Today, the discussion of the Schengen Agreement continued heatedly in our committee: Justice and

Home Affairs Council.

The honourable delegates negotiated visa liberalization and the delegate of Belgium questioned the differ-

ence between visa globalization and visa liberalization. This debate was followed by the disputation of

starting a new moderated caucus. Thereafter, the delegates talked over The Draft Common Position which they prepared at the first session. First, they discussed the criteria for accession of new members

in the Schengen Area. Stable economic development was one of the most accentuated criteria. Then, they

talked over the main goals of the Schengen Agreement. The delegate of Netherlands emphasized the need

of an improved data base and high level of monitoring system for new members to stop the flow of illegal

immigration from external borders. The delegates of Germany, Greece and Latvia indicated their concerns about the funding for the implementation of the new ideas. Right after, the presumption of other ideas to

add The Draft Common Position Paper was excogitated. During the excogitation, our sympathetic dele-

gate of Slovenia said that he didn’t approve it, and he tore the paper.

After the discussions, The Draft Common Position Paper was put to vote. Only the delegate of Slovenia

said no and Ireland preferred to be absent. Interestingly, the delegate of UK hesitated very much, but

eventually she said yes. Ultimately, the paper was approved with the percentage of 92.25.

At the last session the crisis came. It was from a main news bulletin in Spain. The news was about the

Reflections of the Memorable EUROsimA Party

Last night’s party took place in

one of the luxurious entertain-

ment venues in Park Avenue: James Dean. The party was quite

at the beginning, since people

were not drunk enough. But then,

the party livened up. First, people

danced with DJ HIM’s songs and

had so much fun. In the second place was DJ Sonat from Istan-

bul. Unfortunately, his music did-

n’t appeal to the crowd, as people

complaint. But our skillful organi-

zation team solved this music problem immediately. :) Naturally,

DJ was not happy about this

warning and had to play Hip Hop

songs reluctantly. However, the

crowd was having more fun in

that way. Nevertheless, DJ didn’t leave the party disappointedly, since we talked to him- we met him before the party- and danced on the

stage next to him to cheer him up (our editor Sibel was dancing too :) ) We’d like to point out that one of

the greatest things James Dean offered was its seating in the garden, in which people who were ex-

hausted - because of dancing - can have a rest. At the end of the party, people left the party with tired

Interviews

Jess Bailey is coming from Sussex University, the UK. She is interested in migration issue for that

reason she decided to join EUROsimA for the first time as the representative of Greece in Justice and Home Affairs Committee.

When I asked her if it's her first time in Turkey I have learned that last summer she worked in Fethiye as

child animator (she said this in Turkish). As you can guess, Jess is learning Turkish and loves to

practice it in her free time after her work in Fethiye and with her Turkish friends in Brighton. She has

Turkish friends in Brighton because lots of Turkish people go there for English course and they hang out together. Jess also watches “Kuzey Güney” and loves it a lot. Although she watches it with English

subtitles she understands sometimes and becomes very happy when she can understand.

It was a sunny day in Ankara so we spoke about the weather. She said she cannot stay in England for a

long time because of the rainy whether even in summers. So it is very understandable that Jess went to

Malaysia to teach English when she was 18. After learning this, I asked her if she likes travelling or not

because as I observed that Europeans love it and start travelling so young. Her response “I went to India with my university in order to examine the geography there but together with a friends we decided to stay

in India longer to travel a little because it is a really different culture” explains everything.

As being both university students, the conversation came to issues like student houses and public

transportation. The thing that never changes regardless of where you are is that student houses are such

Taner Zorbay, a friendly academic from the Department of History, was very kind to have an interview

for EUROsimA Daily News. Firstly, he denoted that this was his first time in EUROsimA and he was

happy to be involved. While we were talking over his experience as an observer in EUROsimA 2012, he

sincerely said that he appreciated the organization, as it shows the feasibility of promoting such

organizations and it is an example for the followings. He added that surely there are some surmountable challenges students would encounter and they will be tired. He associated it with the wedding

ceremonies: They both are tiring till the end, but at the end all are happy. :) Besides, Mr. Zorbay

emphasized, it’s of capital importance that students have a chance to practice the knowledge they

acquired only in theory in the lectures. He also uttered that he will recommend EUROsimA to his college

students and will present it in his lecture’s slide of current events. Again, he already shared the

information about EUROsimA in his class’ Facebook Group. Lastly, he concluded our interview with one of his favourite sayings: You can be a king in theory, but what matters is if you are a king in practice.

After a nice party the committee wasn’t full. Some people weren’t able to wake up, some people are hang-

over. So it will be interesting to see how efficient this day will be. When I walked in the committee the

session wasn’t started but it seemed like it. Some people were already discussing about the communiqué.

