ORAL HEALTH

Having sensitive teeth doesn’t mean

giving up your favourite food

and drinks. With some

precautions, you can

manage the condition

Celebrating Life6

HOW TO MANAGE SENSITIVITYUse toothpaste for sensitive teeth. These can be purchased

off-the-shelf from most pharmacies or supermarkets.

They work by blocking the microchannels of exposed dentine.

Try professionally applied desensitising pastes/varnishes/

sealants. Available at dental clinics, these are effective in targetting the exposed dentinal microchannels as well. The applications may

wear off over time due to brushing and normal functioning

of teeth, and can be reapplied during dental visits.

Fillings may be done for deeper abrasions and cavities. In most cases, there is immediate relief from sensitivity after the fillings are completed.

Gum grafting. Gum recession due to incorrect brushing can be resolved by a minor procedure of gum grafting and repositioning of the gums. Your dentist can assess if you are suited for this procedure.

In extremely severe cases of sensitive teeth and after all options have been considered, your dentist might recommend a root canal therapy for the affected tooth or teeth, based on your condition.

It is not uncommon to experience sudden, sharp pain while eating

or drinking as a result of sensitive teeth. Fortunately, the pain is often temporary and in most cases, your dentist can help.

WHAT CAUSES IT?The dentine, which is the inner layer of a tooth, contains microchannels that lead to the pulp where the nerves are. This underlying dentine is protected by a tougher layer of enamel in a normal situation, with the remaining root dentine covered by gums.

Enamel wear (by attrition, abrasion and erosion), cavities, cracks and receding gums may lead to exposed dentine. When in contact with hot, cold, sweet or acidic food and drinks, as well as cold air, teeth sensitivity occurs.

PREVENTIVE MEASURESUse a soft-bristled toothbrush. A toothbrush with hard bristles may wear down enamel and cause gums to recede.

Prevent gum disease as it can lead to bone loss and gum recession, which may then result in sensitive teeth. Make sure to visit your dentist as scheduled, on top of brushing and flossing daily.

Avoid chewing ice cubes or eating hard or brittle food as it may lead to a cracked tooth. Consuming too much acidic food or drinks may also erode the enamel.

Minimise the use of teeth whitening or bleaching products as this can wear down the enamel and lead tosensitive teeth.

Control teeth grinding. Wear a night guard made by your dentist if you grind your teeth while sleeping, as it can be damaging as well.

COVER STORY

Dad for

This Father’s Day, daddy blogger Steven Teo shares why being a father of five has given him joy

For some parents, the name Steven Teo may ring a bell. The father of five is the owner of The “Perfect” Father, a parenting blog whose tongue-in-cheek name implies that even though

Steven may not be a perfect dad, he always strives to be the best father he can be to his kids.

Not only does he devote enough quality time to them, he also brings them up with the right values.

“I try to find teachable moments in every situation,” he shares. “For example, we would occasionally encounter people giving up their seats for others on public transport, and I’ll try to get them to understand why people do such acts, so they know the value of kindness.”

Watching them grow into caring and useful individuals in society is what makes him a proud father, he adds.

Steven and his wife, Lai Fong, are parents to three girls, Steffi, 10, Stacci, 7, and Starri, who is three months old, as well as two boys, Leroy, 9, and Louie, 4. When W

Celebrating Life last met the Teos in 2014, they were just a family of six, and both parents did not demur at the idea of having a fifth child.

When asked what has changed now that another kid has joined the family, Lai Fong laughs: “We can no longer fit into a taxi!”

“It’s business as usual for us, actually, but that may be because this is the fifth time we’re having a child!” Steven admits.

Like the rest of their children, Starri was also born at Thomson Medical. Steven says: “We’ve always been impressed with the care extended by Thomson’s staff, and this time, it was no different. Starri was born with a lung infection, and thankfully, Thomson’s doctors and nurses were experienced enough to respond quickly by sending her to the neonatal intensive care unit for treatment.”

INFLUENCER DADSteven first started his blog in 2014,

I’ve had many people tell me they’ve been inspired to have more kids after reading my blog. They would say, ‘If Steven can do it, I can as well!’

chronicling his adventures with his children and his journey as a father. He showed readers how it is possible to raise four kids in Singapore, and shared the innumerable joys of being a parent.

