With raspberry and cherry fruit and a velvety palate, this tempranillo (a grape that makes Rioja) is a winner. 2014 Andara Merlot, Chile (£3.99, Aldi) Another incredibly competent red given its price. With only a few pence worth of wine in the bottle (given that duty is £2.05, VAT is 20% and transport costs significant), the money has gone a long way, resulting in a blackcurrant flavour and silky texture. 2013 Alliance de Vignerons Beaujolais, France (£4.99, Morrisons) I adore Beaujolais with its summer pudding flavours and lithe, silky palate. It’s not a complex wine, but a rewarding style for those of you who don’t go for hefty reds – and a great place to start if you haven’t yet been bitten by the red wine bug. 2014 M Signature Nero d’Avola, Sicily, Italy (£5.49, Morrisons) This is a stunning find, with a full, ripe palate stuffed with blackberry and plum nuances all topped off with a coffee bean twist. A sassy wine with a simple message, this is a rewarding creation with a teeny price tag – and made by a very smart winery, too. 2014 Gamay, Vin de Pays de l’Ardèche, France (£6, M&S) This stunning, feather-light, raspberry-scented red is made from the Beaujolais grape, gamay. It works well chilled with spicy food and with fish dishes, too. 2014 Reggiano Rosso, Single Estate, Italy (£6, M&S) Reggiano Rosso is a newly created wine appellation, and this M&S wine is the first to appear in the UK. It is made by Francesco Lombardini, who has combined three varieties of the lambrusco grape to make this dry, bold, fruit-soaked wine. 2014 Waitrose Romanian Pinot Noir, Dealu Mare (£6.99, Waitrose) Pinot noir is the fussiest red grape and I rarely find examples under £10 which pass muster. Romanian wines don’t make much of an impact on me either, so this breaks all the rules. It is a rare beauty with a plummy palate and a velvety texture. 2014 Rosso di Puglia, Puglia, Italy (£7, M&S) Made from the Southern Italian red grape negroamaro, this Puglian rosso is a combative, stocky little fellow with a jaunty air and a delightful explosion of red and black fruit. Without any oak to distract it, this has a lovely bite of acid on the finish and a charming character. 2012 Chinon, Domaine du Colombier, Loire, France (£7, Sainsbury’s) This red berry-imbued Chinon is made from the cabernet franc grape and is a lithe wine with deliciously accurate fruit tones. This is a red that will chill well for summer buffets. 2011 Primarius Oregon Pinot Noir, USA (£8.99, Tesco) I was amazed when I first tasted this wine a year ago – it’s truly unique. I’ve never found a wine from this boutique-winery- filled-state which tastes this elegant and accurate for under a tenner. Pinot fans must taste Primarius because it is a phenomenal find. 2013 Tesco Finest Marlborough Pinot Noir, New Zealand (£9.99, Tesco) Made for Tesco by Tamra Kelly-Washington, at Yealands (you’ll see her popping up a lot in this collection!), this is a smooth, brightly-fruited pinot which shows she has a great touch with this epic red grape as well as sauvignon blanc. 2013 The Co-operative Truly Irresistible Chinon Domaine de La Noblaie, Loire, France (£9.99, Co-op). This cabernet franc is made by a first-class estate in Chinon, in the heart of the Loire Valley. With blackberry and violet notes coupled with a refreshing, tangy finish, it’s thrilling and very versatile. 2013 Tasmanian Hill, Pinot Noir, Australia (£10.99, Tesco) This wine has softened and blossomed over the last 12 months making it one of the sexiest and most alluring on the High Street. Made by Brown Brothers for Tesco, this is a beautiful, sultry pinot noir. 2013 De Bortoli, Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon/ Merlot, Australia (£5, Asda) Bright, juicy and Ribena scented, this uses oak barrels for added hints of spice and cinnamon. 2013 Castel Boglione, Barbera/ Cabernet Sauvignon, Piemonte, Italy (£5.99, Waitrose) Clever and unusual, this hybrid wine conforms to new laws allowing a blend of grape varieties in Piemonte. The juicy, plummy barbera is interwoven with 20% cabernet for extra structure.

