Background to Kickstart

• Kickstart – Started 1996 with 2 mopeds.• 2003 Registered Charity and Company.• 2008-10 Lottery Funded 3 years.• 2009-11 Work Programme running alongside

Kickstart subsidising the moped scheme.• 2008-10 – 75% funded• 2011 – 45% funded• 2012-13 – 5% funded• 2014 – Onwards looks likely 0% funding

Background to Me• 1986 – Joined Forces at 16.• 2009 – Left Forces.• 2009 – 11 – Workshop manager for agricultural

firm.• 2011 to date – Kickstart• Prior to leaving Forces no experience in

Commercial or Voluntary sectors.• Quickly learnt financial workings of a company

over the two years 2009-11.• Project Manager Kickstart 2012.

Kickstart’s Bid Experience

• Historically they have bid to large organisations for large grants to get long term funding which has allowed us to get to where we are today.

• 2010-12 – Long term funding and large grants still bid for. At least 50-60 bids per year placed but success was 1-2 grants of relatively small amounts.

• 2012 to date only three bids submitted.

My Grant Bid Experience

• Prior to joining Kickstart nil.• Have attended 3 events organised by

Voluntary Norfolk.• Have attended National Grant bids events

organised by Big Lottery in London and Cambridge.

• Have applied for 3 Grants only one was successful, one was rejected and one is pending.

Researching Funders/Trusts

• The Directory of Grant Making Trusts 2012-13 £125 approximately, or free from library.

• The Guide to The major Trusts 2012-13 Vol 1 & 2. Approximately £75 each, or free from library.

Researching Funders/Trusts

• What have they funded before.• What are the future plans.• Who is on their boards.• What amounts have they funded before.• Look at their Annual Accounts and websites.• Call and discuss possibility of funding first.

Submitting Bids• Complete all Paperwork correctly using the funders

guidelines.• Send all paperwork to funder in plenty of time. (Not on

deadline day).• Do not try to pull on the heart strings too much.• Be honest.• Be thorough.• Do not ask for more than you need and keep it

relatively simple. • Do not chase your application but try to invite them to

visit your site and look at what you do.