His experiences as a dad and musings on modern fatherhood have struck a chord with many parents, so much so that he has even spurred many of his readers to have children, like a true social media influencer.

“I’ve had many people tell me they’ve been inspired to have more kids after reading my blog,” he reveals. “They would say, ‘If Steven can do it, I can as well!’”

He shares that being a parent today is very different from how it was in the past. “It’s all about respectful parenting now, where you are buddies with your kids. It’s so different compared to when I was a kid, when we had a fatherly figure to obey and listen to. For me, it’s all about striking that balance between being a friend to my children

and instilling discipline and good values in them.”

Having five children means taking a different approach for each of them. “Each child is an individual with different needs and ways of learning. That’s why we believe there’s no such thing as ‘equal time’ for each child, as they will all require different amounts of time spent together for their needs to be met,” he says.

One way in which Steven tries to get to know his children more intimately is to take each kid on what he calls “one-on-one bonding trips” just before they begin primary school. During the trip, father and child explore the new country or city together. Steven went to Seoul with Steffi in 2014, to the Gold Coast with Leroy in 2016, and to Perth with Stacci last year.

“These trips are important because they allow me to spend time with each child before they begin formal schooling. Away from the distractions

of the household, I’m able to tune in to each child and understand him or her better,” Steven says.

PLAN THEM EARLYHaving experienced the many joys of being a father, Steven advises other men – especially those who love kids – to have them as soon as possible. Even though Steven got married to Lai Fong at 23, they only had Steffi when they were 29.

“Given a chance to go back in time, Lai Fong and I would have liked to have our children much earlier. Just imagine, if we had them earlier, they would be teens by now, and I’ll probably be going to clubs with them!” he jokes.

It’s always possible to plan for parenthood, no matter how busy your personal life is, Steven adds. “Planning when you are younger means you would have more energy and more time to spend with them. There are really more pros than cons in having children early.”

Learn about two rejuvenating nonsurgical

treatments for postpartum mums

It is perfectly natural for women to gain weight after pregnancy, even after shedding the kilos soon after giving

birth. With successive pregnancies, a woman’s weight and the percentage of body fat can go up, with certain areas – the hips, thighs and abdomen – prone to retaining more fat. Postpartum mums may also complain that their skin seems to lose firmness and lustre.

This is partly due to normal ageing. Stresses of taking care of a baby, sleep deprivation and poor dietary habits can also lead to tired-looking skin as well as fat accumulation.

While a woman can lose fat overall with a sensible diet and regular exercise, certain areas of her body are more resistant to fat reduction even with the most rigorous programmes. Extreme dieting and exercise are also harmful to the body and may lead to malnourishment and musculoskeletal injuries.

Spot reduction, which is reduction of fat in a specific area of the body, is now possible without surgical procedures like liposuction. The latest noninvasive

treatment for spot reduction is the use of radiofrequency. Radiofrequency energy is applied to fatty areas, thereby accelerating the metabolism of the fat cells. These cells may even break down, leading to loss of fat in the targeted areas.

There are virtually no side effects from radiofrequency treatment. Radiofrequency can also be used to tighten skin by enhancing collagen production. Loose skin, fine lines on the face and anywhere on the body where signs of ageing are most apparent can be treated with radiofrequency. It is also used to treat musculoskeletal pain and is an effective tool to help women who have chronic lower back pain after giving birth.

If skin rejuvenation is the only concern, low level laser therapy (LLLT) can also be effective. These are low-power lasers that do not burn the skin but penetrate up to three centimetres into the skin. LLLT enhances cellular division and promotes collagen production and tissue regeneration. Its effectiveness has been validated by Harvard Medical School.

Radiofrequency and LLLT have been used with great success on patients with musculoskeletal symptoms, and these treatments are now available and effective for aesthetic use. Women today have additional tools at their disposal to maintain healthy and glowing skin while experiencing the joys and emotional rewards of motherhood.

