Out & About

Say ‘G’Day’ DayDalby’s 2014 ‘Say G’Day’ Day was held on Saturday, 25th January, in two spots – the busking area on Cunningham Street and in Dalby Shopping World.

Organised by Dalby Welcoming Community Committee, the purpose of the day is to be more a welcoming community in the lead up to Australia Day. Now in its fifth year, the group handed out ‘Say G’Day’ stickers and balloons, challenging recipients to ‘Say G’Day’ to someone who they didn’t know. Local artists, including the Reconciliation Choir, provided entertainment at both venues.

People out and about on the day, especially the children, enjoyed the stickers and balloons and many people commented that the day was a great idea.

Beth Wood

Myall Creek Parkland Opening, City SectionCoinciding with Dalby’s ‘Say G’day’ Day was the official opening of Myall Creek Parklands by Deb Frecklington, MP for Nanango, representing the Minister for National Parks, Recreation, Sport & Racing. The Parklands were then handed over to the Mayor of Western Downs Regional Council, Ray Brown, for the community.

Over the past 18 months, Dalby Welcoming Community Committee has been working to develop the City Section of the Myall Creek Parklands and has installed walking paths, gardens, a picnic shelter, picnic tables, barbecues, a toilet block, signage and an amphitheatre. With the support of Freemasons Qld, a children’s very popular playground has been installed in Marble Street.

At the opening, Dalby Welcoming Community Committee also unveiled their first Dalby Dudes, designed by local artist, Graeme McCullough, and now located in the newly developed Myall Creek Parklands. The three dudes depicting life in Dalby include: a Farming Dude, a Manufacturing Dude and an Exercise Dude.

When asked how all this came about, Beth Wood, Chair of Dalby Welcoming Community Committee, explained

that in 2008 when the Committee was formed to focus on the image and attractiveness of Dalby, a list of priorities was developed at a Community Forum – top of that list was to make Myall Creek a feature of the Dalby community.

The Committee received funding from QGC to have a master plan drawn up for Myall Creek and then the group began seeking funding to implement the plan. In 2010, Dalby Welcoming Community was a finalist in Qld Healthy Community Awards, winning $50,000 which enabled the exercise stations, near the indoor pool, to be installed.

The following year, the Dalby Welcoming Community won the Qld Healthy Community Award winning $750,000 and this money has been spent on the developments in the city section of Myall Creek. The Committee is very excited to see its plans come to fruition and to hear the positive comments from people in the community as they enjoy Dalby’s beautiful Myall Creek.

The Dalby Australia Day Celebrations were a little quieter this year. A combination of the long weekend and the rain during the previous days, although welcome, was a factor in the lower numbers. However, those who came were able to partake of a delicious breakfast due to the efforts of the Dalby Rotary Club.

Bob Minchin of the Rotary Club said that the Club had been serving breakfast for 27 years and the funds raised go into the charities that are supported by the Club. They have assisted the Palliative Care Unit at the Dalby Hospital and The Mens’ Shed has received funds to get it going. Overseas, Rotary has practically eliminated Polio and provided Disaster Assistance recently to the Philippines.

An initiative of Rotary has also been Shelter Boxes that are provided to disaster victims. The boxes contain materials such as food, water purifying and shelter.

Bob also acknowledged the support he received from the various sponsors and the volunteers who assisted.

Presented by Councillor Ian Rasmussen, the Citizen of the Year was Elaine Fox. The Junior Sports’ Achievement Winner was Dominique Holtkamp from the Dalby Pony Club. Cameron and Julie McKewan from the Dalby Shooting Club were the winners of the Senior Sports Award and the winners of the Community Event Award deservedly were the Dalby Relay for Life for Cancer Committee.

A Note From the EditorIt’s hard to believe March is here already, it feels as though the year has just begun, yet here we are almost at Easter again! With March of course comes the change of season, the start of Autumn and hopefully some cooler weather, maybe even some rain if we’re lucky!

This month we have a wonderful story from one of our new contributors, Chantahl Stedman, who has written a story on the very talented photographer, Scott Bridle. You will see some of his amazing photographs and read all about his story on pages 14 - 15 of this edition.

The Queensland Ambulance Service Dalby recently celebrated one hundred years of service to the town’s community and surrounding rural areas, and you will find some great photographs and editorial from this weekend, which coincided with Say ‘G’Day’ festivities and the opening of the Myall Creek Parkland, City Section.

