D&A 11.4 TALENT 4 ARTDoor het organiseren van de 3-maandelijkse exposities

biedt Dutch Design Hotel Artemis een platform

aan jonge Nederlandse kunstenaars en designers.

Vanwege het internationaal karakter en locatie van

dit hotel in Amsterdam biedt het letterlijk en figuurlijk

deze beginnende kunstenaars de ruimte om hun werk

tentoon te stellen aan een publiek waar zij, zeker aan

het begin van hun carrière, niet snel toegang tot hebben.

Tijdens deze nieuwe D&A expositie Talent4Art, opgezet

in samenwerking met Talent Voor Kunst, worden

kunstwerken van net afgestudeerde kunstenaars

en designers tentoongesteld. De verschillende

vaardigheden, waaronder fotografie, beeldhouwen en

schilderen, laten de unieke visies en talenten zien van

deze opkomende kunstenaars en designers.

TALENT VOOR KUNST Talent Voor Kunst staat voor innovatieve, betaalbare en

kwalitatief hoogwaardige kunst van jonge, talentvolle

kunstenaars. Talent Voor Kunst is de spil tussen

beginnende professionele kunstenaars en kunstzinnig

Nederland. Wij stimuleren de young professionals

die nog studerend of recent afgestudeerd zijn aan de

kunstacademie om uiting te geven aan hun creativiteit

en de stap te maken naar het ondernemerschap.

Bovendien willen we particulieren en bedrijven kennis

laten maken met betaalbare kunst van juist hoge

kwaliteit en originaliteit.

Talent Voor Kunst biedt een online galerie waarin

particulieren en bedrijven via een zoeksysteem snel

kunnen zoeken naar foto’s, schilderijen en sculpturen.

De kunstwerken zijn gemakkelijk en veilig aan te

schaffen ter verfraaiing van het (bedrijfs)interieur.

Voor bedrijven is er ook de mogelijkheid om kunst te

huren. Huyen Phan en Indra Vermeulen zetten zich als

eigenaars van Talent Voor Kunst in om op verschillende

publieke gelegenheden in geheel Nederland exposities

te verzorgen ofwel in tijdelijke ofwel in structurele

vorm, zodat de kunst van de beginnende kunstenaars

zoveel mogelijk gezien wordt. Daarnaast wordt kunst

gedeeld door het verzorgen van workshops in fotografie,

schilderen en graffiti. Talent Voor Kunst staat dus voor

het zien, beleven en delen van kunst.

ARTISTIC FOOD&DRINK DESIGNRESTAURANT BAR DE STIJL Kunst is te vinden in musea en galerieën, maar kom je

in het dagelijks leven ook veel tegen zoals bijvoorbeeld

in streetart. Zo heeft de kunst ook zijn weg gevonden in

de bereiding van eten en drinken, in de vorm van food

en drink design.

Bij het bedenken van het D&A food en drink design

voor de expositie Talent4Art heeft ons keuken en

restaurant team zich laten inspireren door verschillende

kunststijlen en stromingen, zoals de abstracte kunst

van Picasso of Mondriaan en het Kubisme. Zij tonen u dit

keer hun ‘talent for Art’ in de kunstzinnige vormgeving

en presentatie van eten en drinken.

D&A 11.4 TALENT 4 ARTBy organizing design and art exhibitions every three

months, Dutch Design Hotel Artemis offers young

Dutch artists and designers a platform to showcase

their work. Located in Amsterdam, the hotel

predominantly welcomes international guests and

visitors and therefore offers the artists and designers

the opportunity to showcase their work to an audience

to which they, especially at the beginning of their career,

would normally not have access to.

During this new D&A exhibition ‘Talent4Art’, organized in

cooperation with Talent For Art, the artwork of recently

graduated artists and designers will be displayed. With

a wide range of techniques, among which photography,

sculptures and painting, the unique perspectives and

talents of these upcoming artists and designers are

shown.

TALENT FOR ARTTalent For Art stands for innovative, affordable and

high-quality art of young, talented artists. Talent For

Art is the linking pin between novice professional

artists and artistic Netherlands. We encourage the

young professionals who are still enrolled or recently

graduated at the Academy of Arts to express their

creativity and to become an entrepreneur. In addition,

we want to offer art which is affordable, of high quality

and originality to individuals and companies.