This made me emotional because to see delegates’ this willing is just amazing. The committee is harden-

ing on finding a submitter for the communiqué. Hopefully this problem will be overcome as soon as pos-

sible. After a long unmoderated caucus the draft communiqué is ready in the European Council. For the

first time, there wasn’t even one motion or points for a while. This made the committee relax or maybe

get bored. The honourable guests Mr. Kizilbagli and Mr. Aksut came in to observe. I hope they like what

they see. Mr. Aksut mentioned that some countries will be moving to other committees. This made all of

us sad because we will not be all together anymore. The committee is discussing the amendments for a

while and something caught my eye during this process. When the subject gets serious some delegates

are ahead of the others. Only five or six delegates share their ideas about the subject. Because of this

matter the committee is started to slow down. So hopefully it will fasten again soon. At the same time

there is music coming from outside. I am a lucky guy because all the songs are nice so I am having fun.

Today, one of the most working delegates is Spain. The delegate is asking questions, giving speeches and

she seems like she will do anything to get her ideas accepted. Probably the chairs have noticed this. The

first time an amendment passes. Everyone cheers up with clapping loudly. One by one, amendment

started to get accepted. This is a good signal of a good communiqué. Ahmet Gürbüz / EC

A signal of good communique

Hi everyone! Today is an amazing day. At the beginning, all the delegates were very energetic and every-

one was talking to each other. I think, today we will have more fun. The committee of GAC started with

an unmoderated caucus of 15 minutes in order to discuss working paper 1.01. The delegation of Sweden

Gregor Dlmcy didn’t come to the committee, so there is no one to sleep :). I didn’t want to miss this dis-

cussion so I made an interview with the delegation of Finland Caner Yılmaz said “ We support the dele-

gate of France, we would like to Turkey for member of the EU, because we have good relations with Tur-

key. Especially in business area, also in tourism. In tourism area, Finnish people travel to Turkey every

year for summer holiday. Also, Turkey is very rich in farmer sector. This is why we have good business

about farmer sector. On the other hand, in communication sector we are marketing so many products to

Turkey”. This working paper was submitted by (Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Latvia,

Greece, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom) these countries. Following the session, delegates in

General Affairs Council have spend a lot more time on amendments than the time they spent on only

common position paper. The delegates wrote amendment then, they discussed statements of the working

paper 1.01. Some delegates were against but someone was in favour. Some delegates felt bad because of

the atmosphere. The United Kingdom and Spain proposed amendment to a knowledge Turkey as a mem-

ber of the European Union in 2013. This created a shock in the house. The United Kingdom statements

were so much caring for Turkey and its accession. On the other hand, France declared that if such a

blunt action is to registered on the paper, France and the EU releasing would be halted. After the voting

procedures it has been clear that Europe cannot give up on France. Amendment was failed. Some dele-

gates applaused when the amendment wasn’t accepted that was out of order. Many other amendments

were proposed and failed. In the end, countries faced an incredible moment when the common position

paper of France, UK, Spain, Germany, Latvia and many other submitters passed with no against votes.

News from GAC

Delegates looked like very tired after two full of action days but of course discussions did not stop also

today. The session started with working paper’s enunciation which includes passed two days’ summary

in the Saturday morning of EUROsimA. The delegates of Europe had difficulties to finish working paper

completely and they were not able to start a new topic, which is the dissolution of Yugoslavia (1990-

1995), as crucial as initial topic in 7 sessions. They also reminded their main point of views about the

discussion of Arab Spring. Basic of them were recommendation of the dialogue on formal bases with the

moderate Islamic Party, encourages the NGOs and democratic civil organizations to prevent human rights

abuses in the region, liberation of media, freedom of speech and free trade issue in the area.

Then, they certainly took attention on the shocking, unfortunate event which occurs in Damascus

against the Austria Embassy at about 3 o’clock in 27 April. That horrible action created a short term

chaos in the house and a rising in tension of the debate. There were various opinion on the bombing at-

tack against an embassy whose country is a member of the EU. Most of delegates, certainly German dele-

gate was still against a full scale intervention and focused on humanitarian side of the issue. In the For-

eign Affair Council, many stand against any possible forcibly intervention which although Ban Ki-moon,

who is the current Secretary- General of the EU, clarified that a military intervention became unavoid-

able after the last drop that was a very clear message from Bashar Al-Assad and his rule to Europe. In

that context, Spain, France and Austria delegates stated that a collaboration with the NATO and the EU

to bring stability back to the region. In addition, Greece delegation said that however military intervention

that we do not want to talk at the first line sounded disturbing, it is critical to humanize the situation in

Syria. The delegate also underlined the “common stand or action” against Bashar Al-Assad and his re-

gime which lead a case between Greece and France delegates. For France, there was a contradiction be-

tween the delegate’s ideas concerning that Greece was not favour of an armed intervention at the same

time it did not want a probable military intervention opposed to region . On the other hand, the United

Kingdom delegate emphasized help to refugee camps, economic, social, and material support for victims

in the territory rather than military intervention which according to the UK, actually the FAC was unable

to take an action in that point.