There are also some great competitions in this month’s magazine, with tickets for Calendar Girls and The Phantom of the Opera up for grabs, as well as our usual Pet of the Month Competition!

Enjoy your first Autumn Edition of the Dalby Harvest for 2014.

Queensland Ambulance Service - A Centenary of Service to the Dalby CommunityThe Queensland Ambulance Service Dalby has proudly serviced the town’s community and surrounding rural areas for one hundred years.

Dalby’s Local Ambulance Committee chose to celebrate their special occasion on Saturday, 25th January, 2014, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Dalby Ambulance Station, 154/156 Cunningham Street, Dalby.

The Committee invited Acting Assistant Commissioner, Mr Glen Maule, to open the event, and Mayor Mr Ray Brown to be Guest Speaker on the day.

The Local Ambulance Committee and staff were on hand to welcome all who attended and to answer any questions.

Mr Chris Hanna from Queensland Wildlife Conservation Service undertook wildlife safety talks. I was looking for Snake Safety Awareness information and appropriate actions to be considered by members of the community when they are confronted.

Chris used a PowerPoint display, and spoke to open groups, with active interactions with the community members on the day. Chris also included colouring in options for the children.

We were able to display many different types of old and new equipment (including vehicles / stretchers etc).

We estimated that over 100 persons attended on the day.

I thank very much all who assisted. Their efforts made the day a success!

Pay Your Water Bill Earlyand SaveWestern Downs Regional Council's 11,000 water customers can save 10 per cent if they pay their bill before Wednesday 12 March.

Spokesperson for Corporate Support Councillor Ian Rasmussen said residents will be receiving their water consumption notice in the mail this week and customers are encouraged to take advantage of the several convenient payment methods and discount on offer.

“The half-yearly water consumption notices for July to December 2013 have now been issued and if customers settle their accounts in full on, or before, the due date of 12 March they will receive a 10 per cent discount," he said.

"Council offers a number of easy and convenient payment methods to help with payment, including electronic payments. But please be mindful that water notices are separate to rates notices so they have different biller codes. If you're paying electronically be sure to refer to the front of your water consumption notice to use the correct details.

"If however customers feel they might have difficulty paying on time, they can simply contact our Customer Contact Centre before 12 March for help in arranging an instalment plan."

Customers with any questions about their water notice can contact Council on 1300 COUNCIL (1300 268 624) during office hours.

Australia Day Award for Relieving Taroom ParamedicAlong with four other Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) recipients across the State, Kendall Cox was humbled to receive a Certificate of Achievement as part of the Australia Day Awards last month.

While acting in the Taroom Officer-in-Charge position for seven months, Kendall was recognised for his high achievements in pre-hospital healthcare, by implementing strategies towards better care for Queenslanders in medical need.

Kendall’s work in re-establishing the Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) and recruiting volunteer ambulance drivers has made a lasting impact on the Taroom Community, and will no doubt ensure a more robust frontline service.

“Regional towns, like Taroom, rely on the community to step up and look out for one another. By re-establishing these vital volunteer services, community safety is greatly enhanced,” he said.

“Volunteers, like LAC President - Mr Murray Dingwall, Secretary - Mrs Ann Foster and Treasurer - Mr Bill Hickey, their fellow members and our volunteer drivers will make a world of difference to the service and to the Community alike.”

Young Farmers’ Challenge Hits 2014 Dalby Show!Have you got the skills to change a tyre, crack a whip or save a calf? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these, then you are who we are looking for. For the first time, at the 2014 Dalby and District Show, a Young Farmers’ Challenge is being held as part of the Friday night entertainment on 11th April.

The Young Farmers’ Challenge has been run at Royal Shows such as Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide with great success. Originally designed to increase awareness among more urban communities about what is involved with day to day farming, the Young Farmers’ Challenge is now being used as

an entertainment piece at many small rural shows. The Challenge comprises of an obstacle course in which 8 teams of 4 people will compete against each other in two heats, with the two winning teams competing for the inaugural title of 2014 Dalby Show Young Farming Champions.

The Young Farmers’ Challenge is not just for young farmers. Anyone between the age of 18 to 40, male or female, are encouraged to put a team together and come and have some fun, with a chance of winning $1000 in prize money. Some light sabotage is encouraged, but in all, it’s about getting younger

people back to the Show and showcasing what the Dalby community is all about - Agriculture.