Talent For Art offers an online gallery. Individuals and

companies can search quickly through a search system

for photographs, paintings and sculptures. The works of

art are easy and secure to buy to decorate the interior

of houses and companies. For companies it is also

possible to rent art. Huyen Phan and Indra Vermeulen

are the founders and owners of the company. They strive

to realize temporary and structural exhibitions in public

places in the Netherlands. In this way the art of the

novice artists is seen as much as possible. In addition,

art is shared by providing workshops in photography,

painting and graffiti. Talent for art is thus for seeing,

experiencing and sharing art.

ARTISTIC FOOD&DRINK DESIGNRESTAURANT BAR DE STIJL Art can be found in museums and galleries, but also in

our daily lives for example in the form of streetart. Art

has also found its way in the preparation of food and

drinks, in the form of food and drink design.

For the creation of D&A food and drink design for the

exhibition Talent4Art, our kitchen and restaurant team

was inspired by different styles of art and artmovements,

such as abstract art by Picasso and Mondriaan and

Cubism. This time they will show you their ‘talent for

Art’ in the artistic design and presentation of food and

drinks.

FREAKSHOWNELLIE DE BOER

NL Nellie de Boer is geboren in 1986 te Leeuwarden. Zij is

opgeleid aan Academie Minerva, Groningen (2005-2011)

met specialisaties in tekenen en schilderen. Nellie is

momenteel zelfstandig werkzaam in Leeuwarden.

Freakshow ‘Voorbij het veilige punt van een duidelijke tekening gaan

tot een overdaad van lijnen. Hoe zien dingen eruit als ze

vervallen, als ze worden verteerd? Er ontstaan breuken,

rimpels, sporen van kleine levensvormen en uiteindelijk

gaat het object weer op in zijn omgeving, keert terug

naar de chaos om materiaal te vormen voor een nieuwe

vaste vorm. Mijn werk is een momentopname van dit

proces.’

ENGNellie de Boer was born in 1986 in Leeuwarden. She

graduated at Academie Minerva, school of fine arts,

Groningen (2005-2011), with specialties in drawing

and painting. Nellie is currently self-employed in

Leeuwarden.

Freakshow ‘Going past the safe point of a clear image to an overflow

of lines. A horrified curiosity: what does decay look like?

Cracks appear, wrinkles, traces of smaller life forms,

eventually the object dissolves back into its environment,

returns to chaos to become the material for a new solid

shape. My work is a snapshot of this process.’

NL Na zijn technische opleiding als productontwerper wilde

Bram zijn horizon verbreden en meldde zich aan bij de

Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Deze opleiding heeft hij in

2010 afgerond aan de afdeling Fine Arts.

Op dit moment is zijn doel als kunstenaar om een

publiek te vinden om zijn autonome kunst mee te delen.

Zijn talent is om ergens goed naar te kijken, zich er

volledig mee in te leven en door te tekenen dit vast

te leggen. ‘Ik laat me tijdens het tekenen sturen door

de inleving, dit bepaalt onder andere de vorm en de

lijnvoering. Tekenen is binnen mijn capaciteiten op dit

moment de meest omvattende manier van vastleggen.’

Sprankels‘Ik ga ergens heen en vergeet vervolgens alle conventies.

Hierdoor zie ik alles om me heen alsof ik het voor het

eerst zie. De dingen die me dan opvallen, vaak dingen

die voor ons heel gewoon en oninteressant zijn, blijken

dan eigenschappen te bezitten die heel bijzonder zijn

maar waar we niet meer zo op letten. Dit noem ik de

verborgen ‘Sprankels’ van dingen, die je kunt zien door

er opnieuw, op een kinderlijke, onbevangen manier naar

te kijken.’

Bram gebruikt als onderwerp voor zijn tekeningen

dingen die zijn blik trekken als hij ergens heen gaat om

inspiratie op te doen. Het zijn altijd de ‘Sprankels’ die

zijn blik trekken. Zijn enige doel tijdens het tekenen is

het vastleggen hiervan. Dit vind je terug in zijn tekenstijl.

ENGAfter his technical education as a product designer,

Bram wanted to widen his horizon and enrolled at the

Gerrit Rietveld Academy. He completed this study in

2010 at the Department of Fine Arts.

Right now, his goal as an artist is to find an audience

for his drawings.

His talent is to thoroughly observe something, fully

immerse with it and capture it by drawing it. ‘During

drawing I am guided by my imagination. This determines

the form and the lines of the drawing. Drawing is within

my capabilities at this time the most comprehensive

method of capturing ‘Sparkles’.’

