DERRY H ILL AND STUDLEY V ILLAGE FETE Fete sponsorship is flourishing! In addition to our two silver sponsors
Active Plumbing and PSP Insurance we can now announce two bronze
sponsors. The bar at the fete will be sponsored by Dick Willows cider
makers of Bathford (www.dickwillows.com), who has kindly pledged two
barrels of cider, so I hope for a warm, thirsty day. Secondly, we are grateful
to Strakers estate agents of Chippenham (www.strakers.co.uk) who have
agreed to sponsor our entertainment zone. We are thrilled with the support
we are getting from these local businesses and look forward to working
with them towards a successful fete experience for all.
Amongst the new ideas for this year we wanted to include an Arts & Crafts
Village – an area where local cottage industries can sell their wares to you
directly. We are really pleased to say that we have assembled a really great
selection of such stalls including:
• Tinies & Arans – selling quality, hand knitted children’s clothes;
• Bodrighy Wood – wood turned products.
(www.bodrighywood.co.uk);
• Rios Rocks, beautiful jewellery in sterling silver, artisan lampwork,
semi-precious stones, sea glass and pearls.
(http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/studio/RiosRocks);
• Huntington’s Disease Charity – selling jams and chutneys;
• Box Candles;
• Derry Dough Bakery – offering bread and other baked products.
I mentioned last month that we have introduced a traditional Arts & Crafts
Show to the fete this year, providing all ages with an opportunity to enter a
variety of classes. How many entries will you submit? Will you win the
coveted PSP Insurance Cup for best in show? If you cannot find your
schedule of classes and entry form then they are all available on
2
www.calnerural.org. You can still secure great entry prices by sending in
your completed forms before the end of June but from July 1st onwards the
price increases dramatically. If you would be interested in judging any of
the classes (behind closed doors) then please contact me.
Do you want to raise your company’s profile at the fete? How about
donating a raffle prize and/or taking out advertising in the fete
programme? Drop me a line on the email below and we can discuss that
further.
Next month, a word about the entertainment and our exhibits. For more
information follow the Fete organising committee on Facebook and Twitter.

THANK YOU I should like to thank everyone at Derry Hill and the surrounding area for
all their many cards, letters, flowers, telephone calls and visits; all with
supporting prayers, thoughts and sympathy for me concerning the recent
sad loss of my husband Leonard Beint on 30th January 2012 at Athelstan
House, Malmesbury, which was on our 70th Wedding Anniversary. After
3
the cremation service at Semington for Leonard, followed immediately by a
memorial service at Christ Church, Derry Hill the church was full.
Some details of Leonard’s life are:
Chairman (Retired) - Messrs. W.E. Beint and Sons Ltd.
Timber Merchants.
Hon. Life Member – Western and Southern Home Grown Timber
Merchants Association – President for 2 Years serving 25 years on
Executive Committee. Over 20 years on Market Liaison Committee and
over 20 years on National Joint Industrial Council.
School Governor for 40 years. Parish Councillor for over 20 years.
Church Warden for 30 years. Licensed by the Bishop to administer the
chalice.
May I also thank our vicar, Ann Massey, for conducting the crematorium
and Memorial services for Leonard.
With good wishes to everyone,
Sincerely,
Brenda Beint.
DERRY H ILL DEFIBRILLATOR
IN MEMORY OF MARTIN DADD As we pass the first anniversary of Martin’s death, Chloe, Sophie and
Emma have decided to complete a sponsored swim to raise funds for
buying a defibrillator for Derry Hill.
On Friday 5 April we will attempt to swim a mile each at Calne Leisure
Centre to boost the funds that are already being raised to have a
defibrillator in Derry Hill that any member of the public can access and use
with instruction from the emergency services. The defibrillator will be kept
in a vandal proof, weatherproof box somewhere in Derry Hill and if anyone
ever has the misfortune to need to phone 999 because someone has gone
into cardiac arrest, the emergency services will have our defibrillator on
their database. They will then issue the code to unlock the box so that the
defibrillator can be accessed. Full instructions on how to use the
defibrillator come up on the screen but the emergency services will also talk
anyone through it, so it can be used by anyone. There is also a plan to be
able to run training sessions on using the defibrillator if funds allow.
4
If you would like to sponsor us in what we think is a worthwhile cause,
please contact us on 07855 160652, [email protected] or come and
see one of us! You can also donate online straight into our Lloyds Bank
Account (Account Number 02447902, Sort Code 30-91-99. Please put the
reference Defibrillator).
Thank you for your support – our aim is to stop someone else having to
wait for 16 minutes for help and a defibrillator to arrive.

