Dance4 is an international centre for the development of 21st century dance. As well as this season’s events, Dance4 provides an ongoing dance development offer across the East Midlands. We work with a range of cultural partners to create exciting opportunities for people from all walks of life to experience and engage in the richness of dance.

Supported by all the local authorities at County, City and District level in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The start of 2013 has been our busiest and most exciting spring ever. Nottdance was a great success, where we presented the fresh and new perspectives in dance internationally, whilst our annual U.Dance season across the Midlands platformed some exceptional young performers.

This summer we build on the success of the spring with opportunities to experience some work from Nottdance and present new work in extraordinary places by artists from the UK and beyond. We showcase the talents and ideas of members of the public and make sure you know about the great dance you can see across the East Midlands.

Come and join us for a great summer of dance.

DANCE4 sCOREs AROuND THE CITY Nottdance festival 2013 presented many opportunities to experience the City of Nottingham through the eyes of inspired choreographers. We thought we’d give you an opportunity to experience these scores further. Go on a walk of discovery…

Small Sequences

for the City

Created as a series of four business cards, the Step By Step guides invite you to explore your dance as you go from here to there.Small experiments that you can do anytime, any place. Whilst walking you can focus your attention to moving in subtle or unexpected ways that will question, ‘Have you started dancing yet?’

VANEssA gRAssE (ITALY / UK)

Routes & Retracing Routes

Developed from her 2012 walking project Routes, with local residents in Leicester, international choreographer Vanessa Grasse has created a guide for those wanting to explore or reconnect with walking experiences. These simple guides, one for the original project area, the second more generally applicable can be used as the staring point for taking your own creative walk.

‘A treasured view and walk in a busy place that I can now see and feel a different connection to’ – Walk Participant

‘I have history with the city of Nottingham. Longer than my own life span, stretching out through the lives of my family. This history is rooted in the city, interwoven in its architecture, culture and its drinking establishments’ – Robert Clark

Dance4 Associate Robert invites you to an experience that is both a family portrait and a pub-crawl. This guide to a scored walk will lead you into the hazy world of Nottingham’s nightlife to discover sides of both the city and Robert’s family that are touching, interesting, legend and taboo.

Spill: A Playground of Dance

Highly playful and physical, and at times teasingly comical – this is a cheeky dance celebration of the child within. Combining quirky, dynamic dance with high-energy street gymnastics, the dancers blaze a colourful trail across the structures and landscapes of the playground. Each performance is unique, as the show scrambles around, over, under and through swings, slides and roundabouts. Kids will love it, grown-ups will love it too!

A Lyrical Dance Concert Having a bash at changing the world, one pop hit at a time. Through dance. Yep, dance.

In a mixed-up whirlwind of glamorous divas, guitar solos and gangster rappers, A Lyrical Dance Concert revisits the lyrics of well-loved pop music and transforms their powers through an unlikely choreographic lens. Inspired by the common-knowledge nature of pop songs, A Lyrical Dance Concert moves through sincere recital, detailed dancing, absurd wrestling match, raucous sing-along to sentimental slow-dance. Somehow, suddenly the unexpected pairings of Mariah Carey and Dire Straits, punky shouting and angelic warbling come together to form an experience that is spirited, challenging and most of all, a real fun time.

RAJNI sHAH PROJECTs / bECkY EDMuNDs (UK) Glorious (Film Screening)

In 2011 Rajni Shah and collaborators first performed Glorious – a haunting and unusual new musical at Nottdance 11. Each performance involved a new set of musicians and local residents – dismantling, reinventing and re-assembling the raw material. The show is about people, what it means to live in a place and to gather together in a theatre.

Glorious was reimagined in London, Newcastle, Mons (Belgium) and Lancaster. Video artist Becky Edmunds has made a documentary response to these performances and several of the artists will be in attendance for a short informal dialogue following the screening.