Sparkles

‘I go somewhere and forget all the conventions. This way

I can see more clearly and see everything around me as

if I see it for the first time. The things that catch my eye,

often very common things that seem to be uninteresting,

then prove to have properties that are actually very

special but to which we no longer pay attention. I call

this the hidden ‘Sparkles’ of things, which you can see

by looking at it again with an open mind and through the

eyes of a child.’

As the subject of his drawings Bram uses things that

catch his eye when he goes somewhere to look for

inspiration. It is always the ‘Sparkles’ that catch his

attention. His only goal during the drawing is to capture

those ‘Sparkles’. This is reflected in his drawing style.

NL Jan van der Laan studeerde in 2010 af in de richting

Interieur Architectuur. Momenteel is hij bezig met een

serie zitmeubelen die met één woord te omschrijven

zijn: ‘Beleving’. Een zitmeubel kan mooi, comfortabel of

alleen maar functioneel zijn. Zijn doel is om de mensen

de ervaring van het zitten intenser te laten beleven.

De Naakte WaarheidHet object met de spijkers is gebaseerd op de Buxus

struik. Hoeveel inspanning wordt er wel niet verricht

om hem te vormen naar onze wens? Helaas sterft alles

een keer. Wat er overblijft van deze eens zachte groene

struik is ‘De Naakte Waarheid’. Precies het tegenover-

gestelde van wat er wordt nagestreefd. Gebeurd dit ook

met onze wereld?

ContraHet zitobject ‘Contra’ is afgeleid van het spijkerobject

‘De Naakte Waarheid’. Waar deze scherp, stug,

oncomfortabel en afschrikwekkend oogt is ‘Contra’

precies het tegenovergestelde. ‘Contra’ heeft zachte

ronde vormen die door een netwerk van veren met

elkaar verbonden zijn. Het oogt flexibel, humoristisch

en vreemd. Is dit wel een zitobject? Probeer het uit en

oordeel zelf.

SpanningSpanning is een ander zitobject uit de serie en heeft

geen verdere uitleg nodig.

‘Mijn achtergrond is werktuig en machinebouw.

Techniek is een grote inspiratiebron voor mij. Werken

van bijvoorbeeld Jean Tinguely kunnen mij uren

lang fascineren. Verder zie ik ook de natuur als grote

inspiratie bron, hieruit valt veel te leren. Het dieren- en

plantenrijk ontwikkelt zich al miljoenen jaren en is nooit

klaar met het aanbrengen van verbeteringen.’

The Naked Truth

The object with the nails is based on the Buxus. How

much effort is made to form this bush to our specific

wishes? Unfortunately everything dies at one time or

another. What remains of this once soft green bush

is ‘The Naked Truth’. Exactly the opposite of what the

objective was. Will this also happen to our world?

ContraThe object ‘Contra’ is derived from the chair ‘The Naked

Truth’. Where that one is sharp, rigid, uncomfortable

and appears unappealing to sit in, Contra is exactly the

opposite. Contra consists of soft round shapes, which

are linked together by a web of springs. It appears

flexible, humorous and quite strange. Is this seriously

meant as a seating object? Try it and judge for yourself.

TensionTension is another seating object from the series and

does not need any explanation.

‘My background is in mechanical engineering.

Technology is a great inspiration for me. The art of

Jean Tinguely can fascinate me to no end. Nature is

also a great source of inspiration, much can be learned

here.The plant and animal kingdom has developed for

millions of years and is always evolving.’

ENGJan van der Laan graduated in 2010 as an Interior

Architect. He is currently working on a series of

seating objects, which can be described in one word:

‘Experience’. A seating object can be beautiful,

comfortable or just functional. The main purpose of his

objects is to let people experience simply sitting more

intensely.

ROZA OUDGENOEG

NL Roza Oudgenoeg-Stegeman is 24 jaar en net

afgestudeerd aan de KABK(Koninklijke Academie voor

de Beeldende Kunsten) te Den Haag. In haar werk laat zij

zich inspireren door dingen die haar raken. Dit kunnen

boeken zijn, maar ook gebeurtenissen uit de wereld om

haar heen zoals oorlog, geweld, documentaires etc.

Ook muziek is een grote inspiratiebron voor haar.