DERRY H ILL AND D ISTRICT WI In February we had a talk from Malcolm Jago, on Bath,
which was very interesting and his slides were wonderful.
Learning some of the lesser known facts was great and
hearing about a place that we all know, in varying degrees,
made the talk that bit more special. The competition, a
picture of Bath, was won by Sally.
The first Denman Bursary Draw was held and the winners were
Jan Ephgrave and Margaret Hogarth - I’m sure they will both enjoy their
time at Denman College and we await their feedback from the visits.
We have a new and exciting programme for the coming year which details
our walks, knitting dates, coffee mornings and extra social and fundraising
events, as well as our speakers. Some dates for diaries are the 3rd April,
which will be a coffee morning at Janet Stock’s home (with lovely views of
the ‘grey’ horse and the Lansdowne Monument) at 11.00am, and the
9th April, which will be a walk around Corsham. The 2nd May will be a
knitting afternoon, 2.30pm at Margaret Hogarth’s. and the 16th May will
be a Dolls’ House coffee morning at Sheila’s at 11.00am - come and see
some old (vintage Triang houses) and new (Quarter scale houses, as I’m
running out of space!) and you might even be tempted by a new hobby.
Our next meeting will be on the 24th April and Marie-Noelle Witty will be
coming back to give us more information on ‘How the French Eat’, this time
concentrating on picnics. She is an excellent speaker and we were all
fascinated by her last talk. The competition will be for a Continental
Holiday Souvenir.
6
If you are interested in coming to any of the above, or would like to come to
a meeting, please phone Tina on 01249 814145, or just pop in. Our
Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of every month, at
The Lansdowne Hall, Derry Hill, starting at 7.30pm.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITY Jesus appeared to the disciples many times after the tomb in which he was
laid was found empty on Easter Day. One of those appearances was on the
beach. Some of the disciples were fishing and saw Jesus on the beach. He
told them to cast their nets to the other side of their boats and they would
catch lots of fish. They did this and netted lots of fish and then recognised
the man on the shore as Jesus. When they came to the shore Jesus cooked
them breakfast.
Maybe you would like to make an underwater scene with lots of fish
swimming about avoiding the nets of the fishermen!
Or perhaps you would like to play a game! This one is called ‘Magnetic
Fishing’. You will need: silver card, black marker pen, metal paper clips,
smooth bamboo cane, string, small magnets and a small paddling pool.
Cut out card fish, in sets of three, in various sizes. Number each set 1, 2, 3.
Fix some paper clips onto each fish. Make your fishing rods by attaching
the cane and magnet to opposite ends of a length of string. (Keep the
strings short to avoid accidents.) Set up the paddling pool and lay the fish
in the bottom with the numbers showing. Younger children can simply
play at catching fish. Others can catch their fish in order: 1, then 2 and then
3. (If you use water in the pool then the children will need to be supervised
and the fish made from non-absorbent materials such as acetate, or the fish
could be laminated before the paperclips are attached).

MOTHERS ’ UNION – DERRY H ILL Eight members of Mothers’ Union from
Christ Church joined with members from
across the diocese on Saturday March 9th
for a Festival Service at Salisbury Cathedral. The service was for the
Commissioning of members into official roles for the next triennium and to
welcome and admit new members.
The Bishop of Salisbury – Bishop Nicholas - was enrolled as a member and
then went on to welcome from Derry Hill Lorna Simons as a new member
and to admit and welcome Colette Som to membership.
We had been asked by our President – Ann Howard – to create and make a
contemporary design for the other side of our banners. Nan Bird did this
for us – creating a design from our badge symbolising the work of the
Mothers’ Union worldwide, and the colours of the rainbow to represent the
Hannah Project of last year when we looked at ways of using our skills to
8
develop the work of the Mothers’ Union. Nan also carried the banner for
us at the Cathedral.
This was a wonderful service in which we celebrated the work of the
Mothers’ Union.
The banner is now back in Christ Church where the new design can be
viewed.
Members of the Mothers Union met in Christ Church on March 6th.
Deirdre led us in prayer and read from the bible. She gave us the good
news that Archdeacon Ruth had agreed to open this year's Christmas
Fayre. Members agreed that the "Celebration of Love" service had been a
success and ladies that had helped with refreshments were thanked.
Maybe we could have a weekend of celebration next year with an
exhibition of photos and perhaps dresses.
Both Christine and Nan had seen girls with "virtual babies" from the
scheme instigated by the Mothers Union aiming to give an insight into the
difficulties of bringing up a baby as a single mother.
Members decided that to celebrate the "Big Lunch" in June, as we are
entertaining our speaker to lunch, we would each bring a guest so that we
could further publicise the work of the Mothers Union. The alternative
contemporary Church banner that Nan has made for the service at
Salisbury Cathedral was admired and members were asked to think about
the design of the all-weather banner to be used at outside events.
If you would like to know more about the Mothers’ Union please do get in
touch. We meet on the first Wednesday in each month at 2.30pm in Christ
Church; if you would be interested in joining us or would just like to come
along and see what we do then you are welcome to any of our meetings.