2013 Wolf Blass, Malbec, South Australia (£9.99, Morrisons) Argentina isn’t the only malbec heartland – there have always been large plantings in France. And with its bold dark-berry fruit and earthy tang, this shows Oz can also work wonders with the grape.

2012 Barossa Valley Estate, Shiraz, South Australia (£12.99, reduced to £9.69 until 2 June, Waitrose) This is about as full and flavoursome as red wine gets, with a blackberry core surrounded by French oak detail and statesmanlike tannins. Decant and serve with big meaty dishes.

2012 Yalumba, Y Series Shiraz/ Viognier, South Australia (£9.99, Tesco) This is a juicy shiraz with a dribble of the peach-scented white grape viognier, which tempers the tannins in the shiraz and gives this wine an unmistakable sheen and perfume. you will fall under its spell in a trice.

2013 Extra Special Dão, Portugal (£5, Asda) This wine spends six months in French oak and it’s impossibly posh for the money. if you love Portuguese reds, this is one with genuine flair and romance.

2014 Extra Special Barossa Valley Shiraz, South Australia (£5.98, Asda) A great cheapie from Asda. There is a hint of oak with the dark, tarry, shiraz fruit. i can’t believe that a wine as good as this only costs six quid.

2012 Ebenezer & Seppeltsfield Shiraz, Barossa Valley, South Australia (£15, M&S) Made by the great St Hallett winery in Barossa, this is a stunning blackberry and eucalyptus-scented red wine. it is full-bodied, palate-coating, memorable and delicious. Drink with barbecued steaks or roast beef.

2012 Crozes-Hermitage, Les Meysonniers M. Chapoutier, Northern Rhône, France (£16, Sainsbury’s) Chapoutier is a legendary producer in the Rhône and this is one of the greatest value wines in his large portfolio. Red wine doesn’t come more exciting and involving than this beauty.

2014 Camins del Priorat, Alvaro Palacios, Spain (£16.79, Waitrose) A monumental red from one of the greatest names in Spain, with the aroma and sheer class of a wine twice the price. Wistful, wild, gamey notes on the nose and dense black fruit on the palate lead the way and it is already in perfect balance.

2012 Penfolds, Koonunga Hill Shiraz/ Cabernet, South Australia (£9.99, Morrisons) Penfolds is Australia’s pre-eminent wine company and 2012 is a superb vintage. This red is made from ‘the blend that defines Australia’ and has power, depth and bravado. i’m extremely impressed by it.

2013 Ravenswood, Lodi Zinfandel, California (£9.99, Tesco) Ravenswood makes some of the best zinfandels around and this lodi wine has a very low price for its level of distinction. Decant it and prepare to be shocked by the intense blueberry and cinnamon notes.

2013 Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Priorat, Catalonia, Spain (£10, Sainsbury’s) Priorats are generally heavy wines with massive tannins. in this creation the tannins are under control. i am particularly impressed with it because most wines from this region cost upwards of £20.

2013 Frares, Priorat, Spain (£13, M&S) Frares comes from the powerhouse region of Priorat, where mighty reds are made. This garnacha/cariñena has mulberry, plum, liquorice and dark chocolate in abundance. it’s one of the wines of the year.

2014 Argento, Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina (£9.99, reduced to £6.66 each until 29 June, Majestic) Full of juicy blueberry fruit, this young red is well balanced and drinks beautifully. Malbec is a meaty grape but Argento somehow tames its wilder elements and the result is a bargain-priced wine with a fantastic flavour.

2011 Bobal Valsan 1831, Valencia, Spain (£6.99, Morrisons) Bobal has a rich mid-palate and refreshing spice on the finish. This is a complex and intriguing wine whose sophistication belies its lowly price. Take a break from more familiar flavours and strike out with this delicious red.

