The basis of the Yin and Yang theory
teaches us that there are always two sides
to everything, which are inseparable from each other;
when something is called Yin, Yang is automatically
present as well. The absolute Yin or Yang does not exist.
There is no absolute dark or light; in the night when it’s
dark, we can still see and at daytime during the ‘white
light’ there are always shadows. Therefore black always
goes together with white.
The same applies for our Food & Drink design at our
‘Black/White’ exposition. For instance, our ‘Magic
Mushroom’ ( black broth of Trompet de la Morte with
White Truffle cream), the ‘White Ocean Fish’ (purée of
cauliflower with ink black butterfish), or for example
the ‘Photo Shooter’ (white Piña Colada with black
pineapple).

tonen. Als een raster, grid, zullen gedurende zes
weken galeries, musea, landen, fotoagentschap-
pen, fotografen, reclamemakers en andere creatieven
zich op verschillende locaties presenteren met
zeer uiteenlopende exposities. Zowel regionaal als
internationaal. Experimenteel en toegankelijk. In
gerenommeerde galeries en op onconventionele
locaties.

BRIGITTE VINCKEN
Photographer Brigitte Vincken knows how
to draw parallels between her subject
and the vulnerability of the aesthetic. Her images are
polished and groomed, allowing her models to become
immortal and sometimes even sacred.
Computer manipulation is not used as a composition
tool, but rather as a conscious necessity for her.
Sometimes it looks as if her images are covered with
a ‘silk’ layer or a ‘velvet’ touch. Whatever it is, it is her
trademark and she is becoming known for this unique
and haunting quality in her photography
Photographic assignments have taken her around the
world and her pursuit of photographic ‘perfection’
results in a perfect quality that we also find in the
images of Horst.
The international editorial work of Brigitte Vincken
often achieves the higher standard of commercial
advertising photography found in the contemporary
fashion industry. In that way she raises some editorial
clients to a higher quality level and in the process
raises the bar for many international brands.
Brigitte Vincken chooses to work globally and her al-
ways-travelling, professional lifestyle finds her based in
both Milan and Amsterdam.
Fotograaf Brigitte Vincken weet parallellen
te trekken tussen haar onderwerp en de
kwetsbaarheid van de esthetiek. Haar beelden zijn
verzorgd en gepolijst, zodat haar modellen onsterfelijk,
(soms) bijna heilig worden.
Computer manipulatie wordt niet gebruikt als een
instrument voor compositie, maar veeleer als een
bewuste noodzaak.
Amsterdam.
tentoonstelling. Het werk is nieuw en persoonlijk.

The images are both completely new and personal.
With these images, Brigitte Vincken is commenting on
the current state of society: it pressures us into more
dependency on perfectionism as an antidote to the
perceived loss of youth and the fear of death.

voorstellen.
Malou van Breevoort (1974). After finishing the
necessary education needs, she leaves for Asia to travel
the mystic grounds of the East, ending up living and
working in Indonesia for nearly two years.
Back in Holland the urge to put her creativity to work
grows. The Photo Academy in Amsterdam accepted
her and after only three years her hard work is starting
to pay off. In her final year at the Academy, she wins
several awards and ends up in the Big Apple (USA)
where she has her first succesfull group exhibition
outside the Netherlands in the fall of 2003.
Her specialities are illustrative portraits and
progressive series in which she will not pull back for
delicate and political matters.
These days Malou is based in Amsterdam where
she works as a freelance photographer for several
magazines and advertising agencies. She also teaches
at the Photo Academy and travels the world whenever
possible for her ongoing series which she exhibits both
in the Netherlands and abroad.
Thirteen
Serie of four girls all in the age group of thirteen.
Because of for example the influence of internet,
television, prints, magazines, we see teenagers these
days getting older at very young ages with requests that
are presumably only allowed for the elder generations.
Because of this item, Malou photographed these girls
and afterwards altered the faces into more adultery
looking girls.
Voordat Malou van Breevoort (1974) op de
fotoacademie in Amsterdam terecht kwam
Thirteen
hun eigenlijke leeftijd zou verraden.

Serie of three individuals who are showed within each
portrait the sickness and health situation in the world.
The images were shot with soft dark dim light to create
a mood of despair and pain which was enhanced in the
post production.
At the same time you see the softness on the other side
of the face, which illustrates the possibilities to create a
cure or at least a bridge in the world we live in.