‘Glorious felt like a place to come to a rest in. A slow building work that crept up on me and managed to transform my state completely by the time it had finished... Glorious settled down into the stage, and allowed the audience the space and time to come to it of their own will’ – Alice Mackenzie (Choreographer / Writer) (Bellyflop)

DWAYNE sIMMs L. LAW‘Tonight Mathew I am going to be… the man who went to Israel with a plan, forgetting his pen.’ Original intentions were to visit Jerusalem and experience the Jewish communitas (Hasidic). Instead Dwayne became deeply occupied by the cacophony that emerged, through both the sound and visuals from the locals and visitors.

subHAsH VIMAN MorphedThe identity of an Indian man is a confluence of complex imagery: He moves from the Oriental exotica to an embodiment of spirituality, a Bollywood super-star to an IT geek. He has evolved into a new breed through globalization and migration. Using a grotesque movement, the body is caught between the past and present, mythology and reality, sensuous and the mundane – the more it pulls away, the more it morphs to a new form.

gERRARD MARTIN D-llusionD-llusion explores perceptions of body-image as seen through a young woman’s eyes. As she battles with her psyche, she perceives herself through media sound-bites and through her ‘mirror image’. An unhealthy obsession with her reflected image results in distortion. Is the reflection in the mirror an apparition, a psychological nemesis; is the image real, or a figment of a delusional mind?

AAkAsH ODEDRA (UK)

Rising

An emerging new star in British dance, Rising is an evening of stunning solo performance by Aakash Odedra.

Individual works have been choreographed for him by internationally renowed artists Russell Maliphant, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Akram Khan. The evening opens with a classical Kathak variation and each piece ingeniously uses Aakash’s background in Kathak and Bharatanatyam to create a new flavour of contemporary dance, complemented with beautiful lighting by Michael Hulls and Willy Cessa.

Commissioned by DanceXchange, Sampad, Eastman, The Hat Factory, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Dance, South East Dance, New Art Exchange, The Place, The Curve Theatre, Leicester and funded by Arts Council England and Akademi.

JOE MORAN (UK) Forward

A fresh voice in British dance choreographer Joe Moran (semi-finalist Place Prize 2012) brings three distinctive new dance works to Lakeside Arts Centre.

Beginning in the gallery, Survey is a compelling solo for dancer Marina Collard which contrasts abstract movement against the physicality of the dancer. In the theatre, Obverse, commissioned for The Place Prize, is a powerful trio danced to a striking score in which dancer’s physical and perceptual virtuosity is tested from one moment to the next. The Swarm Duet plays on the edges of chance to set free the poetry and immediacy of dance.

NEW ART Club Feel About

Your Body

An uplifting, life-affirming and hilarious spectacle about how we ‘feel’ about our bodies. Of course the show title has a double meaning – it’s sexy AND intellectual. Expect silliness, see a man talk to his bottom and find out what not to do during a heart attack.

Warning: This show has already left some people feeling ‘a little bit dirty’; contains some brief nudity (long enough to see ‘the works’); contains some brief dancing (silly and emotional). Loved by audiences and critics alike New Art Club return with another beautifully engineered blend of physical and verbal lunacy. Suitability: Ages 16+

THE DANCE4COMMISSION COLLECTIVEDance4 Commission Collective: the collective effort and commitment from individuals who pool resources to support the creation of something extraordinary.

At Dance4 we strive to commission, support and present work by the most exciting artists working in dance and performance across the UK and the world.

We invite you to become part of this work. By joining the CommissionCollective and together with other individuals you will direct the commissioning process for a new choreographic work and collectively you will become an integral part of its development.

The newly created work will be produced by Dance4, but owned by the Commission Collective who may decide to hold a private performance or look to present the work publicly.

With an individual contribution of just £100 you can be a member of this special collective and become a private owner of an innovative choreographic dance performance.Dance4 is an international centre for the development of extraordinary 21st century dance. An internationally recognised, experimental danceorganisation Dance4 has a strong regional programme and is a unique voice in the UK dance sector.