‘Ik werk vanuit mijn emoties en gebruik o.a muziek

om in de emotie te komen die ik voor een bepaald

schilderij nodig heb, een soort method acting maar

dan in ‘t schilderen.’ Behalve schilderijen maakt Roza

ook installaties, waarin zij een combinatie probeert te

maken tussen 3D en 2D.

Het Joodse EvangelieVoor dit werk heeft Roza zich laten inspireren door

de Evangelie van Judas, waarin te lezen is dat Judas

geen verrader was maar slechts deed wat Jezus hem

opdroeg. ‘Zelf ben ik Joods en voor mij is het natuurlijk

fantastisch om met mijn installatie een poging te wagen

om Judas’ naam te zuiveren, omdat door de traditionele

versie van Judas het beeld is ontstaan van ‘slechte

Jood’. Het zou fantastisch zijn om dat te ontkrachten,

maar ik besef dat het ook heel moeilijk is aangezien het

traditionele beeld al eeuwenlang erin gebeiteld is.’

ENGRoza Oudgenoeg-Stegeman is 24 years old and just

graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in the

Hague. For her work she uses subjects which attract

her. This could be books but also things that happen

in the world like war, violence, documentaries etc.

Music is also a very important source of inspiration for

her. ‘I use my emotions as a base for my works and I

use music to get into these emotions which I need

for a certain painting. Like method acting but then in

painting.’ Except painting Roza also makes installations

in which she tries to combine 2D and 3D.

The Jewish Gospel

For this work Roza was inspired by the Gospel of Judas,

in which you can read that Judas was no traitor but just

did what Jesus asked him to do. ‘I am Jewish and for

me it’s fantastic to try to clean Judas’ name, because in

the traditional version there is a stereotype of bad Jew.

It would be wonderful to show that this image of Judas

and the Jewish stereotype is not true. But I realize how

hard this is because the traditional image is carved for

centuries in our memories.’

Mario Raffael Enrico Pasetto is geboren en opgegroeid

in Etten-Leur, waar hij nog steeds woonachtig is. Hij

is afgestudeerd aan de Kunstacademie St. Joost te

Breda. Mario is beeldend kunstenaar ten top; hij tekent,

schildert, fotografeert en maakt sculpturen. Zijn werken

kenmerken zich veelal door zijn grafische achtergrond.

Hierbij voeren vlakverdeling, patroonvorming, herhaling,

contrastrijk en helder kleurgebruik de boventoon. In zijn

werken vindt u ook vaak aspecten uit de natuur, het

vrije gevoel, waar we bewust of onbewust allemaal naar

streven en daarentegen zijn ‘dwangmatige’ neiging naar

controle terug.

Kunst is voor Mario het resultaat van een creatief proces.

Het is de emotie van de aanschouwer in combinatie met

het beeld van de maker die bepalend zijn wat KUNST is

en deze ontstaat pas als deze twee elementen elkaar

treffen. De maker en de aanschouwer zijn aldus even

bepalend en onontkoombaar aan elkaar binnen dit

gehele creatieve proces.

Drip ImaginationDrip Imagination staat voor een serie aan schilderijen en

sculpturen. Bij deze expositie treft u een schilderij en een

verscheidenheid aan sculpturen aan. Drip Imagination

is als serie ontstaan door zijn perfectionisme en tevens

zijn antipathie tegen verfdruipers die kunnen ontstaan

bij het gebruik van verschillende spuittechnieken. Drip

Imagination is te beschouwen als de antipathie die

verwordt tot een sympathie.

Mario legt in de serie Drip Imagination de nadruk

op deze antipathie en concentreert zich sec op het

realiseren van druipers. Alle werken binnen de serie

Drip Imagination bevatten druipers die op bewuste

wijze zijn geconstrueerd. Met controle is een vrij gevoel

uitgebeeld. Dit is te vertalen naar de wijze waarop veel

mensen met hun leven omgaan. We zijn geneigd om een

veilige wereld voor onszelf te creëren. Is controle op ons

leven echter wel mogelijk? Is ons leven een toevallige

samenloop van omstandigheden of een resultaat van

bewuste keuzes?

Mario Raffael Enrico Pasetto was born and raised in

Etten-Leur, where he still resides. He is a graduate

of the Academy of fine arts St. Joost in Breda. Mario

is an artist with many talents; he draws, paints, takes

photographs and realizes sculptures. His works are

characterized mostly by his graphic background like

level distribution, pattern formation, repetition and the

usage of contrast-rich and bright colors. His works are

further characterized by the influence of nature, feeling

free and on the other hand his ‘compulsive’ tendency

to control.