MARNIX POSTMA
Marnix Postma started his career in a
different line of work. The first two years
he studied at the Art Academy of Rotterdam. At the
Art academy he was not able to express his creativity
to the extend he wanted to, but he was introduced to
photography. From then he knew he found his talent
and passion, so he switched to study at the Photo
Academy of Amsterdam.
He developed his technical skills, which he perfected
autonomously. After following a masterclass at Tom van
Heel and Edel Verzijl, Marnix changed his style.
He developed his conceptual side and combined with
his technical background, he is now able to produce
very interesting images.
‘Bad Ass’ is a fashion report, portraying the male
youth from the New York ghetto’s, who are trying to
reach ‘The American Dream’. These guys work their
way up in society by any means necessary. In these
neighbourhoods, good and bad are not as black and
white as in our, for example Dutch, society. And this
might be their only way to escape poverty.
volledig kwijt kon.
achterbuurten ‘The American Dream’ probeert te
bereiken.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Photographer Anne Makaske balances out
her need for ‘pretty pictures’ in the fashion
industry with a need for ‘the truth’ in society. As an
autonomous photographer she can afford to look the
other way and find out what lies beneath the obvious.
‘Shades of Grey’
After WWII all parties involved found their own way to
‘remember’. Now, almost 65 years later, many veterans
have re-established their opinion regarding their old
opponent. They have come to see that there is no need
to keep each other down in an everlasting struggle.
I think it shows enormous strength of emotion and
character to concur pain and grief and come to a point
where the future matters more then the past. New
generations, our generation, borrowed their memories
and emotions to form our opinion and create some
kind of an ‘anti-German culture’. All too soon there will
not be anyone left to put history in perspective. Except
for the people who form the core of ‘Shades of Grey’,
stepping away from ‘black & white thinking’. It deals
with the human capacity to make up our own mind. The
projects’ point of view refers directly to the people in the
picture. Each of them was, because of the war, at some
point, confronted with this question and their response
to it was of enormous consequence. Men who once
were each other’s opponent, Dutch and German, look
us straight in the eye, challenging us to think.
www.annemakaske.com
ANNE MAKASKE
‘Shades of Grey’
over hun voormalige tegenstander herzien. Zij hebben
zich bevrijd uit de belemmerende Nederlands-Duitse
worsteling.

Leather Lampshades
Its shape refers to old metal industrial lamps, though
the material has changed into a soft and genuine
lambskin leather. This appearance makes the
lampshade lightweight and completely collapsible and
therefore easy to transport. These lampshades are
carefully handmade. We attach high value to an ethical
production process. One that is as natural as possible
for the environment.
The production itself is done in Mumbai, India, in
collaboration with the Tiny Miracles Foundation. This
foundation brightens up the life of street children. We
let their underprivileged mothers assembling the

MAARTEN BAPTIST
Maarten Baptist wins Red Dot Design
Award 2010
The Dutch designer Maarten Baptist has won a Red Dot
Design Award; one of the most coveted prizes in the
world of design. His ‘Single Sofa’, which combines the
classic seating functions of a sofa with a chaise longue
and day bed without taking up any extra space, won in
the product design class.
Single Sofa
At first glance the ‘Single Sofa’ could be mistaken for
any archetypal couch, with two armrests, an upright
backrest and a generous seat. So what makes it
special? Well it’s that angle in the seat that has turned it
into an Award winner. With that kink, cunningly shaped
for the human form, Baptist has made the ‘Single Sofa’
the ideal couch for sitting, lounging or even sleeping.
And the jury of the Red Dot Design Award also found the
design extremely good to look at.
Maarten Baptist: ‘If you pay attention to how people use
objects, you will notice that most people do not actually
sit on a sofa: more often they sprawl, lounge or curl up
in a corner. That is why those huge corner units are so
popular. But you need a lot of room for one of those. The
‘Single Sofa’ is the answer.’
A special edition of the ‘Single Sofa’ performed in black
with Swarovski crystals, can be seen in Dutch Design
Hotel Artemis during the exhibition ‘Black & White’.
Maarten Baptist wint Red Dot Design Award
2010
Red Dot Design Award.
expositie ‘Zwart & Wit’ in Dutch Design Hotel Artemis.

