Design Project Timeline CVE5103 – Design Workshop

Project 2 – Multi-Storey Building Project SEMESTER 2 Start Date: 12th February 2020 End Date: 22nd May 2020

Task 1 Structural Optimisation Dr Marc Bonello Dr Jeanette Abela Perit John Valentino Dr Adrian Mifsud

The following tasks involve:

Week 1 Commencing: 12th February 2020

You are to carry out a structural optimisation exercise on the building core in terms of plan size and wall thicknesses. Wherever appropriate, you may consider structural solutions using different types of structural materials.

Informal Review – Task 1 21st February 2020

You will prepare structural calculations and sketches to demonstrate the structural optimisation of the building core. You are not required to produce a formal

submission, but you are to bring sufficient material to highlight your thought process.

Task 2 Detailed Structural

Analysis and Design

Dr Marc Bonello Dr Jeanette Abela Perit John Valentino Dr Adrian Mifsud

Week 2 – Week 6 Commencing: 28th February 2020

Having optimised your building core, you are now to analyse and design:

All structural beam types.

All structural slab types.

All structural column types.

All structural wall types.

All structural foundation types.

You are then to produce:

Bar bending schedules for reinforced concrete structural members.

Materials lists for structural steelwork members.

Detailed drawings of reinforced concrete structural member connections.

Detailed drawings of structural steelwork member connections.

Detailed drawings of building construction details.

Informal Review‐ Task 2 27th March 2020

This is a formal review in which you will be required to show the design work you have carried out, and to explain the detailed structural and building construction details in your building project. You are also to highlight issues that you feel might affect the project

management of your building project. You will be allotted 20 (twenty) minutes to present your design concept. You will be stopped if you exceed the time limit allotted for your presentation. A further 10 (ten) minutes will be allotted for questions.

Task 3 Programming Dr Joseph H.Spiteri

Week 7 Commencing: 27th March 2020

(a) Preparing a network diagram and a Gantt Chart, and computing the critical path for the construction of the building.

(b) Drawing up a work break-down structure for the erection of the building system.

Task 4 Risk Analysis Dr Rebecca Dalli Gonzi

Week 8 – Week 9 Commencing: 3rd April 2020

(c) Identification of risk factors to the project budgetary (cost) and schedule (time) parameters.

(d) Building a risk analysis framework.

(e) Compiling information regarding the probability of the occurrence of the risk factor and its potential likely impact (PIG).

Task 5 Construction Management Plan (CMP)

Perit Ivan Bondin

Week 10 – Week 11 Commencing: 17th April 2020

(f) This task will be based on the designated site over which the building is to be erected. It involves the drawing up of a Construction Management Plan (CMP) featuring (site specific) drawings to coincide with various stages of the project (mobilisation, excavations and so on). For this purpose, you are to use the site in Gżira (shown in the attached site plan), within which to locate the multi-storey building that you proposed in Semester 1 (CVE5103A-1).