None of this, however, would be happening without the assistance of our sponsors, so we would like to thank: Suncorp, Darling Downs Cotton Growers Inc and Advanced Motors for their generosity and support. Nominations are being taken now, so if you think this challenge is for you, please contact either Liz Lobsey (0409 649 567) or Brad Smith (0401 699 888) or email [email protected]

Belief in YouthLions Dalby has been supporting the MILO in2CRICKET for eleven years as part of its focus on its belief in the strength and future of Dalby youth. The MILO in2CRICKET Program is Australian Cricket’s entry level program that is run by Clubs and Associations across the country. It teaches children the basic skills of cricket in an environment that is fun, safe and most importantly, promotes a healthy lifestyle where children develop social skills and make new friends.

Iconic Australian cricketers such as Mitchell Starc and Ellyse Perry are just two players who have progressed from this program to Representative Cricket.

Dalby Lions, Ian and Lorraine Monaghan, Glenn Shipway and Peter Brown give up their Saturday

mornings for the six week period, before and after the school holidays, to deliver the program at the playing ovals at Dalby South State School. As the 2013/14 summer in2CRICKET draws to a close, we have seen another enthusiastic group of children, parents and grandparents attend and have fun, enjoy the fresh air and just perhaps, we may have seen future Queensland or Australian players on the cricket pitch.

As this youth project draws to a close this season, another of our iconic youth programs, Youth of the Year, is in full swing. Next month, I will be able to report on Dalby’s Youth of the Year 2014.

Until then, don’t forget to have a chat to us at the Saturday BBQ at Harvey Norman, Patrick Street.

Chamber ChatTo say it’s been hot in February is an understatement! These long hot dry spells cause us to turn our thoughts once again to the plight of our families and friends in Rural Queensland who are doing it tough.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a long term grazier who has a property south of Roma the other day. He told me what they needed the most are friends to lean on. Our farmers are a tough, proud and resilient bunch, but like us, it’s good to get a call just to say “G’day mate, how are you going”?

I also had the pleasure of attending a meeting in Wandoan of the Regional Chambers of Chinchilla, Tara, Miles, Wandoan and Jandowae along with representatives of the Western Downs Regional Council, QGC and the Queensland State Government. This is a really great forum for sharing ideas, problems and solutions that confront all of us in our region.

The Chamber Executive has almost completed our Strategic Planning Workshops that will assist us in determining the way forward for our Chamber over the next couple of years. The facilitators, Social

Ventures Australia, have been assisting a number of the Downs Chambers in finding new direction and structure on how to best represent and serve our members. We must remain ever vigilant in staying relevant and continuing to understand and meet the rapidly changing needs of our community.

As reported last month, out training programs have recommenced including the Business Capability Workshops and Business Health Checks (These services provided by DCCI are funded by the Australian Government. For further details, call the Chamber on 4662 4050).

Our next Business Before Hours Breakfast is to be held on 14th March at the Dalby Leagues Club commencing at 7:00am.

Finally, congratulations to Dan Carmody of Stimson Plumbing who received February’s Exception Service Award from our Award Sponsor, Carrick Aland Accountants...well done Dan.

Dalby Meals on WheelsDalby Meals on Wheels staff were delighted when Dietician and Queensland Meals on Wheels Nutritional Advisor, Angela Malberg, gave their menus her seal of approval. Angela was delighted with the variety and nutritional balance that was available to clients through the Dalby menu. The majority of clients also seem happy with the choices available on the 8 week cycle of menus.

Dalby Meals on Wheels has been chosen as one of two services in Queensland to trial free milk for clients. As part of this trial, clients will be offered free milk for a period of one month, in order to boost their calcium intake. It has been found that many older people suffer from poor nutrition and that calcium, in particular, is lacking in their diets, leading to osteoporosis, fractures and hospitalisation. Medicare is sponsoring this trial

and Griffith University students will be analysing the results. Queensland Meals on Wheels hopes to use the results of the trial to obtain additional funding from the Federal Government in order to provide free dairy products to clients on a permanent basis.

Brisbane Broncos in DalbyAnother great day for all who attended! Thanks to Arrow Energy for organising the day again and a big ‘thank you’ to the Broncos for taking time out of their busy schedule to come and spend time in the country. There are plenty of Bronco’s fans out

this way who love to see their sporting idols. All the Dalby Devil’s players are primed for a big season after such a great day.