2013 Escura, Des Pins, Alicante Bouschet, Pays d’Oc, France (£9.99, virginwines.co.uk) Alicante Bouschet is a quirky red grape that’s sometimes a little too austere for its own good. luckily this version is sublime, with cherry and vanilla fruit, a brilliantly jaunty air and loads of energy and vibrancy.

2013 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia (£10, M&S) Wines from Coonawarra are revered all over the world. This one, made from grapes planted on terra rossa, a red earth cab sauv adores, should be decanted and served with meaty dishes.

2013 Pasqua, Passimento, Veneto, Italy (£10.99, Morrisons) With an amazing twang of acidity underpinning a stunning red-cherry core, this Valpolicella-style wine made by the famous Pasqua family could easily cost an awful lot more. Rich, lusty and complex, it’s a superstar red with a regal air.

2013 Villa Taurini, Nero d’Avola, Sicily, Italy (£5.99, Tesco) This budget red takes advantage of the glorious Sicilian sunshine to fully ripen its plump nero d’Avola grapes. Sicily is fast becoming the go-to region for pumped-up yet inexpensive reds such as this blackberry and mocha-stuffed beauty.

2014 St Hallett, Gamekeeper’s, Barossa Valley, South Australia (£7.49, Tesco) A juicy red with complex briary notes and a twist of spice on the finish. The trick here is not the predictable shiraz and grenache in the recipe but the port grape touriga nacional joining the fray and bringing exoticism and flair.

2013 Yalumba, Old Bush Vine Grenache, Barossa Valley, South Australia (£10.99, Co-op) like a sunnier version of Côtes-du-Rhône or Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this has a mesmerising plum nose and a velvety texture that confounds the senses. it’s one of Australia’s most thrilling, great-value reds.

2013 The Duke, Aragon, Spain (£7.99, Morrisons) i love the label on this cheeky red wine. The Duke himself is clearly a noble sort because this tempranillo/ shiraz/garnacha blend is smooth, all-enveloping and generous on the nose and palate. Delicious.

2012 Torres, Altos Ibéricos, Crianza Rioja, Spain (£10.49, Waitrose) An old-fashioned Rioja recipe is given a modern makeover here and the results are staggering. The bright red cherry and rose-scented fruit is sensitively assembled and delicious on both the nose

and the palate.

2014 Sainsbury’s Winemaker’s Selection Côtes-du-Rhône Rosé, France (£6, Sainsbury’s) not all pale rosés are innocent – some are macho, like this one. A great match with barbecued lamb chops.

2014 Tesco Finest Domaine de Sours, Bordeaux Rosé, France (£6.79, Tesco) A stunningly hued rosé with a bright, red cherry-scented nose, this is made with juicy merlot grapes not far from Saint Emilion in Bordeaux. it’s perfect as an aperitif, but with enough character to tackle cold cuts, prawns and soft cheeses.

2014 Chiaretto Rosé, Monferrato, Italy (£7.50, M&S) This is a small price to pay for a sour cherry-drenched italian rosé and i love the whoosh of raspberry fruit on the finish. Pop a couple on ice and drink with indian food or marinated, barbecued ribs.

2014 Marquesa de la Cruz, Garnacha Rosé, Campo de Borja, Spain (£7.99, Waitrose) nearly red in colour, this is a terrific rosé with masses of cherry cola-like notes on the nose and a fruits-of-the-forest palate. you can step up to meaty dishes with ease with Marquesa de la Cruz in your glass.

2014 Taste the Difference Côtes de Provence Rosé, France (£8, Sainsbury’s) A lighter rosé with elegance in its wild strawberry-themed make-up, this is an enchanting aperitif wine – and should only go as far as starters before you move to a sturdier bottle.

