Hello Hippos!

Seeing as this is the first newsletter we have been able to produce, I would just like to say what an honor it has been to serve you all for these past two months!

The days have come and gone so fast! I cannot believe how quickly time passes when you are always busy! In the past two months, many of you have shown me what it truly is to be in Key Club. I appreciate everything and every single one of you. I would just like to say how much of a pleasure I know it will be to serve you all for the next eleven months. I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish together!

In other news, The Bishop’s School has recently

reached the final stages of their charter, so we should be seeing a new club in Division 21 very soon. Congrat-ulations, Bishop! The DCON 2014 theme has also re-cently been announced as you may have seen in the design application that was sent out (I hope to see many submissions!). It will be “Your Golden Ticket”. I hope I see many of you earn your GOLDEN tickets this year through your service and leadership! I know we will all do well.

We will certainly be having a GOLDEN year!

In service,

Nicklas Lee

MIRACLE MILE OF QUARTERS PAST EVENTS

SPRINGFEST This month was a big month for Patrick

Henry Key Club. All because of SpringFest! Every

year during the month of May, the Kiwanis Club

of the Grantville-Allied Gardens community hosts

a festival and a mini parade in the neighborhood

park. Key Club, accompanied by Builders Club,

marched together in the parade with GAG Kiwa-

nis and greeted everyone good morning! It was

amazing to be recognized by the community as

an organization striving to better the community

itself. Seeing the bright faces of everyone as we

walked passed was a gratifying experience.

Within the festival itself, our club was

granted a game booth in which some percentage

of the proceeds go directly back to us! The game

was ring toss; although many stepped up to the

plate, only few prevailed and left triumphantly

with their stuffed animal prize. Besides the game

booth, members were also given the opportunity

to assist Kiwanians at their membership booth!

While parents were busy talking to the Kiwani-

ans, key clubbers were given the task to distract

the children. This was done through the planting

of sunflowers seeds! Members would help the

kids create their mini sunflower plant and then

aid them in coloring their instructional page on

how to keep the sunflower growing! From

SpringFest alone, we volunteered over sixty

hours of service!

Overall, it was a fun event that allowed us

to serve our community, spend time together,

and support our Kiwanis club as a thank you for

their help.

QUARTERS By Yvonne Luu

What happens when you find the Kiwanis

family at Rady Children’s Hospital with a

bunch of quarters? You get the Miracle

Mile of Quarters event! Miracle Mile of

Quarters is an annual fundraiser put on by

Kiwanis to benefit Rady Children’s Hospi-

tal and to help kids get the care they

need, and took place on May 4th this year.

Quarters had been collected throughout

the year and were used for the fun two

hour-long Quarter Art Competition on the

day of MMQ. In the Quarter Art Competi-

tion, teams worked together to construct

a 3D sculpture with the quarters around

the Inspiration Fountain located in front of

Rady Children’s Hospital. Ultimately, the

quarters were donated to the hospital and

select teams were dubbed winners and

given plaques for their unique designs.

Scripps Ranch Key Club aimed to

create a child-friendly design. Eventually,

we came up with a product surrounding

the character Mr. Potato Head from the

movie franchise Toy Story with the cap-

tion, “Looking 4 a Friend”. Though SRHS

Key Club may not have won the competi-

tion, it can be certainly agreed that every-

one had a great time working together to

create some fun quarter art and bonding

with friends from other clubs, divisions,

Circle K, etc. 7 Photos courtesy of John

SOUPLANTATION FUNDRAISER

The night of May 7, 2013, Scripps Ranch Key

Club hosted a fundraiser at Souplantation in Mira

Mesa aim to raise money for the club. Friends and

family of Key Clubbers gather together in support

of this club and eat to their hearts desire. What's

better than being able to both fundraise and eat

delicious food? Scripps Ranch Key Club is in need

to bring is some profit and hosting this fundraiser

has highly benefitted this club. Those who went

out and supported were able to chat, bond, and

relax with everyone by enjoying a meal together.

There will definitely be more fundraisers to come

to support Scripps Ranch Key Club.

MIRAMAR RANCH SPAGHETTI FEED

On May 23, 2013, the Scripps Ranch Key Club teamed up with the leaders of the

Scripps-Mira Mesa Kiwanis and attended the Miramar Ranch Spaghetti Feed to help

serve dinner to the families there during Open House. They served catered spaghetti

from Filippi’s and made garlic bread at the event. The members not only served the

meals, but they also worked to help the event run smoothly thorough using problem

solving skills and a positive attitude. Midway through the event, the plates, cups, and

forks were all used up, and the Key Club members had to find alternatives to use until

the supplies could be replenished. Although some parents were upset at the lack of

materials, the Key Clubbers kept everything running and used alternative methods to

serve the meal and keep the customers pleased.