With the finish of the current topic of the FAC, we all hope to pass our historical topic, Dissolution of

Yugoslavia (the NATO and the EU summit) at last. Sultan Erbas / FAC

What makes EUROsimA a special Conference?

İ.C.A: Ankara, mainly Erman Aksüt and Levent Kızılbağlı and

followed by the entire academic and the organizing team.

What do you like the most about EUROsimA?

İ.C.A: That it is at Ankara

What are your expectations from the Conference in General

and from your Committee?

İ.C.A: I expect especially the Historical theme to be successful because it is an innovative and a great

idea which has never been tried before. Moreover, this my second from the last Conference before I retire

and I am chairing with two good friends. I expect to have as much as fun possible and produce a solic

final document as well.

What do you think about the future of EU?

İ.C.A: Enlarge your Europe 3 inches in 7 days.

In your opnion which colour describes EUROsimA the best?

İ.C.A: Yellow beacuse the Conference is a mellow.

If EUROsimA was to be a food or a fruit what would it be?

İ.C.A: Since it is yellow it would be a lemon. It is sour but I like sour.

What are the possitive impacts of the EUROsimA on both foreign and Turkish participants?

İ.C.A: It gives a detailed information to Turkish participants on how the EU bodies really functionand for

foreign participants it gives a different point of view about the EU from the outside of the EU.

E.S.: EUROsimA 2012 is my last Conference, that’s wht it so special for me.

What are your expectations from this year’s session?

E.S.: I expect to increase the number of participants which is actually a

dream that has already been achieved.

What do you think about the future of EUROsimA?

E.S.: I believe EUROsimA will become a more professional Conference, the

demand for the Conference and the quality will increase, and the context

will be enriched.


E.S.: Yellow because of the yellow stars in flag of the EU. EUROsimA is also like a shining star among the

other MUN Conferences.


E.S.: It would be a pomegranate because EUROsimA contains many small but delicious pieces in unity.

Those small pieces reflecting the participants.


E.S.: The foreign participants have a better change to enlarge their vision of Turkey. And they are

generally surprised by it because they see how Turkey is an adequate candidate for the EU membership.

In addition, Turkish participants improve their knowledge on European Union law adn Institutions.

An exhausting working paper

Today, the session has started with the speech of

European Central Park. The motion of the day was

the Eurozone. All day they have talked about the

Eurozone. All the delegates have sent message pa-

pers frequently. Therefore, the admin staff seemed

exhausted. The chairs of the Economic and Finan-

cial Affairs Council have warned the delegates for

going out of the room even without permission. To-

day, all the delegates have tried to find resolutions.

The delegate of China has worked on his working

paper. They have worked hard for their working pa-

pers. The first working paper of the Economic and

Financial Affairs Council has written by the dele-

gate of China. The second working paper has writ-

ten by Germany and France. Economic and Financial Affairs Council still have not got a resolution pa-

per. The delegate of the United Kingdom was angry about the situation. After the break the committee of

Economic and Financial Affairs Council has started with an unmoderated caucus of 10 minutes in order

discuss working papers. They went to the lunch late. Because they were still debating on the working pa-

per. Economic and Financial Affairs Council have spent 3 days for the working papers In my opinion,

they will share the resolution paper tomorrow. The chairs have come late to the fist session because of

the last night. The third day of the conference our committee’s place has changed by the academic team.

The organization team general director Levent Kızılbağlı has observed the Economic and Financial Affairs

Council frequently. Everyone seemed excited for the newspaper of the day. Many delegates have asked

me for the newspaper of the day. They said they have read it and they really liked it. As a press member

I’m proud of my team. All the press members have worked hard to make people happy. Therefore, that

excitement was like a present for us. I hope tomorrow would be more excited. Ece Tataroğlu / ECOFIN

What are your expectations from the Conference?

O.A: I am having the best time in EUROsimA so far due to the foreign

participation proportion. I hope to leave such a mark in the history of

EUROsimA that the succeeding sessions will take this year’s session as the

main reference point.


O.A.: I think it would be a Mediterranian salad with an olive oil as a dressing that combines all the

different tastes. Maybe sometimes with sweet and cheesy stuff. It would be a salad which is fresh and

good for health since EUROsimA is a happy organization. If it was to be a fruit it would be a kiwi. A kiwi

is tiny in its size but when you taste it something wonderful awaits you. In terms of its size EUROsimA

can be compared to a kiwi but it pledges a great experience.


O.A.: Although I study International Relations, two years ago being in GAC has contributed my

knowledge a lot. Therefore, I believe the Conference is a feast of an academic gain. Since European Union

is not as well-known as other international institutions for instance United Nations. EUROsimA’s main

attempt is to make the foreign participants further aware of Turkey, despite the negative image attached

to our beautiful country. Istanbul trip is one of the pillars of this story.