DERRY H ILL SCHOOL REPORT We are all very excited to confirm the new front reception is now open
providing a fabulous welcome to all parents and visitors to the school. We
are really fortunate to have a television on the wall which is currently
displaying some really wonderful pictures of our pupils hard at work and
having fun in school. This will be joined by a display of children’s work
and a parent information notice board. We held a blessing of the new
extension on Tuesday 12th March which was led by the Bishop of
Ramsbury and Reverend Ann Massey in the school playground for our
parents and governors.
The school celebrated World Book Day on Thursday the 7th March by
inviting children’s author Martin Coleman to visit the school to talk to the
children about his books. After school the children came back to school
wearing their pyjamas for bedtime stories, hot chocolate and biscuits. The
children thoroughly enjoyed the event and a great time was spent by
children and adults.
The annual Bikeathon organised by the Friends of Derry Hill School took
place on Saturday 16th March 2013 at 11.30am from Bowood car park.
Families were invited to come along and enjoy cycling through the
beautiful Bowood grounds on the 6 mile course. All children completing
the course received certificates and medals at the finish line, which is
always a nice way to end the journey.
The Friends of Derry Hill School have organised an Easter Egg Hunt on
Wednesday 20th March for the children to take part in. This is always a
popular event and hopefully the weather will have been kind to us on the
day.
Finally the school showed their support for Comic Relief by having a non-
uniform day and donning red noses on Thursday 14th March. Donations
for wearing non uniform go directly to Comic Relief.

GARDENING STEVE Hi everyone. I cannot believe how quickly this year is going. April is now
upon us. This is an exciting month as the Winter months have passed and
Summer is just around the corner, and the garden is slowly coming back to
life and all the migrating birds that have spent the Winter months in
warmer countries come back to the UK. Let’s hope this Summer is better
than last year.
Anyway it is now time to plant all your Summer flowering bulbs in the
borders and tubs. Gladioli are always nice in the garden they are easy to
grow and result in stunning colour displays, when planting break down
any large clumps of soil and plant bulbs 2 or 3 times their own depth and 2
bulbs width apart. If you have bought a lot of bulbs stagger the planting
this will give you colour all the summer.
Start getting your vegetable seeds sown. You can sow early lettuce, peas
radishes, and potatoes. Also its time to start planting your onion and
shallot sets. Choose a well-drained and sunny position. Plant the onion
sets 10cm apart, rows 20cm apart and for the shallots 15cm apart in rows of
around 22cm apart.
Start to prepare and plant your hanging baskets with your favourite
Summer annuals towards mid-month. Use a layer of wool or moss in the
bottom of the basket as a liner and bring it up on the sides fill the basket
with good quality compost then add the plants. Keep the basket in the
greenhouse until bringing it out towards the end of May. Continue feeding
all your plants in the greenhouse with a good liquid feed. This will ensure
the plants are healthy.
Have a good gardening month. See you next month.
Stephen Starr Bowood Gardener.