Touch Season Forges AheadMonday, 10th February saw the opening round of mixed touch fixtures being played at the Mary Barry Touch fields. Mixed Touch has had strong numbers for many years and this season is no different with 30 teams nominating for the season ahead. Nominations exceeded expectation in the Ladies Division with ten nominations received and the Mens competition remains solid with twelve nominations received. Kim Flegler, Competition Coordinator, said, “The season will commence with three rounds of grading matches and then teams will have eleven competition rounds before finals commence. ”

Dalby Touch has been operating for over thirty years and the committee aims to provide the game of Touch Football in a fun, social, fitness environment. Our player base includes people from five years to 60 years and ranges from groups of friends to corporate teams. The size of our competition means there are competitive and social divisions, so you play with teams at a similar level to you. Whilst touch may have been born out of rugby league and rugby union, it has developed into a sport in its own right where there is a big emphasis on running and agility, with hand passing and catching as key skills.

For further information on Touch Football, contact Gayle on 0408 062 217 or visit the foxsportspulse website.

Harold Robison experienced both those, as the inability of a New South Wales player led him to be selected in the Australian Rugby League team to tour New Zealand, England, and France in 1937. He had missed selection in a tour of New Zealand because of injury in 1935.

Harold “Boof” Robison, son of Mr and Mrs T Robison, received the news by telephone on the Tuesday night and he had to leave by rail motor on Wednesday. In honour of the occasion, the boys in the upper classes of the Dalby State and High School, of which ‘Boof’ was an ex-pupil, marched to the railway station and presented a letter of congratulations from the head teacher, Mr A White, BA., that stated, “On behalf of the boys and girls and teaching staff of your old school, I offer our sincere congratulations on your selection for the touring Rugby League team. Everyone is delighted that a pupil of this school has been given such a well-deserved honour. We believe that your talents are of such a high standard that you will bring nothing but credit to the town and State. Through your selection we will take a keen and personal interest in the team. With very best wishes.” This tribute was a surprise and was greatly appreciated by Mr Robison as was the one from Rev. Monsignor T J. Nolan on behalf of friends and admirers. The Downs Timber Company’s sawmill workmates presented him with a travelling rug and Mr CG Knowles wished ‘Boof’ a happy trip and was sure that he would fulfill everything that was expected of him because in his own experience of him that was the case. Mr Robison expressed his appreciation to Mr Knowles for allowing him time off work to play football in Toowoomba.

It was in 1929; Harold began his football career playing with St. Joseph’s Club, Dalby. The following year he graduated to the A grade team with which he played as a full back until 1934 when he accepted an offer to play in Toowoomba. It was during that year that his potentialities, as a three-quarter were realised. During the 1934 season he played in Toowoomba in Bulimba Cup matches; with the Valley team on Saturday afternoons; and continued to play in Dalby on Sunday afternoons. He also made his debut in inter-State matches when he played for Queensland against New South Wales in Brisbane. The Toowoomba team with which he played in 1935 defeated both Brisbane and Ipswich in Bulimba Cup games. It was during this season that he toured North Queensland with the Southern Queensland team and New South Wales with the Queensland team. He again

stripped in 1936 with the Toowoomba team, which won the Bulimba Cup, and the Rankin Cup. The latter was a trophy played for between Ipswich and Toowoomba. He represented Queensland in two matches against New South Wales in Sydney. He also

reappeared in Dalby playing for the Colts against his old team St. Joseph’s in 1936.

Mr. Harold Robison, a quiet modest man, at 24 years of age was the first Dalby native to gain international honours in League football. He left school at 14 and found employment with Chapman’s Newsagency, later accepting a position at the Downs Timber Co. Ltd. where he worked for four years before his selection in the Australian team. He experienced sailing on the “Arawa” on the high seas to England via New Zealand leaving on July 31, and arriving 17 September. The results of the matches have been hard to find but no doubt they are there if one has to time to search.

Police ReportDalby Police report that there have been:

• 5 x unlawful entries of motor vehicles

• 20 x break and enters, five of those committed by the same offender who was from Brisbane. He has since been caught and remanded in custody to appear in court at a later date.

• 2 x drink drivers – both were in the low range of between .05 - .1.

• Armed robbery on the 13th February at the Super Cellars in Condamine Street, with offender armed with an iron bar. The whole cash register was taken. He has since been caught and charged.

The Dalby Police would like to remind all Dalby residents to be extremely vigilant with locking their cars and homes. There have been many ‘soft breaks’ which means people have been inside their homes whilst someone has walked in and taken handbags etc, as the doors have not been locked,. Dalby Police urge residents to take care in securing homes.

