Simple Sentences
The basic structure of a sentence contains a subject and a verb.
Its purpose is to express a complete thought.
Extra: A sentence can also be called a independent clause.
In the following ‘simple sentences,’ subjects (or nouns) are in yellow, and verbs are in red.
Examples:
Some students like to study in the mornings.
The children are playing quietly.
The class read peacefully.
Compound Sentences
These are words that connect ‘simple sentences’ together to create compound sentences. The logic of making compound sentences is basically the same as making compound words. This time instead of having two words mashed together - we mash two sentences together with a connecting word.
Connecting WordsThe words we use to connect simple sentences together.
