PREFACE
Today, the human society is facing severe environmental problems like climate change, greenhouse
effect, energy crisis, depletion of natural resources, biodiversity loss, pollution of air, water, soil, etc. The
ever increasing population and changing life styles are increasing the severity of the environmental
problems. The time has come to protect the natural environment through precise efforts. Sustainable
development through higher education provides a pivotal role in nations building. Sustainable
development remains barely a significant social, economic or environmental challenge for our country.
Though teaching and learning must begin to reflect environmental issues, there is an emerging consensus
that institutions must also model sustainable practices. Such education contributes strongly to sustainable
development by training and expanding young minds in researching solutions to the environmental
challenges. After graduation and post graduation, the students become leaders of tomorrow and get
dispersed from the world of higher education into their specific career. In doing so, they take with them
the green practices and approaches they were involved with at their institution
The Green audit Year-2019 of our campus was carried out to find out areas of strengths and weaknesses
in environmental management within campus. Findings of the Green Audit Report- 2019 showed that the
institution could conserve paper, electricity and water easily, if better environmental awareness was
created. Canopy of trees, number of garden and greenery in campus beautify the campus and
automatically neutralize carbon footprint. The report made a number of recommendations, including
recycle of water, tree plantation, segregation of waste at the site which must be added in the Green Policy
by college. Now College recognizes the need to function all year round in a manner which minimizes its
harmful environmental impact by creating a Green policy. I know that sharing of this report widely
generate greater awareness with in campus community.

Executive Summary
The rapid urbanization and economic development at local, regional and global level has led to several
environmental and ecological crises. On this background it becomes essential to adopt the system of the
Green Campus for the institute which will lead for sustainable development. D.Y Patil Technical Campus
Ambi, Sr. No. 124 & 126, A/p Ambi, MIDC Road, Tal Maval, Talegaon Dabhade, Pune, Maharashtra is
deeply concerned and unconditionally believes that there is an urgent need to address these fundamental
problems and reverse the trends. The purpose of the audit is to ensure that the practices followed in the
campus are in accordance with the Green Policy adopted by the institution. The methodology included:
preparation and filling up of questionnaire, physical inspection of the campus, observation and review of
the documentation, interviewing key persons and data analysis, measurements and recommendations. It
works on the several facets of ‘Green Campus’ including Water Conservation, Tree Plantation, Waste
Management, Paperless Work, Alternative Energy and Mapping of Biodiversity. With this in mind, the
specific objectives of the audit was to evaluate the adequacy of the management control framework of
environment sustainability as well as the degree to which the Departments are in compliance with the
applicable regulations, policies and standards. It can make a tremendous impact on student health and
learning college operational costs and the environment. The criteria, methods and recommendations used
in the audit were based on the identified risks.
Introduction
Green Audit can be defined as systematic identification, quantification, recording, reporting and analysis
of components of environmental diversity. The ‘Green Audit’ aims to analyse environmental practices
within and outside the college campus, which will have an impact on the eco-friendly ambience. It was
initiated with the motive of inspecting the work conducted within the organizations whose exercises can
cause risk to the health of inhabitants and the environment. Through Green Audit, one gets a direction as
how to improve the condition of environment and there are various factors that have determined the
growth of carrying out Green Audit.
The D. Y. Patil Technical Campus, Ambi, Pune was established in the year 2006 as a part of D. Y. Patil
Group. The founder President ,Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil, Governor of Bihar, West Bengal and Tripura,
and President Dr. Vijay. D. Patil, a doyen in the educational field in India, was instrumental in
establishing the. Vision to provide professional education, primarily to the rural youth and
underprivileged students so as to give them an opportunity to realize their dreams of career in various
professional fields.