Tricia Brings Out the Best in Country KidsTricia Robinson grew up in a country town of 200 people but in her role as a Kumon Instructor at Kumon Toowoomba West Education Centre, she is part of a worldwide community that is over 4 million people strong and still growing.

A mother of three, Tricia discovered Kumon when she enrolled her youngest daughter in the programme at an early age. “I wanted to eliminate the stress of school from my daughter’s life. I saw the benefits of it, both academically and how my daughter developed as a person, and that’s when I

looked into becoming a Kumon Instructor.”

Like her students, Tricia’s journey with Kumon has changed her for the better. “I was always very comfortable with being average but after being with Kumon for all these years, the students have shown me that it’s not hard to be above average and it’s more rewarding. I don’t settle for average anymore,” she said.

With 16 years of experience instructing children of all ages and abilities in the fundamentals of maths

and English right through to advanced calculus and reading comprehension, Tricia still finds her role rewarding. “What surprises me with the Kumon Programme is how advanced children can be in their learning when they put in consistent work. The smiles from the students and the confidence it builds in them just makes me feel good.”

They say they breed them tough in the bush but really I think we breed them brilliant…well that’s the case when you mention the name Scott Bridle. Scott is a born and bred Glenmorgan boy raised at Erambie. His appreciation for nature and the bush was implanted into him from day one by his mother and father as they taught him about the magnificence and splendour that the bush had to offer. With his mother as an artist there is no doubt that Scott “grew up immersed in art” and before long his mother gave him another artistic medium to turn his hand at, photography. Leaving home at age 20 set for the stations up north with camera in hand, Scott embarked on a journey of majestic beauty and admiration. He spent 15 years as a stockman snapping away before graduating to the skies as a pilot. This different angle opened the doorway for Scott in to a new world of photographic opportunities. He spent 10 years in the air before returning to the district with ample images that left the masses in awe. Scott delighted in seeing the pleasant expressions as people looked on through his photos which lead him to compiling his recent book “Outback”. From here Scott decided to try his hand at a bit of healthy competition by entering the BHP Billiton Cannington Waltzing Matilda Photographic Competition. He began his success in this area taking out first place in the Colour Print section in 2010 and more recently again in 2013 with his image (pictured) Jordan’s Woolshed Brenda.

Scott continues his passion for photography right here in the Western Downs and is now based in Meandarra with his newly established helicopter business specialising in contract mustering, feral animal control and aerial photography. With his love for the bush, Scott has also developed a special talent for the odd portrait or two. He is currently building his photographic portfolio in order to release another book and plans to do a

few more trips out west before its completion. Scott’s current book “Outback” can be found at all leading book stores or on his website www.scottbridle.com; for bookings and enquiries please contact Scott on 0429 674 114 or Fairway Studios, Goondiwindi. For those that are interested in photography or would even like to just give it a go, Scott will be judging the Photography section at the Tara Show on the 8th March. And just to be sure he never misses an opportunity, Scott “always has his camera with him” no matter where his travels may lead.

The Queensland Curtis LNG Project will be the world’s first project to turn natural gas from coal seams into liquefied natural gas, or LNG.

The project, which has been under construction since 2010, will provide cleaner energy for export markets from 2014.

This major integrated project involves:

• expansion of QGC’s natural gas production in the Surat Basin of southern Queensland;

• 5 4 0 km, 1m- diame ter pipeline network from the gas fields to Curtis Island, off Gladstone; and• an LNG plant on Curtis Island.

As construction advances, QGC is commissioning key components of the project.

The QCLNG pipeline team

celebrated ano ther key milestone on 16 December 2013 with first gas piped from the Surat Basin gas fields to the LNG plant at Curtis Island.

Arrival of first gas on to the island enables commissioning to begin on the first of two LNG production units, known as trains, being developed as part of the project.

Construction of the LNG plant and other key facilities is well under way.

QCLNG projects are gathering momentum in the most s ou ther l y o f our thre e development areas, near Dalby, which is critical to production of first LNG. Three of the six field compression stations being constructed in this area are being commissioned.

The projec t remains on schedule for first LNG in 2014.

Community Fund provides another A$550,000 to local projects

QGC has provided a further A$550,000 to 19 community projects through the latest round of its Sustainable Communities Fund. Funding granted in the sixth round includes about A$305,000 to 12 groups in the Western Downs and about A$245,000 to seven groups in Gladstone.

QGC Vice President Sustainability Brett Smith said the donations supported communities across southern Queensland.

