MATERIALS

madelinetosh heritage wool Erin ~ 150 yards (138m) gauge: 4.5 stitches per inch

size 8 US (5mm) circular needle(s) or dpnscable needlestitch holder or length of scrap yarntapestry needle

DIRECTIONS

cast on 30 sts and join in the round; work *k2, p1* ribbing for 18 rounds, or about 2.5 inches

increase row: *k2, m1L, p1* twice, k2, p1, *k2, m1L, p1* four times, k2, p1, *k2, m1L, p1* twice= 38 sts from here onward, mitten is worked in cable pattern (below) for first 19sts of each round, and plain

stockinette (knit across) for the last 19 sts that make up the palm

thumb gusset (AT THE SAME TIME as working the cable pattern below):

right mitten:Row 1) place a stitch marker on either side of the third palm stitch (22nd st)

left mitten:Row 1) place a stitch marker on either side of the last palm stitch (38th st)

both mittens:

Row 2) when you get to the first marker, slm, m1R, k1, m1L, slmRow 3) knit across, slipping markers as you come to themRow 4) knit across, slipping markers as you come to themRow 5) when you get to first marker, slm, m1R, knit to next marker, m1L, slm

repeat rows 3-5 until you have 13 sts in between markers

Next row: when you get to first marker, place the 13 gusset sts on a holder or length of scrap yarn (removingmarkers), cast on one stitch, continue knitting in the round

take the 13 thumb sts off holder and place onto circular needle(s) or dpns join in the round, picking up 3 sts over the gap = 16 sts knit in the round for 2 inches or until the top of the thumbnail k2tog eight times, break yarn, thread yarn tail through remaining 8 sts and pull through

Weave in all yarn tails, wet block mittens into shape, and enjoy!