Overall, the guests had a very enjoyable experience as they ate the delicious

meal and walked around the art gallery. Many families enjoyed the meal so much that

they came back for seconds and thirds, and the event raised a lot of funds. This was a

rewarding experience for all of the SRHS Key Clubbers because they were not only

serving their community, but also having fun! The volunteers who attended also had

the chance to meet their Key Club President from four years ago, which was an added

bonus, and take home some of the delicious leftovers. Although the event was fairly

small, with the help of SRHS Key Club members, it made a large impact on the

community and helped many individuals receive a tasty meal!

LIVER WALK On May 11, 2013, Scripps Ranch’s Key Club worked alongside with other sur-

rounding high school Key Clubs at the Liver Life Walk. The Liver Life walk took place at

the San Diego Zoo. Currently in the United States, we are battling more than 100 dif-

ferent types of liver diseases. This event raised money and awareness to finding treat-

ments and cures that will lead to a world free of liver disease in the United States. All

proceeds are specifically for funding medical research, patient support services, and ad-

vocacy. Participants brought awareness and financial support to individuals that cur-

rently battle against the different types of liver disease.

Scripps Ranch Key Clubbers helped guide walkers and passed out water to them.

The Liver Life Walk was a great experience to support the cause to beat all types of liv-

er illnesses. It was a fun experience where volunteers could help out the community

while being able to socialize with friends. We had a fun time at this event and hope we

can work with the American Liver Foundation in the near future.

On Saturday May 18th, Serra Key Clubbers vol-

unteered at the local Patriot’s Day Parade and

Festival hosted by the Tierrasanta Kiwanis. The

morning parade was a car parade on the main

street of the local neighborhood, and Serra Key

Club was even given their own car during the

morning parade! A crowd of hundreds of local

Tierrasanta residents were shown the true spir-

it of Key Club with the spirited officers in the

car. Along with this, many hard-working volunteers contributed to the suc-

cess of the morning event through redirecting traffic as well as setting up

traffic cones.

The festival during the nighttime was a huge fundraising event for the club,

as we had hosted a cake walk and two game booths. Many children and

adults participated in the activities, and our club had fundraised over 600 dol-

lars from the festival alone! The festival was a huge success, and it would not

have been as successful without the efforts of the amazing members of the

club!

ELIMINATE PROJECT

What is MNT?

In 28 countries around the world, maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT)

can quickly turn the joy of childbirth into tragedy. MNT kills one baby eve-

ry nine minutes. Its effects are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer re-

peated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch.

There is little hope of survival. And tetanus kills mothers too.

Why focus on this issue?

It is unacceptable that innocent newborns and their mothers suffer and

die from MNT when it can be prevented so easily. This is also an amazing

opportunity to reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with

lifesaving health care. Developing delivery systems for MNT vaccines will

blaze a trail to provide additional desperately needed services to these

marginalized families.

What is the Eliminate partnership?

Hand in hand, Kiwanis and UNICEF will eliminate MNT and change the

world. Kiwanis' commitment, vision and strength in reaching communities

and leaders will help wipe out this cruel, centuries-old disease and pave

the way for other interventions. UNICEF has staff working in the most iso-

lated corners of the globe and an unbeatable supply chain.

Can MNT be stopped?

Yes! MNT is highly preventable. Just three doses of a 60-cent immuniza-

tion protect mothers, who then pass on the immunity to their future ba-

bies. Together, Kiwanis and UNICEF can stop this disease.

Hey, Hippos! TECH EDITOR’S CORNER

Yo, Hippos!

I go by the name of Estella Hoang of D21. I go to Mira Mesa High School and

have served as a Historian just last year. I wanted to expand my Key Club spir-

it, thus becoming your divisional Tech editor! Some quick facts about me is that

I like to doodle, play games and cosplay. So don’t freak out if you see me in

costume at any time, haha. Feel free to add me at any time or chat with me.

I’d like to get to know you more, even if I’m socially awkward in the beginning.

If you really get to know me, I will get comfortable around you and will tend to

act a little crazy.

The school year’s almost coming to a close, but don’t procrastinate just yet! I

wish all you Hippos good luck on your finals and finish the year strong. Even if

school’ will be out soon, service will not rest, even with summer vacation, We

will always be hungry for service, since we are hippos.

So, here’s my question to you guys...What will you miss about

school when you go off to summer vacation? Send me your an-

swers to my Facebook or on my email: [email protected] by June 15.

Your answers will be published in the next newslet-

ter! Thanks for reading~ I’ll see you all next month!

Stay frosty,

Estella Hoang
