    4-H Camp Opportunities

    Cattlemen’s Scholarship & Beef Queen Contest

    Dallas County Cattlemen will sponsor scholarships for 4-H members who are in 12

    th grade and show cattle.

    The cattlemen are also sponsoring the Dallas County Beef Queen Contest for girls age 16-19 involved in the beef industry.

    New fair books were printed this year. They are bright orange. Families may get their copy from their club leader. There is 1 book per family; additional copies can be purchased for $2. Fair books are used for 2 years and can also be found on our website: www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/kidsteens

    The Youth Committee will reimburse $100 to 4-H members who attend.

    Last year Dallas county had 14 members attend the state 4-H Conference on the ISU campus. They enjoyed 3 days of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. You can be a part of the general workshops or more animal focused sessions in the Livestock ROUND-UP.

    You must register on-line for the conference. Links for registration are available at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa4hyouthconference. Payment will be sent to the Dallas County Extension & Outreach Office.

    This year we are going to be working with Madison, Polk and Warren Counties to offer a camp at the State 4-H Camp near Madrid. There are camp opportunities for all ages!

    Youth entering grades 4-9 in the fall of 2013 will check in on Wednesday, July 31 and go home on Saturday August 3.

    Youth entering in K- 4 this fall will check-in on August 2 and go home August 3.

    4-H members entering grades 10-12 may help at the camp as cabin leaders.

    I will send more information and registration forms soon There will be county support for the registration fee for members. If you would like more information please contact me at [email protected].

  • Historical Project Awards

    Open

    4-H Horse Show Saturday May 18 on the Dallas County Fairgrounds. This show is open to all 4-H and FFA members. Start time will be 9 am. The show bill and rules are posted to our website www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/4h

    Sheep/Market Goat

    Weigh-in All sheep and meat goats must be weighed if you want to show at the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben. Weigh in will be at the Dallas County fairground. Sat. May, 4 8-11am

    Dog Obedience Class Paula Exline is offering dog obedience classes again this year. Classes are held every Monday evening at 7 pm on the fairgrounds. If you have questions, contact Paula at 515-993-1929.

    Fundraiser for CWF CWF is a trip to Washington DC open to youth in grades 10-12. Youth in grades 8 - 10 have the opportunity to work the Sunday morning shift in the food stand during the fair. Profits from this shift will be set aside to help pay for their CWF trip in June 2014 or 2015. Anyone interested in working should contact me via email [email protected] or call 515-993-4281 so we can set a work schedule for that morning.

    Food Safety Quality

    Assurance - FSQA All 4-Hers who plan to exhibit swine, beef, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits or dairy animals at the 2013 Dallas County Fair or the Iowa State Fair are required to be FSQA certified.

    If you missed the FSQA class, you will need to call the extension office 515-993-4281 to set a time to test. I will offer another class after May 15.

    County Council The next meeting of the County

    Council will be May 8. County

    Council is for all 4-H members in

    grades 10-12. They will meet in

    the Extension Office at 6 pm.

    Join us for the 3rd Annual Clover Kids Day at the Fair Thursday, July 11th. Clover Kids will have the opportunity to present their projects to the judges and participate in activities.

    The Lik Skillet Questors will give awards for 1st, 2

    place to a 4-H restoration exhibit entered in the 2013 County Fair. Each entry must be 50 years old, accompanied by a written report, including history of project, pictures, special challenges, and future plans for the item. Selections will be made by the Lik Skillet Questors and the top winner will be a guest of the Chapter to speak about their project and be awarded a $25 gift for speaking to the chapter.     Dallas County Soil & Water Conservation District will present 2- $25 cash awards for oral conservation presentations and 2- $25 awards for 4-H conservation exhibit, entered in the 2013 Dallas County Fair. If you are interested in doing a presentation please contact me at [email protected]

  • Silent Auction The Dallas County 4-H Foundation is again planning a Silent Auction. We encourage clubs to make a donation of a basket or item with a value no greater than $25-$35. Please do not ask businesses for this donation as many of them already donate to the auction. 50% of the money made on the club item will be shared with the club. Money raised is used to support Dallas County 4-H’ers with their community service projects, equipment for the 4-H fair and to help support educational activities sponsored by 4-H.