“By lending a hand to hard-working community groups, in addition to longer-term projects in health, housing, employment and training, we are helping to mitigate the impact of our Queensland Curtis LNG Project,” Brett said.

T h e Q G C S u s t a i n a b l e Communities Fund has provided A$4.6 million to 145 short-term, one-off projects since it began in 2011.

Gladstone Youth Orchestra musicians, from left, Rowan Ward, Merin Ward, Jett Fallon and Paris Fallon are eagerly awaiting the arrival of new percussion instruments and a purpose-built equipment trailer that will make travel to events easier in the future.

14,500 people on our team QGC’s latest six-monthly report to Queensland’s Coordinator- General on Australian industry participation shows that QGC and its major contractors currently employ 14,500 people.

This means we have hired more than 15 people every day during the past year. QGC’s investment in construction, exploration and operations since January 2010 has now topped A$19.4 billion.

We invested about A$16.3 billion – or 84% – with Australian firms.

About A$13.2 billion, or 68% of

the total, went to Queensland companies.

QGC Managing Director Derek Fisher said more than 118,800 Australian companies had registered interest in doing business with QGC since 2010.

“A snapshot of current contrac ts shows we are investing nearly A$920 million in Gladstone and about A$915 million in the Western Downs region,” Derek said.

The number of training courses for our staff and contractors totalled 36,100, with a focus on safety skills.

Gardening

Gardening Tips for MarchAfter the heat and humidity that we have been having, your roses may be starting to look a bit out of shape. It is a good idea to prune any stray branches and fertilise them with ‘sudden impact for roses’ to keep them going.

Petunias, alyssum and lobelia can be planted now to get a good autumn show. It is also a good time to start preparing garden beds for winter planting, by mixing the soil with a slow release fertiliser and gypsum. Winter flowering plants include pansies, sweet peas, foxgloves and larkspur, just to name a few.

If you have a vegetable garden, then towards the end of March is the ideal time to prepare a section of the garden so it is ready for your winter vegetables, such as cauliflower, broccoli, onions, peas, cabbage etc.

Don’t forget to visit Dalby Landscapes’ Facebook page or drop in and see our friendly staff at 15 Hospital Road, if you would like any further gardening advice.

Travel

Visit the Bunya MountainsBunya Nuts are falling and there are an awful lot of them this year. The trees are loaded and bunya cones are littering the ground. Driving is interesting at present – dodging bunya cones. Some cones are huge, weighing up to 10kg, with the majority around 6 – 8kg. Bunya cones mostly fall at night but the crashing sound of branches being broken and the thud as the cone hits the ground echoes around the mountain even during the day.

All chalets are fully self-contained and range from one bedroom up to five bedrooms. Our smallest chalet accommodates two people in cosy privacy; the largest chalet accommodates the whole family and extended family (up to 22 people). Prices are very affordable. Your chalet can be nestled within the rainforest, perched on striking escarpments overlooking the Darling Downs or South Burnett or you can enjoy stunning rainforest views close to the walking tracks. Lock your car and forget it while you are enjoying the Bunya Mountains – all accommodation is within walking distance (maximum 2km radius) to all amenities including walking tracks, coffee shops and restaurants. Try a bunya burger or bunya nut scones with a cappuccino at “Poppies on the Hill”. Stay at least two nights to fully explore the magic of Bunya Mountains.

Bunya Mountains is a cool place with crisp clean invigorating mountain air. We are usually five to seven degrees cooler that the surrounding plains all year round. Please bring appropriate warm clothing, even in summer!

We know the days can be long and a farmer’s work is never done.

Walking in Your Shoes There’s an old saying "You can't really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes”. Last month members of the BMO Team hit the road to get a better sense of just what it’s like to be in the shoes of farmers and business owners across our region.

The stories aren’t new to us. Most of the BMO Partners have grown up on farms and even still work on them, we’ve helped in our families’ businesses, we’ve invested and we’ve borrowed. We’ve been young and carefree, we’ve studied, and we’ve travelled. We’ve had health crises. We’ve lost loved ones. We’ve had families. We get what it’s like to try and put a child through school while praying for the rains to come. And we’ve had good times too, like winning a big contract or having a good day on the golf course. BMO has worked with clients across a range of industries for more than 24 years.

Importantly though, even though we’ve had

similar experiences to our clients, we know that we will never assume at the outset what it’s like to be them. To do that, we have to walk alongside them and listen. It’s part of our team values at BMO – our value of “understanding” is about respect and good manners, being open and honest, and committed to listening.