Mario sees art as the result of a creative process. It is the

emotion of the beholder in combination with the image

of the creator that determine what art is and it arises

only when these two elements meet. The maker and the

beholder are thus equally decisive and inevitable to each

other within this entire creative process.

Drip Imagination

Drip Imagination stands for a series of paintings and

sculptures. In this exhibition you will find different works

of Mario: a painting and a variety of sculptures. Drip

series is created by his perfectionism and his antipathy

against drips of paint that may arise when using

different injection techniques. Drip Imagination can

be seen as the antipathy that is becoming a sympathy.

Mario focuses on and emphasises this antipathy in the

series by only realizing drips. All works within the series

Drip Imagination have drips that are constructed in a

conscious way. He shows a free feeling in a controlling

way. This can be translated to how many people deal

with their lives. We are inclined to try to create a safe

world for ourselves. Can we control our lives? Or is our

life an accidental coincidence or a result of conscious

choices?

JOYS OF A CHILD-HOOD

Kunstenares Martijntje Cornelia studeerde in 2011 af

aan de Willem de Kooning kunstacademie te Rotterdam.

Haar werk ziet zij als een reis waarin ze haar

experimentele behoeften kan uiten en de veranderlijk-

heid van het leven tot een prettig maar vervreemdend

beeld kan neerzetten. ‘Beelden zijn op haar best als

het je uit evenwicht brengt. Je moet je durven over

te geven aan het onbekende en ervaren wat het met

zich meebrengt. Het onbestemde gevoel omarmen en

verliefd worden op haar schoonheid.’

The ephemeral joys of a childhood/ de vluchtige vreugdevan een kindertijdHet werk van Martijntje kenmerkt zich door

ongebruikelijk materiaal te verwerken in o.a. fotografie

en kleinschalige objecten. Zo zijn er in de serie ‘The

ephemeral joys of a childhood’, sieraden te zien

gemaakt van suikerspin. Suikerspin vormt het hart van

haar werk en staat symbool voor het leven.

‘Wat ik vroeger als lekkernij at, is van waarde veranderd.

Mijn fascinatie voor suikerspin is ontstaan na het maken

van een reusachtige hoed. De luchtigheid, kleurigheid

en de geuren deden mij stralen als een kind. Dit kleine

geluk was van korte duur, de luchtige delen waren

verdwenen in de leegte. Vanaf dat moment is mijn

passie ontstaan. De korte vreugde bij het zien van de

volle hoed en het verdriet wat kwam nadat er niks

meer van over was. Dit vormt de kern van mijn werk, de

transformatie van het leven en de veranderingen die we

opnieuw moeten waarderen.’

Martijntje onderzoekt de ideeën van transformatie,

vervorming, etc. en laat zien dat iets veranderlijks

ook prettig kan zijn. Zij creëert haar stukken door

permanent en tijdelijk materiaal te combineren, zoals

ijzer, touw, gesmolten spekjes en suikerspin. Het zijn

‘one of a kind’ stukken die met zorg gedragen moeten

worden. Elke stuk staat gelijk aan een leven. ‘Zodra het

gedragen wordt, weet ik niet hoe het sieraad verder

leeft. Het kan zijn dat temperatuur, zonlicht, water de

kleur en vorm doen veranderen.’

‘A passing fancyin a transient life’

‘Mijn fascinatie voor die onverwachte veranderingen en

de schoonheid die daaraan onderhevig is, vormen het

uitgangspunt van de gehele serie ‘A passing fancy in a

transient life’.’ Haar afstudeerwerk bestond dan ook

uit poëtische organische ‘schilderijen’. Beelden die net

als ‘the ephemeral joys of a childhood’ over de snelle

verandering van het leven gaan.

Artist Martijntje Cornelia graduated from the Willem de

Kooning art academy Rotterdam in 2011.

She sees her work as a journey in which she can express

experimental needs and can put the changeability of life

in a pleasant but alienating picture. ‘Images are at their

best when you put them off balance. You must surrender

to the unknown and experience the consequences.

Embrace the unknown feeling and fall in love with her

beauty.’

The ephemeral joys of a childhood

The work of Martijntje is known for integrating unusual

material in photography and small-scale objects.

For example, the collection ‘the ephemeral joys of a

childhood’ shows jewelry made of candy floss. Candy

floss is the heart of her work and symbolizes life.