2014 Côtes-du-Rhône Rosé, Reserve du Boulas, France (£8, M&S) This is another rosé which approaches the weight of a redwine in depth and structure. The colour is a deep shade of pink and the fruit notes are bold and assertive. This will appeal to a wide range of palates.

2012 Waitrose Douro Valley Reserva, Quinta da Rosa, Portugal (£10.99, Waitrose) i urge you to taste this mighty yet sensitive, plum and tar-scented red. With juicy fruit and a honed texture, it’s a delicious, full-bodied wine from a very famous winery in one of the greatest wine regions of all.

2012 Marques de Casa Concha, Merlot, Peumo, Chile (£11.99, Tesco or £71.94 for 6, Tesco Wine By The Case) With brooding mulberry and damson fruit and lush vanilla and cinnamon-scented oak nuances, this is a flamboyant wine with real impact. Decant it and drink with barbecued steaks.

2013 Robert Oatley, Signature Cabernet Sauvignon, Margaret River, Western Australia (£11.99, Co-op) Margaret River is one of the best regions for cab sauv and this is a stunning example. Classy with a masterful cassis theme – you won’t find a better wine for less than £25!

2012 Peirano Estate, Six Clones Merlot, Lodi, California (£15.99, reduced to £11.99 each if you buy 2 bottles, Majestic) What a crazy price for such a swashbuckling wine. Californian merlot can cost the earth and many wineries have waiting lists of eager clients. Jump the queue with this superb wine.

2014 Dominio del Plata, Terroir Series Malbec by Susana Balbo, Mendoza, Argentina (£12, M&S) This is a dense, briary wine with masses of black fruit, pepper and cake spices on the nose and palate. Hedonistic and chewy, this is a wine for brave souls with big appetites.

2013 El Pájaro Rojo, Bierzo, Spain (£10.97, Asda Online) Asda has found a thriller in this delicious mencía. This grape is native to the northwest of Spain, where it makes a uniquely enticing wine with a blackberry theme and a full, juicy palate. There is little tannin here, which makes it taste even more succulent.

2014 Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Fairtrade Morador Malbec, Argentina (£8, Sainsbury’s) Morador is a full-bodied, mighty malbec tamed by a decent amount of smart French oak. The chocolatey depth and intensity mean that you must serve it with some juicy barbecued steaks.

2014 Nieto Senetiner, Bonarda, Mendoza, Argentina (£9, M&S) The bonarda grape flourishes in Argentina, usually making less expensive reds for simple glugging. This wine is a very different proposition: it is dense, dark, plum-soaked and impressive with a heroic finish.

2013 Casillero del Diablo, Reserva Privada, Maipo, Chile (£9.98, Asda) Casillero del Diablo’s entry-level cabernet is the finest value in the world and this souped-up version is even better. A cabernet/syrah blend, it’s one of the great reds under a tenner.

2013 The Cubist, Old Vine Garnacha, Calatayud, Spain (£9.99, Waitrose) The garnacha grapes used in this wine grow on 100-year- old vines and the depth of flavour is incredible. The colour is rich and dark, the nose is full and detailed and the finish is long and lusty. A fantastic wine.

2013 Willunga 100, McLaren Vale Grenache, South Australia (£12, Oddbins) Mclaren Vale’s maritime climate is ideal for growing grapes – and this juicy grenache is a perfect example. With its mulberry-pie aroma and creamy, hedonistic texture, it provides a generous hug of flavour and a sumptuous finish.

2014 Saumur-Champigny, Domaine de la Croix de Chaintres, Loire, France (£12.79, reduced to £9.99 from 10-30 June, Waitrose) Decant this posh, youthful cabernet franc to allow it to breathe and you’ll be rewarded with a violet and blackberry-scented wine that will age well for up to five years.

