As a reefer container is a high-tech and expensive transport facility, it has been decided that as from now this type of damages will be monitored very closely. SURVEY REPORT

Reporting of findings of damages to interior doors on reefer containers

Please note that we have made a survey on the most frequent damages that were noted during our inspections to reefer containers. Apart from top rail damages, which are caused while handling reefers during loading activity on board of a vessel, the most frequent damage are the plastic door strikers. These plastic profiles are situated at the interior door, around the door panels, and have a function as interior gasket attachment and finishing strip of the door panel. These strips are frequently damaged at the door bottoms, either at the horizontal or the vertical position. Reason for the damage is the way of working while loading or discharging the pallets in/from the containers. A “way of working instruction” must be issued to all terminals in order to avoid these door damages and to reduce repair/operational costs. As can be seen on the first picture, prior to loading or stripping, a ramp for forklift access is placed on de threshold plate of the container.

This ramp positioning should only be done when doors are completely opened. See picture 2. The doors of the containers MUST be secured with the existing tie back rope that is fitted to the door closing gear. A tie back can be a rope or a chain pending of the container manufacturer. When a tie back is not present to the doors, then the doors MUST be secured in ”wide open position” using a rope or other means. . Do not start working without doors properly secured while completely open.

WRONG WAY OF WORKING; DOORS ARE NOT COMPLETELY OPENED. THIS WAY DOORS WILL BE DAMAGED BY FORKLIFT OR RAMP.

Doors must, after opening, be secured with the existing door tie back rope or chain. When this tie back rope or chain is not present, the doors must be secured “wide open” with a rope or by other means. Wind or not completely levelled container can cause automatic closing of the doors.

TIE BACK THAT IS PRESENT TO BOTTOM DOOR GEAR, USE THIS ROPE OR CHAIN TO SECURE DOORS TO PREVENT THEM FROM CLOSING WHILE RAMP IS FITTED.

When doors are properly secured then loading or stripping can start. The results of not working as described above can be a very costly thing for the shipping line. Doors are not only getting damaged by the ramp but also by the forklifts. We noted many cases where the doors were damaged as a result of improper fitting of the ramp to the threshold rail. This must be done with great care. Another case is loading or stripping of the pallets when the pallets hook behind the inner doors. All the above is caused with not properly opened doors.

The repair cost as a result of the above is substantial. Approximately 60 to 75% of all containers inspected by us during in-service and off-hire suffer from this kind of damage. The repair per case is pending on the damage. The damage as you can see on the picture above will have a repair cost of € 225. It will only take a small effort but BIG discipline to prevent damaging containers as mentioned in this report. The cost saving however will be enormous and will end on year period with high figures.