D.Y Patil Technical Campus, Ambi, Pune is approved by All India Council for Technical Education
(AICTE) New Delhi, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) and the Government of Maharashtra. All
its courses are affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University. The D.Y Patil Technical Campus is fully
equipped with modern infrastructure facilities such as spacious lecture halls with modern audio-visual
aids, fully equipped laboratories, library, reading rooms, seminar hall, computer center & state of art
workshop facility. It has qualified and experienced faculty that makes the backbone of the Institute.
Alongside, emphasis is given on conduction of Workshops/Seminars, Conferences, Professional Training
Programs, Technical Events, Industry visits and also to motivate students to participate in all India
competitions such as SAE Mini Baja,. To familiarize our students with the best industrial practices and
give them exposure to practical aspects of engineering education, guest lecture by eminent Industry
Expert has been the common feature of the Institute. To compete at Global Level, the students get the

D.Y Patil Technical Campus, is producing awareness about the environment consciousness, for which
institute take number of steps by organizing different events of green practices. This institute campus runs
various activities with the aim to percolate the knowledge along with practical dimension among the
society. College also tries to give solution for different burning issues related to environment, its
awareness as well as its protection. As nowadays academic colleges are becoming more sensitive to
environmental factors more concepts are being introduced to make them ecofriendly. To preserve the
environment within the campus, various viewpoints are applied by the institute to solve their
environmental problems such as promotion of the energy savings, energy conservation, water reduction,
water environment, Solid waste management, air quality, noise pollution, minimizing use of Plastic, etc.
D.Y. Patil Technical Campus, Ambi bagged the prestigious Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vanshree
Awards 2016 instituted by the Conservation of Forest ,Government of Maharashtra .

Green audit‟ is one of such concepts or principles introduced to make the educational institute
environmentally sustainable."Green audit is a tool to assess general practices implemented by
organization in term of its impact on environment". Green audit also throws a light on adverse
practices which are responsible for degradation of environment. It shows strength and weakness of
organization towards conservation of environment. It is helpful to recognize the need to function
around the year in a manner to minimize its harmful environmental impact. It means Green Audit is
the base line survey to decide the Green policy.
Objectives of the Study
The main objective of the green audit is to promote the Environment Management and Conservation
in the College Campus. The purpose of the audit is to identify, quantify, describe and prioritize
framework of Environment Sustainability in compliance with the applicable regulations, policies and
standards.
The main objectives of carrying out Green Audit are:

To introduce and make aware to students about real concerns to environment and its
sustainability
To secure the environment and cut down the threats posed to human health by analysing the
pattern and extent of resource use of the campus.
To establish a baseline data to assess future sustainability by avoiding the interruptions in
environment that are more difficult to handle and their corrections requiring high cost.
To bring out a status report on environmental compliance.
Methodology: In order to perform green audit, the methodology included different tools such as
preparation of questionnaire, physical inspection of the campus, observation and review of the
documentation, interviewing key persons and data analysis, measurements and recommendations.
The study covered the following areas to summarise the present status of environment
management in the campus:
Water management
Energy Conservation
Waste management
E-waste management
Green area management
Observations and Recommendations
Water Use: This indicator addresses water consumption, water sources, irrigation, storm water,
appliances and fixtures. A water audit is an on-site survey and assessment to determine the water use
and hence improving the efficiency of its use.
Observations
Water is lifted from the river with 10 HP pump, stored different storage tank , total storage
capacity of 18.5 lakh liters water available in campus and for drinking purpose , water is treated
with RO plant of capacity 5000 Liters/ Hr and then supplied to the water coolers. Water is used for
drinking purpose, cleaning, toilets, construction works and gardening. During the survey, no loss of
water is observed, neither by any leakages, nor by over flow of water from overhead tanks. The data
collected from all the departments is examined and verified. On an average the total use of water in
the college is 310050 L/day for bathing, cleaning & drinking purpose , however around 50000 L/day
for gardening purposes

The campus has central sewage treatment plant (STP) with drainage system as per gravitation
direction and located opposite to main building of college. The waste treated with a capacity of
7.0 lakh litre per day is re-cycled and used for gardening purpose and construction work.