ARTICLE FROM THE PAST ….for Derry Hill, April 1953…..
These words are being written at
Clevedon, where, on doctor’s orders, I am
trying to save my voice further injury after
‘flu and severe laryngitis.
How close is the parallel between sickness
and sin! The germ of temptation attacks
us, and because our spiritual resistance
has not been built up, it succeeds in
victoriously penetrating the citadel of our
hearts. Perhaps, like our first attack of
‘flu, we take it too lightly and think we
have recovered.
But there is no recovery until the insidious poison has been driven out.
(How lightly, for example, we consider gossip, or a malicious remark – but
oh, how the poison spreads and increases.) And so, with the system
weakened, all manner of diseases attack and hurt the soul in places and
ways far removed from the original attack. What we need is the sun – the
blessed sun – to warm and cheer us, and to drive away the malignant
vapours – and the all blessed sun of righteousness – who comes at
Eastertide, to drive away the poisonous effects of our sins, and to give us
new health and strength.
We are very grateful to the Rev. R. Watts, R.A.F. chaplain at Compton
Bassett, Mr. Clements of Devizes, the Rev. R, Wood and Mr. Goodship of
Calne, for their generous help in taking services during my enforced
absence.
With Eastertide comes the season of annual meetings. The date will be
announced in church and a notice placed on the door. It is the bounden
duty of those who claim any allegiance to the church to attend the meeting
and to offer their constructive help and ideas.
Wishing you all a very happy Easter - L. W. G. Hudson

ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING On the 16th April in Christ Church, Derry Hill the Annual Meeting for
Christ Church. This is preceded by The Meeting of Parishioners i.e. all
who are listed on the government’s electoral roll or the church’s electoral
roll in Derry Hill and Studley. This meeting elects the churchwardens for
the forthcoming year. At present Stephen Starr is willing to stand again for
election but ideally we would like to have a second churchwarden too. If
anyone would like to suggest someone for this important role then do have
a chat to Reverend Ann (01249 817926) – she would be very pleased to hear
from you!
Additionally, if you know someone who would like to join the PCC, then
also have a word with Reverend Ann.
This year we will begin the evening at 7.30pm with a very short act of
worship followed by the elections and meeting. The reports will be
available in the church prior to the evening, for collection, so that they can
be read and then commented on during the meeting. It is not intended to
read the reports out at the meeting but just to receive comments and
questions.
The meetings will be followed by refreshments and thanks to all who do so
much to continue the life of Christ Church. I would like very much to
thank all the people who work so diligently in the background as well as
those I see as part of Sunday worship. So, come and share in a review of
the past as well as hear about exciting plans for the future and then stay
and have a drink and a nibble so that I, and the PCC, can say thank you to
you properly!
Best wishes
Reverend Ann
CALNE W ITHOUT PARISH COUNCIL NEWS (Derry Hill and Studley are a part of the Calne Without Parish)
The last meeting was held on 4th March. Progress reports were made on
Emergency Planning, Neighbourhood Planning and Street lighting. It was
reported that each ward was in the process of drawing up relevant
information on key resources and vulnerabilities, which will be drawn into
a ‘Master Emergency Plan’ for the whole Parish. It was agreed to set up a
13
Steering Group comprising of councillors and members of the public to
look at revising the Parish Plan and possibly, allied to this, a
Neighbourhood Plan. (Please see the call for members for this below).
Brought forward from the last meeting was a request to support Wiltshire
Council in turning off unnecessary highway lighting. It was felt that to
save energy and expense was a good idea, but not at the detriment of
safety, particularly of pedestrians. Earlier in the meeting, at Public
Speaking Time, Paula Edwards requested that the Parish Council adopt the
Telephone box on Church Road with the view to housing a defibrillator in
it. This will be formally tabled at the next meeting. Wiltshire Councillor,
Christine Crisp, informed the meeting that the Hills Waste application for a
large recycling plant in Lower Compton, is to be delayed whilst the
company looks further into the impact of transporting so much waste in
and out of the site.
The Clerk reminded councillors that they would shortly need to file their
application to stand for election. Local government elections are on
Thursday May 2nd.
These are my informal notes. Please note that the official minutes, when
they have been passed, are available on line at: www.calnewithout.org
Richard Aylen Parish Councillor
PARISH STEERING GROUP - CALNE W ITHOUT The Parish of Calne Without includes Calstone, Lower Compton, Ratford,
Derry Hill, Pewsham, Studley, Sandy Lane, Stockley and Mile Elm.
The Parish Council is setting up a Steering Group to initiate the revision of
the Parish Plan and look into the possibility of creating a Neighbourhood
Plan.
A Parish Plan sets out where the Parish is at the moment in terms of
Transport, Economy, Environment, Recreation, Tourism, Crime and
Housing and what its residents aspire to happen in the future.
A Neighbourhood Plan sets out what the Parish would like to see in any
development taking place, for example:
• choose where new homes, shops and offices should be built
• have a say on what those new buildings should look like
Such a Plan would have to conform to Wiltshire Council’s Plan.
14
The Steering Group will consist of Parish Councillors and local residents.
Anyone who would like to join the Steering Group should contact the
Parish Clerk Geoff Turner by email: [email protected].
A copy of the Parish Plan can be found at http://www.calnewithout.org.
REVEREND ANN WRITES Dear All,
I do hope that by the time you read this that the weather has warmed up a
bit and that the sleet and snow are behind us!
Spring though should be upon us! I always wonder at Spring when the
bulbs come up, the grass starts to grow, the hedgehogs reappear, the lambs
appear (this year with plastic coats on!). There is suddenly an uplifting of
the spirit – everything looks and feels better!
And this year, despite the weather, will be the same – there is always
Spring after Winter. There is always hope.
As we enter the season of Easter we enter a time of renewal. It is a time
when we can take stock and remember all that is good. This Easter-time
I urge you to find time, time to look around, time to enjoy God’s creation in
all its forms.
The Winter comes so that the earth and the animals and all who work the
land can have a rest to build themselves up for the busy spring and
summer. For many of us though, it is the Spring when we feel the force of
renewal through the sun, the warmth, the freedom that the sunshine brings.
I urge you to lap up the sun, the beauty of the earth, and, as you dream or
gaze in wonder to remember that God is good, and that God is continually
creating and renewing the whole earth – including us – if we let him and
give him time!
With love
Ann
CROSSWORD We haven’t much room this month so we have left the crossword out, but
we would like to know if you have missed it. Let the Editor know so that
we can decide if it should be a regular feature!