It goes right back to ancient Greece. Plato once said: “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle”. That is why we’ve launched a new campaign called “We’re with you every step of the way”. It means more than just walking beside our clients and advising them, it’s about being “with them”; providing a service that’s not dictatorial – but more like a partnership.

During February, we were out on the road travelling to Taroom, Miles, Condamine, Dirranbandi, Moonie and back to Dalby visiting clients and presenting our “The Farmer Wants a Life” seminars. One thing that really struck us

was that no matter how bad the conditions were out in these communities, everywhere we went we were taken aback by the positive spirit of our farming communities. In amongst the desperate need for rain, there were signs of progress and excitement. More than 150 guests came along to the sessions to talk with us about succession planning, business structures, tax tips, government incentives, aged care, employing people, communication and about being aware of the signs of and effects of stress.

We know all too well the many challenges all of our local small businesses are facing – not just farmers but service industry, manufacturing, transport and retail. We know that everyone’s wearing a different pair of shoes… Sometimes the path is smooth and sometimes it’s bumpy. Some are skipping through while others are dragging their feet.

The Need for SleepIn last month’s magazine edition you may have learnt a thing or two about sugar and hopefully you have started on your journey of change. This month we are going to focus on another topic that can vastly affect your health, and that is sleep. Firstly, lets test how well you are sleeping with a simple questionnaire. For more than two weeks have you…

• Had trouble getting to sleep?• Been sleeping for fewer hours than usual?• Had poor quality of sleep?• Been tossing and turning at night?• Been waking up regularly during the night?• Been feeling sleepy most of the day?

If you answered yes to any of these then you are not alone. About 15% of Australians are estimated to suffer regular sleep difficulties and another 20% claim to suffer occasional problems sleeping. However, having a good night of sleep is important for maintaining good health. The body uses sleep to recharge from the day’s activities. In addition to this we need quality sleep which is not necessarily a long sleep. Lack of sleep or quality sleep can lead to irritability, lack of energy, poor concentration, fatigue, dizziness, slow reaction time, aches and pains, reduced immune function, decreased general well-being, hallucinations and increased risk of mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Some common sleep problems and disorders include insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy and sleep apnoea.

Some tips to improve your sleep

In the Morning

• Get out of bed as soon as you wake. Don’t go back to sleep.• Get up at the same time each morning.• Go outside into the fresh air• Do some form of physical activity, like going for a walk.

During the Day

• Do not take naps.• If you are worrying about problems then make time to address them so that

your mind is free of worry and thoughts at night.• Monitor your sleep hours and awake hours by using a diary.• Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea or energy drinks and at

worst avoid consuming any caffeine after 4pm.• Exercise.

At Night

• Try to go to bed at the same time each night.• Use low light when getting ready for bed; this signals the brain to wind down.• Try to keep all electrical items out of your bedroom. Some studies have

shown that electricity can interfere with brain activity during sleep.• If you have trouble getting to sleep then do a low energy and low stimulation

activity before going to be such as reading or sewing. Avoid mobile phones or television as they cause too much stimulation.

• Also listening to relaxing music can help clear your mind.• Ensure your bedroom is quiet, comfortable and dark.

Sleep Tight!

DehydrationDehydration is the loss of body fluids e.g. urine, vomit, diarrhoea and sweat.

How do we stay hydrated?

• Regular intake of water and electrolytes from foods.• Approximately 60% of our body weight is fluid• Our body requires the correct balance of water and electrolytes• Electrolytes are mineral salts which derive from our foods (Sodium,

Potassium and Chloride)• The primary function of sodium and chloride is to retain our fluid and

potassium to assist with our nerve and muscle function• Every day we lose water and electrolytes from our body (via urine,

sweat, breath, bodily secretions)• When we are well this process is controlled so the balance is

maintained.• When we are not well (vomiting, diarrhoea, heavy sweating, not eating)

this process is not easy to control and a state of dehydration may occur.

Causes of Dehydration

• Vomiting and diarrhoea (loss of body fluids and reduced intake of food and fluids)

• Vigorous exercise (loss of sweat)• Travelling (travelling diarrhoea/ long haul flights/ climatic changes)• Hot conditions (loss of sweat)• Working in hot conditions (loss of sweat)• Excessive alcohol (diuretic effect)

Other dehydrating conditions caused by lack of food and fluid intake such as:

• Morning sickness• Colds and fever• General ill health• Migraines/headaches

Signs of Dehydration

Warning signs of mild to moderate dehydration:

• Decreased urine output (or darker in colour than usual)• Lethargy• Headache• Dry mouth• Loss of skin elasticity (white marks will appear if pinched)• Sunken eyes• Rapid body weight loss of 2% to 7%

Dehydration may not always be evident. For these reasons, young children and the elderly are more at risk of involuntary dehydration.