BRINGING 40 YEARS OF CARING FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN CLOSER TO YOU Thomson Women’s Clinic (Jurong) and Thomson Paediatric Centre (Jurong) have relocated! We are now located at:

Jem Shopping Mall, 50 Jurong Gateway Road, #04-18, Singapore 608549

P regnancy and childbirth are very special moments in a couple’s life. For first-time parents, there will be

many questions about pregnancy care and choices, such as what to expect in the first few months of your pregnancy, and when to book your first appointment to see a doctor. A good time to confirm your pregnancy with your doctor is around week 7, when the embryo is about 10 millimetres long from head to bottom. At this stage, your embryo gets its nourishment from the yolk sac to grow and form the different organs in the body.

Your doctor will ask you questions about your health and previous pregnancies (if any) to understand how to care for you. A transvaginal scan will be offered to confirm that the pregnancy is in the womb and healthy. If you have

pain or bleeding, have health issues or previous pregnancy problems, you should see your doctor as soon as possible.

EARLY PREGNANCYAdopting a healthy diet and light exercise will improve your pregnancy and experience. During pregnancy, you should avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeine and certain foods listed below as these can harm your baby.

• Raw or undercooked meat such as salami and prosciutto

• Raw or undercooked egg • Pâté including vegetable pâté • Unpasteurised milk and dairy products • Soft cheese such as brie, camembert,

goats’ cheese and Danish blue• Liver and food high in vitamin A,

such as cod liver fish oil, as high levels can harm the baby

• Some types of fish like shark, swordfish and marlin, as they have high levels of mercury

You should have already started on folic acid to reduce your baby’s risk of neural tube defects. Your doctor may also advise you to take antenatal supplements including vitamin D to promote your baby’s healthy growth.

Pain and bleeding are common in early pregnancy. Many women also tire easily. If you experience these symptoms, you should discuss them with your doctor. You may also be offered progesterone hormone if you have pregnancy bleeding to reduce the risk of miscarriage.

WEEKS 8–10A follow-up visit is usually arranged about one to two weeks after you have confirmed your pregnancy. The estimated due date is about 40 weeks from your last menses if you have a regular 28-day cycle.

At this stage, your baby is now called a foetus. A foetus at 9 weeks is about 22 millimetres long and the body features are slowly taking shape.

If the pregnancy is healthy, your doctor may request for routine blood tests to assess your blood count, blood group and antibodies, as well as testing for hepatitis B, syphilis and HIV. If you have a medical history, you may be offered additional testing.

Your doctor may also discuss Down’s syndrome screening or screening for genetic diseases. These would typically be at the first trimester screening (FTS) involving the measurement of the foetus’ neck thickness, mother’s hormones and age at 11 to 13 weeks, or noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) assessing the foetal DNA in the mother’s blood from 9 weeks.

Nausea and vomiting generally peak during this time and improve as you enter the second trimester. If your symptoms are not controlled by dietary changes and antiemetics (nausea medicine), your doctor may request further tests to exclude other illnesses such as urinary tract infection and thyroid disease.

It is also common for couples to experience emotional ups and downs during this time even though they are excited about having a baby. If these feelings are troubling, you should seek help. Finances may also be a concern for many couples. You may wish to check what financial support is available with agencies such as the Ministry of Social and Family Development.

WEEK 12This is the final week of your first trimester! Your foetus is now fully formed but will continue to grow and mature. During this check-up, your doctor will discuss the results of your routine blood tests and FTS or NIPT. Some couples may require further testing if there is any concern with their results.

Most early pregnancy symptoms should improve. The pregnancy is also more stable – most couples reveal they are expecting at this time. If you are working, you may wish to inform your employer so that you can continue to work in an appropriate manner and your duties can be covered when you go on leave. You may wish to check your rights and obligations with agencies such as the Ministry of Manpower.

WEEK 13 AND BEYONDIf this is your first pregnancy, couples generally benefit from attending antenatal classes and hospital tours. This usually happens during the mid-trimester. Parental classes can prepare you and your partner for pregnancy, labour and child. They can also allow you to meet other parents-to-be to share experiences.