Hostel ,Washing Construction works ,Office uses

Recommendations:
College campus plants and Gardens should be watered by using drip/sprinkler irrigation system to
minimise water use. Rain water harvesting units needs to be installed for recharging ground water
level . Ensure that all cleaning products used by college staff have a minimal detrimental impact on
the environment, i.e. they are biodegradable and non-toxic, even where this exceeds the Control of
Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
Energy Use and Conservation
This indicator addresses energy consumption, energy sources, energy monitoring, lighting,
appliance, natural gas and vehicles. Energy use is clearly an important aspect of campus
sustainability and thus requires no explanation for its inclusion in the assessment.
Observations
Energy source utilized by the campus is electricity & solar energy. Total average energy
consumption is determined as 60351 KWH/month. The entire campus including common facility
centre are equipped with LED lamps, CFL lamps and tube lights. Solar panels also used for campus
lighting extended to hot water facility to hostels adding its components to conservation of energy.

Lighting& Other loads
Day light is utilized at maximum of the places, which is a good thing.
The college premises is having mainly 40W / 36W Fluorescent Tube Lights. LEDs are being installed at few locations. The

Recommendations
In campus premises electricity should be shut down whenever not in use to prevent power loss.
Support renewable and carbon-neutral electricity options on any energy purchasing consortium, with
the aim of supplying all college properties with electricity that can be attributed to renewable and
carbon-neutral sources. It is preferable to purchase electricity from a company that invests in new
sources of renewable and carbon-neutral electricity. Installation of LED lamps instead of CFL and
replacing the old tube lights with the new LED tubes. 5–star rated Air Conditioners, Fans and CFLs
should be used. Cleaning of tube-lights/bulbs to be done periodically, to remove dust over it.
Waste Generation
This indicator addresses waste production and disposal of different wastes like paper, food, plastic,
biodegradable, construction, glass, dust etc. and recycling. Furthermore, solid waste often includes
wasted material resources that could otherwise be channelled into better service through recycling,
repair, and reuse. Solid waste generation and management is a burning issue. Unscientific handling of
solid waste can create threats to everyone. The survey focused on volume, type and current
management practice of solid waste generated in the campus.
Observations
Waste generation from tree droppings and lawn management is a major source of solid waste
generated in the campus. The waste is segregated at source by providing separate dustbins for Bio-
degradable and non biodegradable waste. Single sided used papers reused for writing and printing in
all departments and recently both side printing is carried out as per requirements. The waste generated
by newspapers 1500 kg/year, magazine 1000 kg/year and of cartons is 700 kg/year. Very less plastic
waste (182 Kg/year) is generated by campus. Kitchen / canteen waste generates 90 kg/day & 5kg/day
biodegradable and biodegradable respectively. Metal waste and wooden waste is stored and given to
authorized scrap agents for further processing. The solid waste is collected by the municipal
corporation and disposed by their methods. The generated solid waste is managed by a pit in the
campus having size 25 x 25 x 10 feet. The dry plants leaves , plants debris and stalks have been
collected daily by sweeper and then subjected into pits , allowed to composed and utilized by agri
department as a fertilizer.

Recommendations
Reduce the absolute amount of waste that is produced from college staff offices. Make full use of all
recycling facilities provided by government authority and private suppliers, including glass, cans,
white, coloured and brown paper, plastic bottles, batteries, print cartridges, cardboard and furniture.
Provide sufficient, accessible and well-publicized collection points for recyclable waste, with
responsibility for recycling clearly allocated.
Important and confidential papers after their validity to be sent for pulping
Vermicomposting should be adopted on at least 200-400 sq. ft. of land.
E-Waste Generation
E-waste can be described as consumer and business electronic equipment that is near or at the end of
its useful life. This makes up about 5% of all municipal solid waste worldwide but is much more
hazardous than other waste because electronic components contain cadmium, lead, mercury, and
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that can damage human health and the environment.