A FAMOUS APRIL 1ST PRANK In 1991 the London Times announced that the Department of Transport
had finalised a plan to ease congestion on the M25, the circular highway
surrounding London. The capacity of the road would be doubled by
making the traffic on both carriageways travel in the same direction. On
Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays the traffic would travel clockwise;
while on Tuesdays and Thursdays it would travel anti-clockwise. The plan
would not operate on weekends. It was said that the scheme was almost
certain to meet with the cabinet's approval, despite voices of protest coming
from some quarters. One of the protestors included a spokesman for
Labour Transport who reportedly warned that "Many drivers already have
trouble telling their left from their right." Also, a resident of Swanley, Kent
was quoted as saying, "Villagers use the motorway to make shopping trips
to Orpington. On some days this will be a journey of two miles, and on
others a journey of 117 miles. The scheme is lunatic." Thankfully, the
scheme existed only in the minds of the writers at the Times.
CHILDREN’S SOCIETY BOXES At the Family Service on 21st April the boxes of donations collected during
the year will be offered to God for the work of the Children’s Society and
then sent off to them. Please bring the boxes to the service and place them
on the altar or leave them at The Vicarage before the 21st so that they can
be included.
I would also like to thank Mrs Barbara Parry for all she has done to
organise the collection over the years and wish her well in her retirement
from this task.
Consequently, I am looking for someone else to take on this role. If you
would like to take on the distribution of the boxes and the collection of the
same for sending to the Children’s Society then please let me know. Sadly,
if no-one is willing to organise the distribution and collection of the boxes
then there will be no collection this year.
Please let me know if you can help!
Many thanks!
Reverend Ann (01249 817926)

A V ILLAGE PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ
You lived in a village and you understand village life.
Help us to help our villages.
May Spring come in to our houses,
May the water of life spring up in our hearts,
And may action spring from our new life in you
So that Spring sowing may bring Autumn harvest.

THE PRAYER TREE
The Prayer Tree is an ancient and anonymous way of
sharing Prayer Concerns.
Please email, or telephone, your request and we will
attach a Prayer Leaf to our Tree for you. Alternatively,
you may go into church and hang a Prayer Leaf on to
the tree yourself or ask a friend to do it.
You do not need to give your name, only as much detail
as you wish on the situation you would like to be
prayed for.
We will offer your prayer to God in our Mid-Week Prayer Service, every
2nd Monday at 1.30pm. In February the dates are 11th and 25th March in
Christ Church, Derry Hill. All are welcome to join in this service.

THE DERRY HILL STORY a child of Studley and Stanley.
From the first mention of Studley in ancient deeds of 1175 (as
Stodleia) to the present day, this is a fascinating history of the local
area. Lovingly researched and re-written, (this is the third edition
from the 1979 original by Mrs P Gough), in 2011 by C J Baumber, this
is a must for anyone who lives here.
The book costs £5.00, with all proceeds going to Christ Church,
Derry Hill and copies are available from Mrs Barbara Barnard
Tel: 01249 814206, or from Christ Church or the Village Stores.
