EXTERNAL EXAMINATION:
The body is identified by ankle bands and toe tags and is thatof e.n unembalmed refrigerated adult male Caucasian who appearsaborit the reported age of 49 years- The body weighs 55 pounds,meas;ures 32 inches (pel Form 1) and appears well-nourished' Thegen€rral appearance of the skin is as diagrammed on Form 20.Focarl areas of superfici-al skin breakdown are noted to thepost:erior scalp, right upper extremity, penis and scrotum. None
of t:he sites show exudates or evidence of infecti-on. Wrist scarsare absent. Tattoos are present and identified as diagrammed on
Forrr 20. Rigor mortis has presumably been altered. Livor mortisis tr>osterior, dependent and nearly fixed. The head has shortbrorun hair. Frontal and vertex balding is present. A mustacheis 1>resent. Patchy facial stubble is noted. Examination of theeyeit reveal-s irides that appear to be blue in color and scleraetha': are congested with purpura and focal drying. The oronasalpasriages are unobstructed and the nasal- septum is intact. Upperand lower teeth are present. Dentures ale not present. The
ski:r of the neck is unremarkabLe and t.he neck i-s withoutabn,rrmality to rangie of mot.ion testing. There ale no palpablefra:tures of the chest. The abdomen appears mildly distendedbut without a Palpable fluid wave. The genitalia are those ofan adult male. The penis appears circumcised, scrotal and softtissue edema is present. EVIDENCE OF TRAUMATIC INJURY:
There are no fatal blunt force or penetrating traumatic externalor internal injuries Present.
CLOTHING:
The body was not clothed. and I did not see the clothing. No
clothing accompanied the decedent from the hospital.

The body cavities are entered through the standard coronalinc:-sion and the standard Y-shaped incision. No foreignmaterial is present in the mouth, upper airway and trachea '

The neck organs are removed en bLoc wlth the tongue. No l-esionsare present nor is trauma of the gingiva, lips or oral mucosa

RESP.TRATORY SYSTEM:
Scan: secretions and edema fluid are present in the lowerbron:hlaL passages. There is no apparent obstruction- The
mucosa is intact and mil-dly congested. The lungs areatel:ctatic and diffusely firm wit'h dependent congestion' The
left lung weighs 300 grams. The right lung weighs 425 grams '
The visceral pleurae are smooth and intact. Sectioning throughthe lung parenchyma reveals no focal lesions or masses ' The
pulmonary vasculature is without thromboembolism.
GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM :
The esophagus is intact throughout. The stomach is notdistended. It contains an estimated L0 cc of tan-pink fluid'The mucosa shows early postmortem changes and focal superficial-muccsal pinpoint erosions al the gastroduodenal junctlon' No
active bleeding is present. Tablets and capsules cannot be
discerned in the stomach. The external and in situ appearanceof the smal} intestine and colon are unlemarkable. The smaLlinte,stj-ne and colon are opened along the entire mesentericborcler revealing tan-to-tan-gleen small bowel contents, softgre€rn stool- in the colon and there are numerous coLondiverrticuli, most prominent at the distat portion' The appendixis ;tbsent. wa1l is thin and pliable. It contains liquid and sludge bilewith no cal-cuIi-. There is no obstruction or dilation of theextrehepatic ducts. The periportal lymph nodes are notenlar'ged.
URIN?TRY SYSTEM:
The l.eft kidney weighs 90 grams; the right kidney weighs80 gl:ams. The kidneys are normally situated and the capsulestrips easily revealing a surface that is markedly granular,scar::ed and pale. The corticomedullary demarcation is preservedand 1:he cortex appears attenuated. The pyramids are notrema::kable. There is increased peripelvic fat ' Both kidneyshave multlple simple cysts. The largest is in the left kidneymeasr:ring up to 1.8 cm in diameter. The urinary bladder iscont racted and contai-ns no urine.
GENI'IAL SYSTEM:
The crostate is withoutare in the scrotum and
enlargement or nodularity. Both testesare unremarkable and without trauma'
HEMOTYMPHATlC SYSTEM:
The spleen wei-ghs 70 grams and is of average slze. The capsuleis intact. Th; parenchyma is dark red. There is no increasedfollicular patteln. Lymph nodes throughout the body are smal-land inconspicuous except for a focus of sma]l matted lynph nodes

