa bands, dancers, drummers and rum drinks held at the Artisphere.

So butter up that popcorn, get nice and comfy, and enjoy the movies! Remember not to rush out

of the theater after the screening – many showcases have a Q&A session with the filmmakers

who are visiting the District from around the globe.