Kirsten Spuijbroek (Sprang-Capelle, 1981)
graduated at the Institute of Arts and
Design, ArtEZ in Arnhem in 2009. Since then she has
been working as a independent jewellery designer.
She is driven by her fascination for deep human
emotions, traditions and symbolism which are a
constant source of inspiration. She likes to show those
often neglected emotions in her jewellery, as a means
to stay connected with the inner self. ‘Jewellery is a
highly personal piece of art, that by wearing it makes
contact with your body. It shows who you are on the
inside, without it being a fashion statement.’
Spuijbroek likes to experiment by researching
materials and techniques. A combination of both often
leads to her designs. She starts with a concept, a story
she would like to tell. She usually has a strong tendency
towards certain materials, which she feels that fit the
story. Then she simply starts experimenting with these
materials.
IM MEMORIOM
The modern way of living focuses mainly on success,
often forgetting to pay attention to the deeper meanings
in life. Mourning is one of them, the western world sees
it as a personal process which you could and should
be able get through yourself. People should pay more
attention to these very important moments in life and

Men
kenisvollere omgeving.
Deze collectie unieke rouwsieraden is tot stand
gekomen met eigen ontwikkelde technieken, zoals

take their time. Not just for themselves, but also for a
meaningful environment.
This is a collection of unique pieces of mourning
jewellery, which are all handmade with techniques
she developed herself. Such as dipping real flowers
in porcelain. When the flowers are put in the oven
they burn away completely. Then when opened up, the
imprint of the flowers become visible.
Next to the presentation of the permanent collection,
Kirsten Spuijbroek makes jewellery in commission.

DEBBIE WIJSKAMP
Debbie Wijskamp (Zevenaar, 1984) works
and lives in Arnhem.
During her study Product Design at the Hogeschool
voor de Kunsten in Arnhem, where she graduated
in 2009, she developed her passion for interiors and
designing interior products. After graduating she
started her own design studio, where she mainly
works on her own product collections; designs that she
generally produces herself.
For her ‘Paperpulp’ collection, cabinets and tableware
made of waste paper, designing and applying her ‘own
material’ is the initial concept. Inspired by different
cultures, people constructing their homes with
materials found in their surroundings, Wijskamp wanted
to design her own building material. Experimenting
with the re-usage of wastepaper resulted in a material
with its own characteristic appearance and structure.
Besides this, it is a very versatile material with many
possible applications.
In contrast with the cabinets, the Paperpulp tableware
items are very fragile decoration objects. The colour
of the pots depend on the amount of ink used in the
recycled newspapers and makes every piece unique.
‘During the Paperpulp experiment I found out that this
way of working gives me a lot of freedom. It gives me
total control in the designing process; from producing
my own material to a finished product. It gives me
freedom to create my ‘own world’.’
Debbie Wijskamp (Zevenaar, 1984) werkt en
woont in Arnhem.
haar afstuderen opende zij haar eigen ontwerpstudio
waar ze vooral werkt aan haar eigen productcollecties;
ontwerpen waarvan ze de productie grotendeels in
eigen hand houdt.
wilde Wijskamp haar eigen bouwmateriaal maken.

PROPER
Proper is a creative collaboration between
Martine van der Horst (1971) and Anke
Viersma (1971). They design and manufacture furniture,
objects and interiors, both commissioned and non-
commissioned.
In recent years Proper has developed their own
particular idiom. Their designs are clear-cut and pure,
characterized by simple details. Their work reveals
inspirational sources ranging from the Dutch illustrator
Dick Bruna to science-fiction movies and minimalist
artists such as Donald Judd.
All Proper objects and furniture are handmade and
therefore produced in small series or even as single
editions. Artistic freedom and the creative process play
a more important role in Proper’s creation of new work,
than functionality or production techniques do. This
often results in unexpected, independent designs that
exceed the usual boundaries of furniture design and
affect the visual arts.
During the exhibition ‘Black & White’ in Dutch Design
Hotel Artemis, Proper will be exhibiting selected works
from their ‘Black & White’ Collection.
Proper is een samenwerkingsverband tussen
Martine van der Horst (1971) en Anke Viersma
‘Zwart & Wit’ collectie.