Observations
E-waste generated in the campus is very less in quantity. Administration conducts the awareness
programmes regarding E-waste Management with the help of various departments. The E-waste and
defective item from computer laboratory is being stored properly. The institution has decided to
contact approved E-waste management and disposal facility in order to dispose E-waste in scientific
manner.
Recommendations
Recycle or safely dispose of white goods, computers and electrical appliances.
Use reusable resources and containers and avoid unnecessary packaging where possible
Always purchase recycled resources where these are both suitable and available.
Green Area
This includes the plants, greenery and sustainability of the campus to ensure that the buildings
conform to green standards. This also helps in ensuring that the Environmental Policy is enacted,
enforced and reviewed using various environmental awareness programmes.

Observations
Campus is located in the vicinity of many trees (species) to maintain the bio-diversity. Open
cultivation area in the campus is around 0.5 to 1.0 acre , campus also contains polyhouse area 560 sq
meter and shednet area around 560 sq meter . Various tree plantation programs are being organized at
college campus and surrounding area through academic and cultural activities. This program helps in
encouraging eco-friendly environment which provides pure oxygen within the institute and awareness
among other populations. At present, campus includes various types of indigenous species of
ornamental and medicinal wild plant species and list are provided in Table 1.0. Every year around
800 new plantation have been conducted during academic activities by students of the college.

Recommendations
Review periodically the list of trees planted in the garden, allot numbers to the trees and keep
records.
Few plants in the campus , scientific name is missing, scientific names to those trees need to be
updated.
Promote environmental awareness as a part of course work in various curricular areas,
independent research projects, and community service.
Create awareness of environmental sustainability and take actions to ensure environmental
sustainability.
Establish a College Environmental Committee that will hold responsibility for the enactment,
enforcement and review of the Environmental Policy.

The Environmental Committee shall be the source of advice and guidance to staff and students on
how to implement this Policy.
Ensure that an audit is conducted annually and action is taken on the basis of audit report,
recommendation and findings.
Celebrate every year 5th June as ‘Environment Day’ and plant trees on this day to make the
campus more Green.

Air Quality Monitoring:
Good outdoor air quality is fundamental for well-being. On average, a person inhales about
14,000 litres of air every day, and the presence of contaminants in this air can adversely affect
people’s health. People with pre-existing respiratory and heart conditions, diabetes, the young,
and older people are particularly vulnerable. Recent studies have shown poor air quality can also
adversely affect the natural environment. Ecological damage may occur when air pollutants come
into direct contact with vegetation or when animals inhale them. Pollutants can also settle out of
the air onto land and water bodies. From the soil, they can wash into waterways, or be taken up
by plants and animals. Poor air quality can also affect our climate: some pollutants have a
warming effect while others contribute to cooling. These effects of poor air quality on human
health and the environment can, in turn, have negative economic impacts. We incur major costs,
for example, for hospitalisation and medical treatment, premature deaths, and lost work days.
Damage to soils, vegetation, and waterways may reduce the productivity of our agriculture and
forestry industries. Since air quality of college campus have been monitored as per the National
Ambient Air Quality, recommended by pollution control board. The air quality of the college
campus was found satisfactory and all the pollutants are below the range suggested by pollution
control board. The detail test certificate of air quality monitoring , soil and water attached in the
annexure .
Conclusions
Considering the fact that the institution is predominantly an education temple, there is significant
environmental research both by faculty and students. The environmental awareness initiatives are
substantial. The installation of solar panels and system are noteworthy. Besides, environmental
awareness programmes initiated by the administration shows how the campus is going green. Few
recommendations are added to curb the menace of waste management using eco-friendly and
scientific techniques. This may lead to the prosperous future in context of Green Campus & thus
sustainable environment and community development. As part of green audit of campus, we

carried out the environmental monitoring of campus including ambient air monitoring, water
quality index, Illumination and Ventilation of different departments and the class room. It was
observed that ambient air quality as NAAQS, water quality as per IS 10500, Illumination ,
Ventilation is adequate.
