Overview

Introduction

► 4 nationalized banks (Canara, Syndicate,Corporation, & Vijaya Bank) and anotherleading bank (Karnataka Bank) originatedfrom this region

► Cashew growing and processing is a majoractivity of this region

► Lumber– the wood related industries is amajor activity of this region.

► Of late, the region is importing large quantityof timber from South East Asia.

► Fish processing is also an important industryin the district

► Well known for Yakshagana- a fabulouscostumed dance drama form, Kambala- thesport of buffalo racing by farmers, Kori-katta(Cock Fight) and Bootha Kola

Dakshina Kannada was a part of the erstwhile Madras Presidency, before 1860. It isduring the resorganisation of states in 1956, that Dakshina Kannada was transferred toMysore state. The present day Dakshina Kannada district was formed in 1997.The district is famous for red clay roof tiles, cashewnut and its products, banking,education, and for its exotic cuisine.