GEKE LENSINK & JESSE VISSER
Geke Lensink and Jesse Visser are two
independent designers who live and work
in Amsterdam. Both designers develop products and
furniture independently and often collaborate on
various interior projects.
TM collection.
The ‘TM Collection’ is a distinct collection of furniture,
for which they took the challenge of working together
with a new material. They ended up at a design where
both their visions and signature are visible.
The collection consists of a number of tables, matching
chairs and stools, for indoor and outdoor use.
The architectural character and colour options
make this collection ideal for public spaces such
as restaurants, schools and commercial premises.
Besides the collection is very stylish for home and
garden.
The ‘TM Collection’ is remarkably lightweight and
distinguishes itself by the glossy finish on the soft
seating. This gives the objects a chic character and very
easy to maintain. The furniture is practical, comfortable
and durable.
First collection (Milk, Hot Chocolate, Coffee, Tea,
and Espresso Doppio) The cup series from the ‘First
Collection is a product by Geke Lensink.
The collection is still being extended. It began with the
development of the cup using the classical form as
a basis for the rest of the collection. Because of the
simplicity and traditional production, the series has a
unique, personal and charming character.
Geke Lensink en Jesse Visser zijn twee
individuele ontwerpers die wonen en werken in
Amsterdam. Beide ontwerpers ontwikkelen zelfstandig
meubels en interieurproducten, daarnaast werken ze
vaak samen aan uiteenlopende interieurprojecten.
TM Collection
bedrijfsruimtes. Daarnaast zijn ze ook erg geschikt
voor huis en tuin.
De ‘TM Collection’ is opvallend licht in gewicht en
onderscheidt zich ook door de glanzende afwerking
op de zachte zitelementen. Dit geeft de objecten een
chique karakter en erg gemakkelijk in onderhoud. De
meubels zijn praktisch, comfortabel en duurzaam.
First Collection (Milk, Hot Chocolat, Coffee, Tea en

ISABEL QUIROGA
The Story continues
‘The story continues’ is the sequel of
Quirogas design bookrack ‘Storyteller’. The concept of
the bookrack is stacking old (second hand) furniture.
Besides her environmental reasons for using second
hand furniture, Quiroga is fascinated by the use of them.
Isabel Quiroga: ‘If they were able to talk, they would have
so much stories to tell us. This characteristic makes
them stand out of mass production.’ You can customize
this design to anyone’s taste or acquirements. The use
of second hand furniture as well as the use of different
colours on each object makes every design unique!
Low Lands
This secretary is the first in its series ‘Low Lands’, a
furniture line inspired by Dutch history. The concept of
this design was based on William I, Prince of Orange.
Important historical digits of William his life have been
translated into the measurements of this secretary.
The depths of the secretary, 51 cm, represent his age.
Its length, 107 cm, represents his date of birth. Quiroga
chose to design a secretary based on the status of
William of Orange. The choice for a mobile furniture,
because William of Orange travelled for the better part
of his life and had been on the run the last years of his
life.
The Story Continues
technische achtergrond; Quiroga is gefascineerd

for aesthetics and shapes, in techniques she further
developed after her graduation at the well known
Eindhoven Design Academy. Designs were made
with many different materials, but there is a high
preference for natural materials. Studio Lara de Greef
is very active and an abundance of designs has been
launched, ranging from glasswork, ceramic vases
to bamboo furniture. Presentations of her work took
place at various national and international podia, from
Amsterdam, London, Milan and Budapest to New York.

ontwerpen gelanceerd, variërend van glaswerk en
keramische vazen tot bamboe meubels. Presentaties
Olympic Gold
In de Griekse oudheid werden belangrijke
gebeurtenissen vaak afgebeeld op keramiek.
Deze momenten, van geboorte tot gouden bruiloft,
werden op tragische, verheven wijze gepresenteerd.
Tegenwoordig wordt deze manier van presenteren
nog steeds gebruikt, bijvoorbeeld door het chique
Wedgwood serviesgoed.
hetzelfde.’

Olympic Gold
In Greek antiquity major events were often depicted on
ceramics. These events, from birth until golden wedding,
were shown in a tragic, elevated manner. Today, this way
of presenting is still used, for example by high quality
Wedgwood china. These elegant, sophisticated, three-
dimensional decorations are loved by people from all
walks of life. Lara de Greef likes to decorate ceramics
with images that call for more recognition with everyday
acts of life, such as dressing and undressing, getting
into or out one’s shoes, sweeping the floor or practising
sports.
High Heeled Service
A Series of saucers that differ in height. ‘I have
constructed a method to vary within a production
process of one unique product. By pouring a self
determined quantity of clay into the mould, the product
always varies. This results in an endless variety of one
singular item. I use this method since the industrial
production process, in my opinion, neglects the
character of individual products.’
Scarification series
The skin of specific tribal people after scarification, a
rite de passage, explores notions of joy and sorrow, of
beauty and pain. The sensitive sphere of this texture,
when applied within the ceramic skin, could release
similar sentiments. Lara created vases and embroiled
small patterns on the surface to use this vase as the
blueprint for the mould. Accordingly she poured plaster
around this shape, creating a mould in the form of the
vase. This plaster, of course, got completely stuck within
texture of the embroiled patterns. Therefore, when the
mould was taken of, many scarifications carved them
through the skin of the mould, creating a hybrid sense of
fragility and force, both positive as negative.
1+1=3
Series of three vases, build up out of second-hand
products. By recycling and combining existing shapes,
new forms arise.
