Take All Your ChancesBy Eddie Kantar

    Dummy ♠ K 8 4 2 ♥ K 7 5 ♦ A Q J 10 2 ♣ A

    Declarer (You) ♠ 3 ♥ A Q J 10 9 6 4 3 ♦ 9 8 ♣ 10 4

After you open 4♥, partner checks to make sure you have an ace and sets you down in 6♥. Opening lead: ♣K: Plan the play.

You have two possible losers – a spade and a diamond – and you have two chances to get rid of at least one or them.

You can take the diamond finesse. If it wins, you make an overtrick, if it loses you are down one, as the ♠A is the setting trick. Alternatively, you can lead up to the ♠K first. If West has the ace, you won’t need the diamond finesse, as a diamond goes off on the ♠K assuming West goes up with the ace. If West plays low, the king wins and you can take the diamond finesse for an overtrick. If East tops the ♠K with the ace, you still have the diamond finesse available.

Tip: When two lines of play are available, take the one that gives you a chance (keeps you alive) to use the other if the first fails. Expect this theme (“staying alive”) to appear time and again in this set of hands, just as at the table. Lead up

to the ♠K to stay alive. Percentage-wise if you lead up to the ♠K

first (and that doesn’t work) and then take the diamond finesse, you have a 75% chance of making the hand (one of two finesses). If you put all of your eggs in the diamond-finesse basket, you only have a 50% chance of making your contract.

    The full deal: ♠ K 8 4 2 ♥ K 7 5 ♦ A Q J 10 2 ♣ A ♠ A 9 6 5 ♠ Q J 10 7 ♥ 2 ♥ 8 ♦ 7 6 4 3 ♦ K 5 ♣ K Q J 9 ♣ 8 7 6 5 3 2 ♠ 3 ♥ A Q J 10 9 6 4 3 ♦ 9 8 ♣ 10 4

Beth Frank and Sandy Cheshire of Canton OH were looking over their NCAA basketball brackets before the start of the Educational Foundation 299er Pairs on Thursday evening. For Frank, who has been playing a year and a half, it’s her first NABC. “I’m really excited. It’s like going to the Super Bowl,” she said. “I’m going to have one eye on my hand and another eye on my bracket. What could be better, to come to a national bridge tournament during the first weekend of March Madness.” Cheshire learned to play 30 years ago “but with a lot of gaps.” She has advice for filling out a bracket: “If they have ‘state’ in the name and it’s not preceded by one of the 50 states, they get an extra round.”

Book signingAuthor and expert player Eldad Ginossar will be signing copies of his new book “Power Up Your Bridge Game” on Sunday, March 24, beginning at noon. The signing will take place at the bookseller’s stand at the Convention Center on the second floor.

it’s a good idea to psych 1NT openings with hands that are off-shape and out of range. “I don’t do that. It’s not true that you need to do wild things to win.”

Less than one percentage point out of first, Jonathan Green from Melbourne FL scored 68.97% over the three sessions. William Bleish, the leader after day two, finished third with 68.53%.

Junhui Zhu swept both Flights B and C, picking up 32 masterpoints. Zhu, from Burnaby BC, also won Flight C in the NABC robot event last fall.

As a dad of two toddlers, Zhu says he doesn’t have time to play in face-to-face tournaments, though he’d like to someday. For the time being, he’s focusing on online bridge and plans to continue playing in the robot event at the NABCs.

“BBO is a great place for me to practice and improve my bridge skill,” Zhu says, explaining he likes the platforms statistic functions. “It seems to m the best way to improve bridge skills is by playing more rather than learning more.”

To make it easier for players to participate, the event – which has been held Monday through Wednesday preceding the NABC – was rescheduled so that it started the weekend before the NABC. More than 1900 players registered to compete.

Winners of the 2018 North American Pairs, Flight A: Zach and Adam Grossack, District 25.

Baldwin North American Pairs, Flight A

The Baldwin North American Pairs Flight A is a grassroots event that begins in the summer at the local club level. Qualifiers at the club level advance to unit competition and those qualifiers advanced to district finals. Three pairs from each district – more, depending upon attendance – qualify for the North American final.

Winners are honored by the Baldwin Memorial Trophy and also receive certificates of recognition.

The trophy is named for Col. Russell J. Baldwin (1889–1969), U.S. Army officer and expert on tournament procedure who was ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1943.

Baldwin was active as an organizer from the earliest days of contract bridge. He became a director of the American Bridge League and its treasurer shortly after its founding in 1927. He was a member of the ACBL Laws Commission and primarily responsible for the first Duplicate Code issued in 1935.

Baldwin was active as a tournament director from 1927 until 1941. After service in World War II, he was ACBL business manager from 1946 until 1951.

He was recalled to military serve at the outbreak of the Korean War and retired from the U.S. Army in 1957. He rejoined ACBL in 1958 and was in charge of tournament scheduling until his retirement in 1963.Previous winners:1979 Arthur Moore, Eric Robinson1980 Bob Feller, Jeffrey Hall1981 Helen Blakey, Robert Blakey1982 Bill Nuttig, Ivan Scope1983 John Griscom, Jim Felts1984 Steve Sion, Harold Stengel1985 Peter Boyd, Steve Robinson1986 Drew Cannell, G. Norman Kay Platinum Pairs begins today

The six-session Norman Kay Platinum Pairs gets underway today.

Eligible players are paid-up ACBL members who meet one of the following criteria: have earned 50 platinum masterpoints over the three

calendar years prior; earned at least 200 platinum points lifetime, or have attained Platinum Life Master or Grand Life Master rank. No exemptions will be granted for this event.

The event honors Norman Kay, who was named ACBL’s top performance player for the double decade 1957–1977. He was a World Bridge Federation Life Master who placed second in the Bermuda Bowl in 1961 and 1967, and second in the World Olympiad Teams in 1968 and third in 1960.

An ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 13,000 masterpoints, Kay won the McKenney Trophy (now the Barry Crane Top 500) in 1955. Jan DacusJan Dacus

had a deep nurturing instinct that touched most everyone who came into contact with her. She married and raised a family while teaching high school Spanish. She loved gardening as much as bridge, and she was a natural at it.

Upon retirement, Jan took up duplicate bridge and in no time found herself teaching it at home while tending her invalid husband. She was a good bridge teacher. Jan also loved tournaments. It was a great compliment for a novice to be invited to play on Jan’s team. She was taken from us all too soon.

    Bill CoxBill Cox of

Jonesboro AR lost his battle with cancer on a Sunday night in March. A few hours before his death, he was sending a text to his bridge partner that he could not play on Monday. That was Bill.

He played and loved the game of bridge for many years. And even more, he loved helping those trying to learn the game. He used to say it took nine times to learn something. When his partner would forget a convention, he would smile and say, “That’s only five.” He could also say with grace and a mischievous grin, “Only 11.”

He loved competing at tournaments, especially with his teammates in Gatlinburg. Wherever he played, he was always interested

in meeting new people, hearing their stories and sharing his own.

If our game had more advocates like Bill, it would be hard to find a venue big enough to hold all the people coming to play. He will be missed by many who knew him. The game will miss those he would have taught.
