GENERAL INFORMATION

TECHNICAL DATA

Fire-fighting pump sets manufactured according to the specifications of the European UNI-EN 12845 standard. Fixed fire-fighting installations - Automatic sprinkler systems.

DAB PUMPS reserves the right to make modifi cations without notice

E.g.: Max pressure 10 bar - pump 1 starts at 8 barand pump 2 at 6 bar

The main pump shall continue to operate until manually switched off using the STOP button on the electric panel.

In normal conditions (water requirement equal to zero) the system is under static pressure. When the first request for water is received the jockey pump will switch on to restore system pressure. If a significant flow of water is required (opening of sprinklers) the pressure of the system shall drop until the two pressure switches connected in series will activate the main pump. The two start pressure switches must be calibrated to start the pumps at the following pressure values:

OPERATION OF EN 12845 STANDARD FIRE-FIGHTING PUMP SETS

ONE PUMP SETS P = 0.8 X MAX PUMP PRESSURE

TWO PUMP SETSPUMP 1:P1 = 0.8 XMAX PRESSURE:

PUMP 2:P2 = 0.6 XMAX PRESSURE:

COMPOSITION OF MULTIPLE PUMP ARRANGEMENTSUNI-EN 12845 standard pump sets shall have the same characteristics and in addition:- where TWO pumps are installed each one shall be capable of independently providing the system‘s total flow rate (100%) - where THREE pumps are installed each pump shall be capable of providing at least 50% of the total flow rate. “Where more than one pump is installed in a high hazard superior or duplicate water supply no more than one shall be driven by an electrical motor (10.2)“. Therefore in the case of high hazard superior or duplicate water supply the sets shall be composed as follows: - no.1 electropump or diesel pump (100 %)- no.1 electropump + no.1 diesel pump (100% + 100%)- no.1 electropump + no.2 diesel pumps (50% + 50% + 50%)- no.3 diesel pumps (50% + 50% + 50%): Where there is one single water supply there is no limit in the number of electropumps that can be installed.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNI-EN 12845 STANDARD

The UNI-EN 12845 standard, Italian version of the European UNI-EN 12845 standard, established the criteria for the design, installation and maintenance of sprinkler systems and replaces the previous Italian standards UNI 9489 and UNI 9490. An automatic sprinkler system is designed to detect the presence of fire and extinguish it in the initial stage or keep the f lames under control unti l the f i re can be extinguished with other means. A typical sprinkler system includes: water supply, fire-fighting pump unit, control valves and a network of pipes fitted with sprinklers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

PERFORMANCE RANGE

DAB fire-fighting sets are available with or without pilot pump.

The jockey or pilot pump is installed to maintain pressure when small amounts of water are used avoiding the start-up of main pumps for small system leakages.

PRESSURE COMPENSATION PUMP - JOCKEY

The performance curves are based on kinematic viscosity values = 1 mm2/s and densities equivalent to 1000 Kg/m3. Curves and tolerance in compliance with ISO 9906.

PUMPS - EN 12845

The UNI-EN 12845 (10.1) Standard foresees “Horizontal or vertical pumps where maximum head and stop head are coincidental. Pumps shall be driven by electric motors or diesel engines. For HHP and HHS pre-

calculated systems they shall be capable of providing 140% of the flow rate at 70% of the head of the working point (100%).

SUCTION KITThe suction kit consists of a two flanged eccentric cone with screws, nuts and gasket to be applied on each pump suction port. It keeps the suction water velocity below 1.5 m/s and avoids the formation of air locks.

SUCTION STOP VALVESIn the case of flooded suction installation no. 1 valve (butterfly type) is necessary for each main NKV pump.

SUCTION ANTI-VIBRATION JOINTIn the case of flooded suction installation no. 1 valve (butterfly type) is necessary for each main NKV pump.

FOOT VALVES WITH FILTERIn the case of suction lift installation no. 1 foot valve must be installed for each main NKV pump inside the water supply tank of the set.

DELIVERY MANIFOLD ANTI-VIBRATION JOINT The anti-vibration joint is useful to reduce the vibrations transmitted to the system.

PRIMING TANKIn the case of suction lift installations a 500 l priming tank must be installed for each main NKV pump. It is complete with hydraulic connectors, mechanical float and float switch for connection with electric panel.

PRIMING TANKThe flow meter detects and provides indication of the operation of sprinklers in the pump premises (UNI-EN 12845 10.3.2). Through a contact it sends an alarm signal to the CSR panel. It must be installed on the 1“ hose present on the delivery manifold of the NKV EN set. The flowmeter kit is suitable for one pump and two pump sets.