focally in the left occipital 1obe. Sectionlng through thebrain reveals no intraparenchymal hemorrhage or other focallesions. OPINION:
This 49 year old man died due to sequelae of alcoholintoxication.
Examination and histology findings are consistent with theprovided medical history. The nasopharyngeal swab is negativefor conunon respiratory viral pathogens. The lung culturesreveal no bacterial growth.
A urine toxicology screen performed during hospitalization was
negatlve. A blood atcohol level performed on 4-2-18 at 2l-30 was
reported as >300 mgldl and further quantification was notperfcrmed. Post mortem toxicology was not performed due toprol-cnged hospit.ali-zation and admission blood specj"mens were notavail able.
per review of the available medical records and the Los AngelesPolic:e Depart,ment Mental Eva1uat.lon Unit report (Incident number4848) the decedent reportedly made sulcidal ideatj-ons. There isa rep,orted hist.ory of depression and chronj-c alcohol- use withrec€rrt relapse.

On 04t}1,l?]018 at 1919 hours, Register Nurse Kalie reported this apparent suicid.e death to
Coroner Clerk K. Slone. It was reported that the decedent was taken to the hospital for alcohol
intcxication and was admitted onO410312018. The decedent reportedly went into respiratory
failure and became vent dependent. The decedent was pronounced at the hospital. The decedent
has a reported medical history of dwarfism and chronic alcoholism. lt was reported that the
dec;edent apparently called 9i t himself saying he wanted to die. lt was reported that the
dec;edent jdst kept iepeating it on his 911 call and in the emergency room. Wlren the decedent
arrived toihe hospitai, his alcohol leve! was reportedly above 300. The decedent reportedly came
int6 the hospital approximately one year ago for the same thing. There was no note found. The
decedent reportecity had prioisuicio-e idea[ions in the past. lt was unknown at the time of the call
which police depariment was handting this case. There was no other further information reported,
I received this case for investigation from Lieutenant B. Kim on O412112018-
Supervisor Forensic Attendant C. Garcia and Forensic Attendant A. Jaime transported the
dei:edent from the hospital to the Forensic Science Center on 0412112018 at2220 hours'
A criminal history search for the decedent showed no prior arrests on file.
This case was originally moded as a suicide and after review of the informant statements; the
mcde was changed to an accident versus suicide death.
Criminalists call out criteria was reviewed and was not met at the time of my investigation.
Location:Plerce of Injury: Residence: 8005 Teesdale Avenue, North Hollywood, CA, 91605.
Plerce of Death: Hospital: 15107 Vanowen Street, Van Nuys, CA' 91405.
lnformant/Witness StatemenG :
The medical record and the form 18 had the following information. The decedent was brought
from his residence into the hospital by ambulance on 04i0?2018. A urine toxicology test was
cornpleted at the hospital on 04ftV2018 showing an alcohol level of greater than_300.0 mgidl.
Despite life saving measures the decedent was pronounced on 0412112018 at 1127 hours by Dr.
Gsrdon. The decedent has a reported medical history of alcohol abuse and depression'
orlO4|21|2o18,|conductedate|ephoneinterviewwiththedecedent'sfatherfandhe stated the following information. The decedent was not married and did not have any adult
chrldren. The decedent was not known to use any illicit drugs. The decedent did have a history of
alc;ohol abuse and had reportedly completed time at a treatment center approximately one year
ago. The decedent had no known medical history. The decedent was taking prescription
m-r:dication but the family did not know what they were being prescribed for. The decedent did
have a primary doctor (Dr. Kroop). The decedent had a medical history of depression but was
rellortedly not seeking any medical treatment. The decedent had no known prior suicide attempts
or ideations.

Body Examination:
The decedent is a 4$year-otd mde Caucasian adult dwarf with blue eyes and brown hair- He

Utn apparent natural teeth. There was a hospital identification band
seen to the decedent's left arm. There was a red band seen to the decedent's left arm. A hospital
idertification tag was seen to the decedent's right arm. A bandage was seen to the decedent's
i"tt 1ooi, right fo-ot, left arm, right thigh, back of the head, and buttocks. An intravenous line was
.""'i.o*ing from the decedJnt's right thigh. There were no other medical appliances seen.
Abrasions were seen to the decedeifs genitals, right hand, mouth, tongue, and back of his head'
Furfrfu discoloration *a. r""n to the dededent's aims. There was no other obvious evidence of
trauma seen or palpated. A mole was seen to the decedent's right chest. Tattoos were seen to
the lecedent's arms, left chest, right leg, and back. A scar was seen to the decedent's right
abd.rmen. There were no deformities seen'
ldentification:The decedent was positively identified by his driver's license issued by the California Department
of lvtotor Vehicles as Verne Jay Troyer, date of birth 01/01/1969.