2013 Secano, Maiten Vineyard Block 1 Pinot Noir, Leyda Valley, Chile (£13, M&S). Thanks to its perfect climate, the leyda Valley is fast becoming Chile’s most important region for pinot noir, and here it’s produced a truly captivating wine with a red-fruit nose, a gossamer palate and a long, heavenly finish.

2013 Peacock’s Fan, Malbec, Clare Valley, South Australia (£14, M&S) Blessed with enchanting aromatics including red berries and cherries, as well as a thrillingly silky palate, this wine reveals a side of the meaty malbec grape we rarely get to see, with gentle fruit and a very long, classy finish.

2010 Moulin-à-Vent, Château des Jacques, Louis Jadot, Beaujolais, France (£16, Sainsbury’s) This top-flight Beaujolais is fully mature and displays succulent, juicy, strawberry-kissed notes with an underlying seriousness and breeding courtesy of its organically grown grapes.

2014 Château Gillet, Bordeaux, France (£7.50, M&S) it’s hard to find decent claret for less than a tenner. But this is a glorious exception, with smooth merlot fruit leading the way. With refreshing acidity on the finish, this is perfect for Sunday roasts.

2014 La Garnacha, Salvaje del Moncayo, Spain (£10.49, reduced to £7.87 each if you buy 2 bottles, Majestic). This is an amazing find! With wild berry notes, liquorice and a cherry finish, it’s dry but not tannic. Decanted, it’ll rise to any food-matching challenge – the price is crazy for a wine of this quality.

2013 Montes, Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon, Colchagua, Chile (£7.99, Co-op) Montes is a famous company with an enviable reputation, and they’ve scored another winner with this inexpensive beauty. it’s a wine that’ll get even better over the next two or three years, so keep a few extra in your rack.

2013 Torre del Falco, Nero di Troia, Puglia, Italy (£7.99, reduced to £5.99 from 10-30 June, Waitrose) Made from the increasingly fashionable nero di Troia grape, this fascinating wine features violets, liquorice and plum notes on the nose and a super-smooth palate. There’s even a touch of rose water too.

2010 Muriel, Rioja Reserva Vendimia Seleccionada, Spain (£10.65, reduced to £7.99 each if you buy 2 bottles, Majestic) i could hear Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood saying ‘AH-MAy-ZinG’ in my head when i tasted this marvel, which has a modern sheen over a classical mulberry-and-spice palate.

2013 El Monstruo de las Montañas Malbec/Bonarda, Argentina (£10.99, virginwines.co.uk) ‘El monstruo de las montañas’ – the monster of the mountains – refers to the Andean yeti, and the name hints at the brooding menace of this creation in which the mighty malbec grape is tempered by juicy, plummy bonarda.

2010 Baron de Ley, Reserva Rioja, Spain (£10.99, Co-op) Having spent 44 months ageing –half in barrels and half in the Baron de ley cellars – this tempranillo is at the top of its game. The cinnamon and vanilla toastiness from the barrels allows the aroma of this great wine to tantalise the senses.

2013 Noster Nobilis, Priorat, Spain (£7.98, Asda) My goodness me, this is a brilliant wine. i was floored when i tasted it. The fruit is huge, dark and brooding with mulberry and liquorice tones. This wine will amaze you with its imperious flavours!

2014 Tesco Finest Malbec, Catena, Argentina (£7.99, Tesco) This wine is made by none other than the great Catena winery – South America’s greatest wine dynasty. A spectacular malbec, this delivers class and distinction in every molecule – make sure you decant it for maximum impact.

2013 Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Château Tanunda Cabernet/ Merlot, South Australia (£10, Sainsbury’s) This gripping red from the historic Château Tanunda winery is like an unhinged Aussie version of a red Bordeaux, with an exotic perfume and loopy red fruit notes.

2013 Notte Rossa, Primitivo di Manduria, Italy (£10, M&S) With dark, prune and char notes coming from ripe primitivo grapes and superb use of both French and American oak barrels, notte Rossa is a force to be reckoned with. A massive wine with a gentle heart.