Medical Advice

Seek medical advice if diarrhoea persists for more than:• 6 hours for infants under 6 months• 12 hours for children under 3 years• 24 hours for children aged between 3 and 6 years• 48 hours for adults and children over 6 years.

For all your supplies of electrolyte replacements, come and visit the helpful staff at Dalby & District Friendly Society Dispensary.

Question: Should I be using generic over the counter reading glasses?

New research has revealed that over the counter reading glasses with identical magnification in each eye may put old people at risk of a fall and impact on quality of life and even life expectancy.

The main reason for this is that as we get older there is a greater prevalence of anisometropia (difference between the two eyes). This condition is ten times more likely in people over 75 years old compared to children.

Generic over the counter reading glasses don’t account for these differences. Appropriate correction of both eyes is especially important as we get older and less stable on our feet.

Closing the Gap in Health EqualityNational Closing the Gap Day focuses on making a contribution to a fairer, better Australia – one that says no to health inequality, injustice and discrimination.

Darling Downs South West Queensland (DDSWQ) Medicare Local is committed to supporting the delivery of culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across our communities. DDSWQ Medicare Local staff work closely with medical practices across the Darling Downs and South West to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be connected with the health services they need to stay healthy.

On National Closing the Gap Day, 20 March 2014, DDSWQ Medicare Local is hosting a free event in conjunction with the Tara Medical Centre to help close the gap on life expectancy among local Indigenous community members.

The event will take place at the Tara Medical Centre from 10:30am, and will include free health information, blood pressure and glucose checks, and a sausage sizzle provided by the Tara Men’s Group.

Those who attend the event will be offered the chance to go in the draw to win a “deadly” jersey.

The day will also include a talk from former rugby league player and State of Origin great, Colin Scott. Colin will speak about practical ways to look after your health and his personal health experiences.

It is hoped that by holding this event Indigenous members of Tara and surrounding communities will have a better understanding of their health and ways to improve it.

Murphy Pipe & Civil Donates to a Great Cause

The Breast and Prostate Cancer Association of Queensland (BPCAQ) was presented with a donation of $20,000 at the Chinchilla Medical Practice at 58 Middle Street Chinchilla on Thursday 23rd January.

Glenn from Murphy Pipe and Civil presented the cheque to our local

committee members Joanna Embry of Chinchilla and Ann Gibbons of Miles along with Dr Saba Alessawy from the Chinchilla Medical Practice. BPCAQ will utilise this amazing donation to provide patient financial assistance grants for those undergoing Breast or Prostate Cancer treatment in the region.

The Breast and Prostate Cancer Association is a volunteer managed charity that provides funding for support and services to sufferers living in rural and regional Queensland. From patient assistance grants to funding breast and prostate care nurses to research and patient information booklets, our volunteers are dedicated to raising funds for initiatives that will help patients directly.

We are extremely grateful to Murphy Pipe and Civil who have donated this money to assist us in providing funds for patient care and services directly for Chinchilla, Miles and surrounding districts. We have general financial assistance and accommodation assistance grants available. Please contact our office at [email protected], the Chinchilla Medical Centre, local breast care nurses Maree Wylie in Dalby, Ros Melmeth in Kingaroy, Marion Strong and Bronwyn King, or any of the breast or prostate care nurses in Toowoomba, if you would like to access this assistance.

The PHANTOM of the OPERAFar beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, the Phantom lives his shadowy existence. Shamed by his grotesque physical appearance he lurks in the misty catacombs beneath the Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over its occupants, but the love he holds for his beautiful protégée, innocent soprano Christine is too strong even for her heart to resist.

The 2014 Empire Theatres major production, The Phantom of the Opera, presented by Heritage Bank, is a timeless story of seduction, despair and obsession as The Phantom’s fixation on Christine unleashes a tale of drama, destruction and death.

Don’t miss your chance to enjoy Andrew Lloyd Webber’s international award winning musical, as this unique theatrical experience, featuring the haunting score including Think of Me, Angel of Music, Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade and The Phantom of the Opera is brought to life on the Empire Theatre stage from April 3-13.
