2Counselor Corner

· Dual Enrollment students, we hope that you have a wonderful Spring semester! Please remember to take advantage of the free tutoring and writing services that FSW and FGCU offer. If you need assistance, please see your school counselor.

· Seniors, please remember that the time to apply for financial aid, grants, and scholarships is now. If you need any assistance completing these applications or if you have not yet completed your Bright Future Scholarship application, please see your school counselor. FAFSA NIGHT! Thursday, February 18, from 6:00-8:00p.m., in room S107. This is an opportunity for you and your parent/guardian to complete the FAFSA with assistance from the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. You may stop in at any time between 6:00-8:00pm; there is no need to make an appointment. Bring your 2015 tax returns, or if you have not yet filed, bring 2014 tax returns.

· Juniors, this year you should be narrowing down your postsecondary* education plans. These plans should be tied to your future career goals. If you are uncertain of what career path you would like to pursue, then explore the career planning tools at floridashines.org (free service to Florida students), and check out the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Online Handbook at BLS.gov. Once you have a career path in mind, you can begin to search for the postsecondary education and training programs needed to enter the field. Ideally, you should enter your senior year of high school knowing to which postsecondary programs you plan to apply. Don’t forget to sign up for your SAT/ACT this year. If you qualified for free or reduced lunch last year, or if you think that you may otherwise qualify for a testing fee waiver, please see your school counselor.

*Postsecondary means “after high school.” · Sophomores/Freshmen, we will be visiting your Language Arts or Information Technology classes at the start of second semester to review each of your academic histories* and review graduation requirements with you.

*An academic history shows all of the classes you have taken, your grades in those classes, and the number of credits you have earned. Academic histories also show your FCAT and EOC scores, and your overall weighted and unweighted grade point averages (GPA).

4Special Olympics 2015

Cypress Lake High School’s “Be A Buddy” program integrates students with disabilities and mainstream students through their involvement in the activities and events with the special education department. This was our 11th Annual Lee County Special Olympics High School Field Day. We hosted all (13) high schools in Lee County. After the events, we hosted a lunch for approximately 1,800 people who participated and donated their time to help make the Special Olympics Field Day possible. HISTORY: Cypress Lake has the biggest “Be A Buddy” Program in Lee County with over 400 members-- and counting, each year. In 2005, we started the Special Olympics here at Cypress Lake High school, and have hosted the event every year since. In 2010, we started a “Be A Buddy” night for sporting events at our school. We attend football, volleyball and basketball games together. We have continued this every year, and have had 150 mainstream students attend football games with our ESE students. In 2013, the student body nominated special needs students as both the homecoming King and Queen for the first time in Lee County and only the 2nd time in the United States. Also in 2013, student Aubrey Bengston started a homecoming dance during the school day for the ESE students that could not attend the dance at night. The dance was held in an ESE classroom. This year Rachel Stewart took a student from the Life Skills class dress shopping for an upcoming dance and Brianna Walker started an every other day singing class for Life Skill students. “Be A Buddy” also started a scholarship, named “Mrs. Cathy’s Scholarship,” that will go to a student who will work with people with disabilities.VOLUNTEERS: In order for this program to be successful student volunteers are needed. The idea is to pair up one ESE student with one regular education student for the activity and be their buddy. For most of the students this is one of the most unforgettable learning experiences in their young lives. We have had several buddies that have stayed in touch with their new friend to this day. Over 75 Alumni buddies have gone on to become teachers in Lee County. This program has knocked down so many walls between the ESE students and the regular education students. We continue to grow our Circle of Friends!!! We are always looking for more volunteers and donations for “Be A Buddy” and “Mrs. Cathy’s Scholarship”. If you would like to donate to the scholarship please email Todd Dusenberry at [email protected] Finally, we would like to thank our sponsors who helped make our 2015 Special Olympics a huge success!

The following businesses, individuals, and organizations have made donations to CLHSCA this year. We would like to thank them for their continued support of our students and staff. Community members like you are what makes Cypress “No Place I’d Rather Be.” Thank you very much!Bellacino’sJason’s DeliSave A LotPizza PubTwo Meatballs Lazy Flamingo Buckets Shoeless JoesBlue MoonZaxbysParadise PizzaIl Primo Fords GaragePDQMcDonald’sSpruce Refrigeration Dr. Carmen AulinoSanibel A/CFamous Dave’s Hooters 41Outback FlippersTorchlight ProductionsJets PizzaGavins HardwareThe Youngs