CSR REMOTE ALARM SIGNAL PANEL This panel must be installed in a location permanently attended by responsible personnel. The panel shall visually and acoustically indicate the position of any alarm of the fire-fighting set (10.8.6.2). It must be connected to the electric panels of the main NKV pumps. The panel is suitable for both one pump and two pump sets.

MAINTENANCE AND PERIODIC CHECKS

SET-UP OF PREMISES FOR PUMP SETS UNI 11292

MAINTENANCE, INSPECTION AND CHECKSThe UNI-EN 12845 standard places a great deal of importance on system maintenance, including the pump sets. The system must always be in perfect working condition. According to the UNI-EN 12845 standard (20.1.1) the user must carry out a programme of inspection and checks, arrange a test, service and maintenance schedule, and keep records including a logbook which must be held on the premises. The user must arrange for the test, service and maintenance schedule to be carried out under contract by the system installer or similarly qualified company. The installer shall provide the user with a documented inspection and checking procedure for the system. The programme shall include instructions on the action to be taken in respect of faults, operation of the system with a particular mention of the procedure for emergency manual starting of pumps.

WEEKLY ROUTINE (to be carried out at intervals of no more than 7 days)The following must be checked and recorded: - pressure gauge readings - water tank level - level of water reservoirs - correct position of stop valves. The automatic pump starting test must be carried out as follows:a) Open the manual test valve b) When pump starts check pressure and record it c) Close the manual test valveIn the case of a diesel engine it must run for at least 5 minutes d) Press the STOP button to stop the pump e) PROCEDURE ONLY FOR DIESEL ENGINE PUMPS After the engine has stopped it must be immediately restarted using the manual test button „OPERATE MANUAL START“ f) Stop the pump using the STOP buttonOil pressure, engine temperatures and coolant flow must be monitored throughout the test.

MONTHLY ROUTINEThe electrolyte level and density of acid cells of starter batteries must be checked using a densimeter. If the density is low the battery charger must be checked and if this is working normally the affected batteries must be replaced.

QUARTERLY ROUTINE (to be carried out at intervals of no more than 13 weeks - 20.3.2)Any modifications to the system, change in hazard classification etc must be identified. Sprinklers, piping, pipe supports must be checked. Pumps must be started and pressure and flow rate must be checked. Correct operation of any generators - power units must be checked. Correct position of stop valves must be checked.

HALF-YEARLY ROUTINE (to be carried out at intervals of no more than 6 months)A dry run check of valves (in the system) must be carried out. Operation of alarms in the fire brigade station and control station must be checked.

YEARLY ROUTINE (to be carried out at intervals of no more than 12 months)Water supply pumps must be checked at full load and failed-to start test must be carried out.

3 YEARLY ROUTINETanks must be checked for internal and external corrosion and protection must be refurbished if necessary. Stop and check valves must be checked and replaced if necessary.

10 YEARLY ROUTINEAt no more than 10 year intervals all tanks must be cleaned and examined internally.

TECHNICAL NOTESThe Italian standard of reference for correct technical premises to house fire-fighting pump sets is the UNI 11292 (August 2008). Some excerpts of the standard are described below:

Location of premises for pump sets (4) Premises shall be above or below ground level and respectively separated, adjacent, inside the protected building. The premises must be easily accessible (also when the system is running) and well marked. The doors made of fireproof material must be at least 2 m high and 0.80 m wide. Easy introduction and removal of the main components must be guaranteed.

Characteristics of premises (5)Premises must have natural ventilation through permanent openings (min 0.1 m2). Inside walls must be of a light colour, preferably white. The minimum dimension must be sufficient to allow maintenance to be carried out in total safety. The height of the premises must not be less than 2.4 m. The size of the working space around the pump set must be of at least 0.80 m on at least three sides of each set.

Functional characteristics (6)The 200 lux lighting system must guarantee at least 25 lux per

60 min in case of blackout. The premises must be equipped with a system to drain any discharged water. Underground premises must be connected to the sewage system with a water flow rate of at least 20 m3/h. If this is not possible at least TWO draining pumps (one spare) are required with a flow rate of not less than 5% of the maximum flow rate of the set (in any case not less than 10 m3/h). One of the pumps must have an emergency power supply with 30 min autonomy in case of blackout. Any fault in the drainage pumps must be signalled to location permanently attended by responsible personnel. The pump premises shall be used for no other purpose than fire protection (UNI-EN 12845 10.3.1). The temperature of the pump premises shall be as follows: -4°C for electropumps -10°C for diesel engine pumps. The size of the premises must take into account the need to carry out maintenance and repairs.Adequate space must be left around the pumps for these activities. The possible need to dismantle a pump or complete motor must be taken into account. In any case it is recommended to leave a space of no less than 1 m between the pump set and the walls of the premises.