    T-Shirts / Armbands If you are exhibiting at the county fair and would like to purchase a 4-H t-shirt, you may do so at the extension office. We have green t-shirts in youth medium to adult 2XL. T-shirts cost $8. Members showing horses must wear a 4-H armband. They are available in the extension office for $2.

    Show Apparel Remember that you will need to wear appropriate show apparel to exhibit your livestock at the fair as well as selling them at the auction. Clothing examples: 4-H shirt, plain white t-shirts, jeans, slacks and appropriate footwear. Exhibitors showing large animals must wear boots.

    Queen Contest If you are interested in entering the competition for the 2013 Dallas County Fair Queen, call Sally Kilkenny at 515-999-2295

    Club Work Assignments Each club has assignments during the fair for set-up or take-down, building ambassadors, and the 4-H food stand. Your leader will be asking you to help with these responsibilities. Working in the food stand raises money to help pay for camps, intermediate trip, state conference and project materials.

    Fair Set-up We will begin set-up for livestock pens and the community building at 8 am Saturday, July 6.

    Food Stand Volunteers Remember to bring your own cap or hair cover. State law requires hair to be covered so if you forget your own cap you will have to wear a hair net while working. Remember to bring money for any food or drink you would like to have while working.

    Food Stand Punch Cards You may purchase a food stand punch card. This $10 card is an alternative to carrying cash and can be used only at the 4-H food stand. These can be purchased at the food stand or at the extension office.

    Fairgrounds Arena 4-H clubs should remember to contact Brad Christensen at 515-240-3721 when scheduling events at the arena. 4-H members may practice riding in the arena when is not in use.

    Fair Board Election 2013 elections for the Dallas County Fair Board will be held at the Gazebo on Saturday, July 13 from 8 am – 1 pm.

    LIVESTOCK ID FORMS are due May 15 ! All animals must be identified by May 15 in the 4-H online system. After this date the program will lock out any additional entries. Go to https://iowa.4honline.com Log in with your family email and password. When you go into your member profile you will see a line at the top, left side. Click on the words ANIMALS/LIVESTOCK, choose the animal type and click on Add Animal. Fill out the information as needed for each animal. Pictures for horses are required all views are needed for state fair. Choose select and upload the picture.

  • Poultry All poultry will need to be tested and Pollorum free to be exhibited at the county fair.

    Sheep and Goat Scrapies

    Tags Female sheep or goats coming to the fair must have a scrapies tag or they will not be allowed to show. To get your scrapies tags call 1-866-873-2824.

    Pet Health Certificates Cats, dogs and ferrets must have current rabies and/or distempers certificates. A signed copy must be provided to the extension office no later than July 1 at 4:30pm to exhibit at the fair.

    Pet Reports Due A one page report on care and feeding of your pet is due to the extension office by July 9.

    End of Fair Clean-up All livestock pens and areas including rabbits and poultry need to be cleaned by the 4-H member. Cleaning in the large animal building will begin only after the auction is completed.

    Fair Auction Checks Auction checks will be ready to pick-up on Monday July 22 in the extension office or at the post fair meeting on July 23.

    Fair Check-In Check-in for horses, poultry, and swine is Tuesday evening, July 9. Horse exhibitors will receive a packet with show information at that time. Beef, check-in is Tuesday, July 9, evening or Wednesday morning. Other livestock check-in on Wednesday, July 10. Check the fair schedule in your fairbook or on the website: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/4h for specific times.

    Animal Disclosure

    Statements Disclosure statements must be completed, signed and given to the superintendent at check-in by all exhibitors showing market beef, sheep, meat goats or swine at the fair. These are available at the extension office

    Horse Stalling During Fair Each 4-H’er who is showing a horse at the county fair is required to keep at least one horse at the fairgrounds during the entire fair. Each 4-H club will be given a group of stalls to use. These stall assignments will be given to club leaders after the registration process has been completed on July 1. 4-H club leaders will then be responsible for assigning individual stalls.

    Reserve your Pens If you are bringing animals to the fair, you will need to tell the superintendent the number of pens/stalls you will need no later than June 22. E-mail addresses will be sent via email to all families.

    Bucket Calves and Returning

    Bucket Calves Youth will be interviewed on Monday July 8, from 1:30-6 p.m. with the static exhibits. Written reports are to be turned in at this time.