‘When I was little I used to eat candy floss as a treat, now

the meaning of candy floss has changed for me.

My fascination for working with candy floss grew after

making a gigantic hat. So fluffy and colorful, with a sweet

smell, it made me light up as a child. This happy feeling

lasted only for a short while because the fluffy parts

vanished in eternity. After this moment, my fascination

only grew bigger. The happy feeling in the beginning

when seeing the giant hat and the sorrow afterwards

when the hat slowly vanished. That makes the core of

my work, the transformation of life and changes that we

have to re-evaluate over and over again.’

Martijntje explores the ideas of transformation,

distortion etc. and shows that change can be something

good. She creates her pieces by combining permanent

and temporary material, like iron, rope, melted

marshmallows and cotton candy. They are ‘one of a

kind’ pieces that have to be worn with care. Every piece

equals life. ‘Once a piece is worn I never know how it

will develop during the process’. It can be that the

temperature, sunlight or water change the color and

shape.

‘My fascination for those unexpected changes and the

beauty which is dependent on the changeability of life

are the starting point of the whole series ‘A passing

fancy in transient life’. The graduation piece of Martijntje

also consisted of poetic organic works of art. Images

that are just like ‘the ephemeral of joys of a childhood’,

completely about the rapid change of life.’

Ze benadrukt het unieke van de mens en de schoonheid

van de wereld om daar vervolgens een eigen

interpretatie aan te geven. Haar interesse in ieders

verhaal heeft ertoe geleid dat ze naast het exposeren en

fotograferen voor opdrachtgevers de studie Antropologie

en Ontwikkelingssociologie is gaan volgen, om zo haar

fotoseries over mensen te combineren met journalistiek

en onderzoek.

PerformersIn de fotoserie ‘Performers’ heeft Sascha Varkevisser

dansers gefotografeerd die bezig zijn om hun droom,

professioneel danser worden, te verwezenlijken. Ze

trainen intensief om uitzonderlijk goed te worden en

doen regelmatig aan audities en optredens. Sascha

Varkevisser kwam op het idee om de serie te maken

toen ze Gavin, een gepassioneerd danser, in zijn

spiderman-shirt ontmoette. Tijdens het project heeft ze

meerdere photo shoots met de dansers gehad, waarbij

ze ook langere tijd met danser Antonio heeft gewerkt. Ze

vind het belangrijk om in de foto’s een persoonlijk aspect

van de dansers te verwerken, waarbij ze de esthetische

vormen van dans gebruikt. In hun samenwerking

gebruiken de dansers de expressieve kracht van hun

lichaam als medium, en Sascha haar fotografie. De

titel ‘Performers’ vat de kern van hun ambitie en passie

samen: de eindeloze uren van gedisciplineerde oefening

leiden bij allen tot dat korte, bekoorlijke moment: het

moment van optreden voor publiek.

Sascha Varkevisser was haar hele jeugd al bezig met

fotografie. Op haar zeventiende begon ze met de

opleiding Fotografie aan de Willem de Kooning Academie

in Rotterdam. In haar werk creëert ze door het gebruik

van bestaande elementen en enscenering beelden waar

een kern van waarheid in zit en een element van haar

eigen belevingswereld.

Sascha Varkevisser has been actively involved in

photography since childhood. At seventeen she started

with Photographic Studies at the Willem de Kooning

Academy in Rotterdam. Her images contain existing and

staged elements that combine the essence of truth with

her own perceptions. She emphasizes the uniqueness

of humanity and the beauty of the world to demonstrate

her own interpretation. The stories behind her subjects

have inspired her, while continuing to exhibit and

engage in contract work, to study anthropology and

developmental sociology so her work with people is

reinforced by journalism and research.

Performers

The photographic essay ‘Performers’ by Sascha

Varkevisser portrays young dancers striving to reach

their dreams of becoming a professional. To achieve

excellence requires intensive training, frequent auditions

and performances. A meeting with a passionate dancer,

Gavin, dressed in a spiderman shirt, inspired Sascha

to create this essay. During the photo shoots she also

worked over a prolonged period with another dancer,

Antonio. Sascha highlights unique aspects of each

dancer in her images to reflect the aesthetic forms

of dance. The collaboration of these media combines

the expressive power of the dancers’ bodies with the

art of the photographer. ‘Performers’ encapsulates

the essence of a dancer’s ambition together with their

passion. Endless hours of disciplined practice lead to

that short magical moment – the public performance.