Keeping active in an uncomplicated pregnancy can reduce complications such as body aches, high blood pressure and diabetes, improve well-being and shorten labour time. Short frequent episodes of exercise (approximately 30 minutes) three to four times a week is preferred over prolonged intense regimes. Brisk walking, jogging, swimming, antenatal gym and yoga are suitable exercises. Avoid activities where you may fall, get hit or overheat. You should not become breathless and should be able to continue a conversation during your exercise. If all is well, your next doctor’s visit is usually around 16 weeks.

SKIN CARE

Ever wonder what those bits

of soft growth are on your

neck or even eyelids? Here are the facts

is advised to have them removed. As they are also not pleasant to look at, they can be removed for cosmetic reasons.

ARE SKIN TAGS THE SAME AS WARTS?No, they are different, although they can sometimes be misdiagnosed as warts. Warts are infectious skin lesions caused by a virus and can spread if untreated. Warts tend to have a rougher and more irregular surface, whereas skin tags tend to be smooth and soft.

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?Skin tags are easily removed through a minor surgical procedure under topical or local anaesthesia. They are usually snipped off or cauterised. While surgery can remove the skin tag completely, the treated skin can be a bit red and scabbed for about 10 days after the procedure. In some instances, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen can be used. Topical medications are not effective for skin tags.

CAN SKIN TAGS RECUR?Yes they can, even after removal. It is not totally preventable, although general measures such as maintaining a healthy weight and minimising friction and irritation in locations where skin tags are prone to occur, will help lower the chances of recurrence.

WHAT ARE SKIN TAGS?Also known as acrochorda, skin tags are small, benign growths attached to the underlying skin by a thin stalk, and typically appear on the neck, armpits and groin – areas where clothing rubs against the skin or where there is a lot of skin-to-skin friction. They can also be found on the eyelids and under the breasts in women.

Skin tags appear more often with age, and they are common among people over 40. They also tend to be seen among those who are overweight and may be associated with diseases such as diabetes. Skin tags also commonly occur during pregnancy – this is believed to be caused by hormonal changes.

DO THEY CAUSE PROBLEMS?They are harmless and generally may be left alone. However, skin tags can become irritated and infected if they are constantly rubbed or get repeatedly caught in clothing. In these situations, it

FAMILY FUN

Get your little one to tap on his inner horticulturalist

Your child’s school holidays need not be filled with boredom or mindless video games. A hands-on

activity like building a terrarium makes for great family fun and can inspire your child’s creativity.

YOU WILL NEED• A clean glass container of any kind.

Get creative: use fishbowls, teacups, Christmas baubles – anything that looks unusual and interesting

• Small plants that grow slowly, such as cacti, succulents, ferns, Peperomia, friendship plants, aquamarine or mosses

• Soil• Small rocks, stones, gravel or pebbles • Sand

Celebrating Life18

Tabletop• Landscaping accessories like figurines

and geodes (crystallised rocks)

Whether you opt for an open or closed terrarium, keep in mind that all the plants in it should have the same environmental needs. Open terrariums work best for sun-loving plants, but those that thrive in humidity, such as mosses, should be placed in a closed jar.

INSTRUCTIONS

1 Fill the bottom of your jar with rocks to collect water drainage.

If yours is a closed terrarium, add a thin layer of crushed charcoal to keep the soil fresh.

2 Pour a layer of sand over the rocks and charcoal.

3 Add some soil, ensuring this layer is deep enough for your plants to

root into. Together, the rocks, sand and soil should reach up to about one-third the height of your jar, with the soil layer being the thickest.

4 Remove your plants from their containers and brush off any

loose soil off the roots. You may want to trim some of the roots, depending on how long they are.

5 Place your plants in the soil, beginning from the largest to the

smallest. Create a hole in the soil, then nestle a plant in the hole. When you are done, pack some soil over the roots to hold the plant in place.

6 Play around with the arrangement by mixing different types of

plants. Be sure to leave some space for landscaping.

7 Here comes the best part. Go wild with your landscaping by

experimenting with everything from porcelain figurines and cake toppers, to agate slices or any other pretty trinkets!

8 Clean excess soil off the glass inside the jar, then add a small

amount of water. Enjoy your creation! WO