    Livestock Set-up Sarah Van Pelt, Horse Superintendent, asks that 4-H members showing horses “Please make time in your schedule on Saturday, July 6 to come and assist with pre-fair stall cleaning and general barn preparation between 8 am and noon. A lot of hands will make a large job easier.”

    Horse Entries for Fair 4-H’ers exhibiting horses at the county fair must have class registration complete by July 1. Instructions and forms for registration for classes will be available online at the Dallas County Extension website beginning June 6 and are to be emailed prior to July 1.     Copyright Rules The copyright rules are enforced in 4-H. They state that a copyrighted design (art, photograph, written word, logo, trademark, team insignias, etc.) cannot be displayed in a public setting without permission of the owner. It often takes a long time to be granted permission, so ask now. For more information and an example of the letter requesting this permission check out our website http://www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/4h

    Communications Posters This year communications posters will be judged at the county fair with static exhibits. The poster division allows you to communicate non-verbally through pictures and words. Use your creativity to design a poster related to one of the following themes: "4-H is...", "Join 4-H!", "Unmask your Opportunities", or "Nothing Compares". Poster size is limited to maximum of 15”x 22”. See rules on our website www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/4h under Dallas County Fair.

    Entry Tags Are available from your leader or the extension office and should be filled out and attached to your exhibit before you come to the fair.

    Photography

    Labels All photographs submitted for judging should have a photography label attached as well as the static exhibit label. These are available from your club leader or you may print them from our website www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas/4h . You will find them partway down the screen under county fair.

    Home Economic Answer Line The Answer Line is available to 4-H’ers who have questions about their child development, clothing, consumer management, food and nutrition, home improvement projects. They can be reached Monday – Friday, 9 to Noon and 1-4 pm at 1-800-262-3804.

    Cookies for Judges If you are bringing cookies, bars cake or pies to exhibit and to be judged July 8, please consider leaving some for the judges to enjoy during the day.

    Dimension Requirements Please remember to check the dimensions in the fair book for static exhibits. Oversized projects will not be considered the state fair.

    Static Exhibit Judging Exhibits will be judged on Monday July 8. See page 37 in your fair book for the judging schedule.

    Iowa 4-H Project Hot

    Sheets Don’t forget to use the Hot sheets to help you with your 4-H project. Check the website www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/projects/ Choose your project in the left column. Under each project area you will find things to help make a better exhibit, including an information form which you need to include when talking to your judge or in write up. These are the same questions as rule 12 on page 36 of your fair book . There is also an evaluation form which shows what the judge is evaluating.

    Clothing Event Day June 8

    IOWA STATE FAIR

    4-H Challenge

    Iowa State Fair Vet Camp One of the most popular programs the Iowa State Fair offers, Vet Camp is an educational, exciting, hands-on learning program aimed at encouraging children ages 10-18 about animal health, welfare and what it is like to be an animal doctor. Vet Camp is a two hour program focusing on both large and small animal veterinary medicine. Camp is FREE with paid Fair admission.

    Only 30 spots are available per session and sessions will be assigned according to date received. Registration deadline is June 1, 2013.     the Dallas County fair.

    The Iowa State Fair is looking for volunteers for this

    year’s Little Hands on Farm program. Volunteers are needed daily from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the day divided into 3 shifts. Volunteers would receive one admission ticket, one vehicle permit and a t-shirt.

    Dallas County 4-H Clothing Event Day will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at the Waukee Community Center- 445 Maple Street; Waukee, IA. If you buy your clothes or like to sew them you can participate in the clothing event. This is open to all 4-H members, both boys and girls. Participants will meet with a judge to discuss their outfit and then have the chance to model them for your families. To participate, email or call Denise Hansen by June 2 at [email protected] or 515-457-8778. More information is posted on our website www.extension.iastate.edu/dallas.

    The Dallas County Youth Committee has been awarded $1500 from the Bock Foundation in Perry to be used towards new chairs and tables for the Community Building on the Dallas County Fairgrounds.

    The estimated cost for this project is $10, 000. Since all clubs use and benefit from this building during the fair and throughout the year, the youth committee is challenging all 4-H clubs to raise $100 for this project.

    Livestock & Horticulture

    To show at the Iowa State Fair, you must have completed the 5th grade.

    Exhibitors of livestock or horticulture need not exhibit at the county fair to participate in the state fair. Entries for the State 4-H show must be made through 4H online before July 1 payment must be received by July 2.