100 best summer reds & rosÉ wines

2012 Era Costana, Crianza, Rioja, Spain (£7, Sainsbury’s) This is reminiscent of the Rioja flavours of the 80s – but with a refreshingly modern twist on the finish. The fruit is raspberry and vanilla-kissed with a gorgeous texture, and the twist is that you’re left not with an oaky tang but with a crunch of refreshing acidity.

2013 Taste the Difference Barbera d’Asti, Piemonte, Italy (£8, Sainsbury’s) With more depth of flavour than many barberas, this is a plump, feisty wine with liquorice and spice and a desire to be twinned with main course italian fare. There is crisp acidity here, which calls for cheesy or meaty sauces.

2013 Château Capitoul, La Clape, Languedoc, France (£7.49, Co-op) The wines from the little-known la Clape region in the South of France are some of the most underrated in the country. With plenty of spice on the palate, this is a gorgeous, hearty, stylish red.

2014 Vistamar, Late Harvest Moscatel, Limarí Valley, Chile (£6.99, half bottle, reduced to £5.24 each if you buy 2 bottles, Majestic) This bargain-priced wine, which arrives on the shelves this month, is one of the cheapest sweeties i’ve ever written up, but lacks nothing in terms of class. The honeyed fruit is sensational.

2013 Feiler-Artinger, Beerenauslese, Burgenland, Austria (£12.49, half bottle, Waitrose) This is a stunningly composed wine from one of the smartest outfits in Austria. it’s not a full-blown sweetie but an elegant wine with finesse and control, made to match fruity puddings rather than rich, chocolatey ones.

2009 Tesco Finest Dessert Semillon, Australia (£6.79, half bottle, Tesco) This is made by semillon geniuses De Bortoli, who also make the noble One sweetie – this own-label version is a chip off the block.

NV Tio Pepe, Fino Sherry, Jerez, Spain (£10, Waitrose, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Cambridge Wine tel. 01223 568989, Majestic) Sherry is all about big brands and none are more famous than Tio Pepe. The flavour of this dry sherry is spot on with salty, tangy, citrus notes and a bone-dry finish. Drink it ice cold.

NV Sainsbury’s Winemaker’s Selection A Blend of Amontillado Sherry, Spain (£5.50, Sainsbury’s) A full bottle of an off-dry wine with nutty depth and figgy complexity and a tart finish. Available from mid-July.

2014 Moscatel/ Grenache Rosado, Valencia, Spain (£7, M&S) The frosted bottle and slightly kitsch typeface on the label might put you off this wine, but if you’re a fan of candyfloss-scented strawberry-kissed sweeties then this is a must-have. The sweetness is cleansing, not cloying.

NV Villa Jolanda, Moscato, Italy (£7, reduced to £5 until 17 June, Asda) i love genuinely grapey moscato so i can heartily recommend this frothy little number, because it has no trace of soapiness, just pure soda-siphoned juicy fruit. Oh, and the bottle looks a bit flashy too!

NV Campbell’s of Rutherglen Liqueur Muscat, Victoria, Australia (£12.49, half bottle, Waitrose) One of the finest Aussie liqueur muscats, this has dark honey, nut, brown sugar, rose petal and plum notes. This is the best wine for chocolatey puds.

NV Fonseca, Bin 27 Reserve Port, Portugal (£13.99, virginwines.co.uk, winesdirect.com) Fonseca Bin 27 is a trouper of a port which offers deep plum and berry fruit and a clean, savoury finish. it is not the heaviest style of port, so should appeal to keen amateur drinkers.

NV Hidalgo, Manzanilla Pasada Pastrana, Single Vineyard, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain (£12.99, Waitrose) Serve this definitive aperitif ice cold in small glasses and send your taste buds to heaven and back in one sip! it’s a phenomenal creation and i’ve given it a rare perfect score in my notes.

