PET Student Accepted into Ohio Cat THINK BIG Program CVCC sends a big congratulations to student Matt Lawer on being accepted into the Ohio Cat THINK BIG program. Matt is a senior from Brecksville- Broadview Heights High School enrolled in the Power Equipment Technology program instructed by Mr. Jerry Koenig. This is a full two-year scholarship based on quarterly grades. Upon completion of the training at Owens Community College, Matt is practically guaranteed a full-time position at the Ohio Cat facility in Broadview Heights, Ohio. Way to go Matt, keep up the exceptional work! Early Placement Update The current number of students on Early Placement, as of March 15, is 59 verses 43 for 2017-2018; this reflects a 37% increase in CVCC students being out in our local workforce. These numbers reflect High School seniors with a B average and eleven or fewer absences during their years at CVCC. During Early Placement, students work four afternoons a week instead of attending their CVCC program so that they can have real life work experience to increase their job ready skills. Many of these positions can lead to full-time employment for students following the completion of their program. These 59 students are from 14 different programs participating in Early Placement, Apprenticeship or Paid Internships; we also have one student on a Non-Paid Internship. Students are making a minimum of $8.55, and up to $13.25 per hour. Our average current wage is $10.55, which is 23% higher than the 2019 Ohio minimum wage of $8.55, proving once again that CVCC skills do pay! We thank our in-district employers who are making these jobs a reality: Andy’s Auto Body, Avenue of Macedonia, Dave’s Supermarket, Exit 11 Truck Service, Jump Yard, Sullivan Orthodontic, and Quest Financial and Insurance. We wish these students the best of luck as they contribute to our region’s workforce! CVCC Cosmetology Students Give Back CVCC’s High School Cosmetology B class instructed by Ms. Marilyn Mormile hosted a dress down day to raise funds for the local animal shelter. Career Interview Day at Bath Elementary School On Tuesday, March 12, 226 5th grade students from Bath Elementary School participated in Career Interviews. 34 parents, local business and community members participated in this event as interviewees; including Village of Richfield Mayor Bobbie Beshara, Police Officer Scott Dressler, Bath Fire Chief Walter Hower, Lieutenant John Rodriguez, Fire and Life Safety Educator Lydia Wachna, Revere Local Schools Superintendent Matthew Montgomery (pictured), Principal Julie Gulley, and CVCC’s Principal Mike Hall (pictured). In Late February through early March, Bath Elementary’ s Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Kristi Kerrigan, discussed the various career clusters with the students and identified specific careers in each cluster. Last week, the students viewed a PowerPoint presentation on what an interview is and how to present oneself. The students learned how to dress accordingly, have a firm handshake, give good eye contact, greet the interviewee, say a proper goodbye, as well as appropriately ask the questions: who, what, why, where, and when. After receiving lots of preparation, on the day of the interview event, 3 - 4 students were assigned to each interviewee. Two interview sessions were held to give the students enough time to ask the questions to the interviewee. The interviewees brought in tools of their trade to show the students; however, were instructed to let the students take the lead, as they were very well prepared. Thank you to CVCC’s Career Resource Specialist for the Revere School District, Kathy Dombrowski, for assisting with the preparation of the students and for facilitating this entire event. What a great day of participation and learning!