NV Taylor’s 10-year-old Tawny, Port, Portugal (£22, Waitrose, Booths, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco) Taylor’s makes my favourite tawny ports. This version is thrilling, with hazelnut, fig, plum, liquorice, raisin and toffee flavours resplendent in the glass. Serve it slightly chilled with elegant canapés.

NV M Signature Palo Cortado Sherry, Spain (£5.99, half bottle, Morrisons) like Sainsbury’s, Morrisons has nailed its sherry offerings this year. This half bottle of palo cortado has a deep, dark, nutty aroma and flavour which makes it incredibly exciting and complex on the palate.

NV M Signature Pedro Ximénez Sherry, Spain (£5.99, half bottle, Morrisons) A little lighter than the Sainsbury’s Pedro Ximénez, this is a brilliant, incredibly sweet wine with all of the boozy raisin and caramel notes you’d expect. Drink it with chocolate or toffee puddings with lashings of vanilla ice cream.

NV M Signature Premium Manzanilla Sherry, Spain (£5.99, half bottle, Morrisons) This is the driest style of sherry, and is served as a bone dry, raspingly refreshing aperitif. Morrisons’ version has a white-knuckle flavour with drama and poise. Enjoy chilled with tapas – it’s time for a fiesta!

2013 Brown Brothers, Orange Muscat & Flora, Victoria, Australia (£6.99, half bottle, Tesco) The world’s most famous orange muscat makes a welcome return to our shelves, with its beautiful mandarin aroma and honeyed palate. This is a fabulous wine to drink if you’re having chocolatey desserts.

NV Finest Reserve Port, Portugal (£12, M&S) This fruity, smooth and velvety wine is one of the best-value ports i’ve ever tasted. Beautifully proportioned with intense, sweet black fruit and stunning weight, it’s mellow, suave and mouth-filling.

NV Sainsbury’s Winemaker’s Selection Sweet Rich Cream Sherry, Spain (£5.50, Sainsbury’s) it may seem a little out of fashion to serve cream sherry, but if you chill this creature down it’s a stunning all-purpose sweet wine. Available from mid-July.

2014 Le Grand Ballon Rosé, Joël Delaunay, Touraine, Loire, France (£8.49, reduced to £6.79 from 10-30 June, Waitrose) i’m a huge fan of this wine, made from gamay, cabernet franc and malbec. Coming from a cooler loire Valley climate, this is a lean rosé with a coral colour and a refreshing palate.

2014 Château Barthès Rosé, Bandol, France (£10.99, Majestic) Bandol, situated in Provence between Toulon and Marseilles, is home to the finest rosés on the planet. This is a full-bodied, dry rosé which goes with rare beef salad, pesto and chilli sauces. it will transport you to the Riviera in one sip.

2014 M de Minuty, Côtes de Provence, France (£25 for 150cl, Majestic) if you did a double take when you saw the price of this wine, don’t worry – it’s a magnum price. Bottles (75cl) are also available at £14.99, or £9.99 each for two. Cherry-stone-scented with a crisp finish, this is a statement wine for showing off.

2014 Château de Berne Rosé, Côtes de Provence, France (£27.50 for 150cl, Majestic) Another magnum for your summer parties! Bottles are also available at £14.99, or £11.24 for two. The flavour even trumps Brad and Angelina’s famous Miraval Rosé.

2014 Famille Negrel, Côtes de Provence, Sainte Victoire Rosé, France (£9.99, Majestic) i buy a lot of negrel rosé for a restaurant i consult. This is one of their finest all-rounders on account of its refreshing qualities and food-matching capabilities. its broad repertoire and crowd-pleasing flavours make it a winner.

2014 La Fleur d’Amelie Rosé, Bordeaux, France (£10, M&S) This delightful, feather-light, hauntingly fragrant rosé is the perfect garden party wine. With its delicate redcurrant perfume and white wine freshness on the palate, it’s a drop-dead stunner.
