Fessa’ Hook’s new Book
The new Carolina Beach Music Encyclopedia is for
those who’ve been looking for the charts for 2007 to 2011,
and for those who never got the *big,* 1,000 page, two-
volume encyclopedia, but who enjoy looking at the Top
40 Beach songs of each year, reading about some of the
unusual events of the year below the charts, and perhaps
pencilling in your OWN favorites missing from those
charts.
For DJs, this is the perfect accessory on the air or in
the club....all the charts for each year, back to back. It’s
only 100 pages, thin, you can slip it in the side pocket of
your computer bag.
It’s priced at $9.95. You order it and it’s shipped
within 48 hours.
Order yours at www.beachshag.com . You’ll see the
link there on the front page that takes you directly to the
order page.
Enjoy. --Fessa Hook

The National Shag Championship Preliminaries Kicked Offin Myrtle Beach with Shaggin’ with the Stars (Pt 1 of 3)
2001 was crowded once again
January 27th and 28th for the 2012
National Shag Championships and
all the pomp and circumstance which
go with this yearly ritual.
Six divisions of steppers compete
for honors as National Shag champs,
but the celebration doesn’t stop
there.
The National Shag Dance Cham-
pionships (NSDC) started “Shaggin
With the Stars” several years ago to
get the local Myrtle Beach commu-
nity more involved in the NSDC and
raise money for the Beth Mitchell
Scholarship.
Local “stars” and community lead-
ers are paired with professional shag
dancers and given only 12 hours of
practice time before competing at
NSDC Prelims each January. The
contestants are judged 2/3 by shag
dance judges and 1/3 by audience
applause.

A true native of Myrtle Beach,
O’Neil McCoy is General Manager
of “Broadway at the Beach.” He is a
graduate of Myrtle Beach High
School and was a member of the state
championship tennis team. He has
a BS and Masters degree from
Clemson University. He likes golf,
tennis, and spending time as a newly
wed with wife Jewell.
O’Neil’s partner was Autumn
Jones who apparently inspired his
fearlessness to the point he was will-
ing to try on a Drop Belly Roll for
the contest.

Matt Free & Marla Branson
Marla Branson is a meteorologist
with WMBF News, Originally from
Stuttgart, Arkansas, she’s a graduate
of Ole Miss and grad school alumni
of Mississippi State. She loves to play
golf, go on “staycations” on the Grand
Strand and is learning to surf from
her husband Michael Walter.
One thing’s for sure in looking at
these photos, the Stars’ coaches went
beyond expectations to encourage
their dance partners into some ex-
traordinary dance moves.
We’re sure the move above is a
Shag move, if she’d done that on her
surfboard, she’d have been overboard.
Christie Turner is with Re/Max
Ocean Forest, Originally from Boise,
Bill Barber (senior) & Christie Turner (Star)
Idaho, Christie moved to the Grand
Strand in 1991.
It must have been part of her des-
tiny. She later met and married her
husband Tracy on the Grand Strand
where he also sells real estate. They
have two sons, Nick & Nate, who she
considers her hobby when not work-
ing.
Christie has done work with
Bethany Christian Services and has
been active in PTAs serving as vice
president and was secretary of the
Relief Society.
Her partner Bill Barber, below,
had her pushin’ the envelope during

Church in Myrtle Beach.
Jonathan and his wife Rebecca
have a son and are expecting a daugh-
ter in December.
He likes all kinds of music, run-
ning on the beach, and reading.
To show what a small world it re-
ally is, his father-in-law, Doug Neal,
played with Bob Meyer & the
Rivieras on their 1964 beach music
hit “Behold.”
Jonathan exhibited a surplus of
‘attitude’ throughout the contest, as
can be seen as Mandy holds on in
the picture below.
Lisa Robertson-Schmittle has been
a member of Myrtle Beach’s finest for
over eleven years. PFC Lisa is an in-
tegral part of their street patrol.
Originally from Huntington,
West Virginia, she enjoys the beach,
boating, and motorcycles.
Lisa is also a huge Marshall Uni-
versity fan. She’s the mother of two
sons, and a soon to be grandmother
in October.
After all the excitement which ac-
companied Shaggin’ with the Stars you’d have to wonder, ‘how much
more can there be?’ It was just the
beginning.
There were still the Non-Profes-

Clay McClinton (Delbert’s son) appears for the
first time as part of a Beach Music compilation. Clay
appears in part through Cassie Fox, Promotional
Director for Shanty’s Records, who had been talking
to Clay’s agent.
Mark Roberts brings a new song, already chart-
ing, outside his recent CDs. “Don’t Let the Sun
Catch You Crying” was a breath-stopper at the re-
cent Carolina Beach Music Awards in North Myrtle
Beach and the Alabama Theatre.
Clifford Curry has supplied “I Love Women” from
the 80s and “Set Me Free” from the 90s. CEO David
Wade includes them because, in his words, “they’re
both forgotten songs.”
Lakeside Drive Band doesn’t have a CD - yet. But
both of their songs are already Beach charted, “Candy
Girl” went to #1, and “I’m Still In Love with You,” a
collaboration with Gene Pharr of the Continentals is
riding up the charts now.
Gary Lowder, who fronts for the Carolina Break-
ers, appears solo here on an original composition,
“Been There Before.”

www.shantysrecords.com
Mark Roberts was born into a musical family in
Georgetown, SC . He was inspired musically by both
his mother and father and grew up with a strong passion
for Rock & Roll, Blues, and Motown music, making
him the singer and songwriter he is today. Renowned
musicians Mark Farner, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder,
Jimmy Hall, Michael McDonald, Bobby Kimball, Daryl
Hall, James Taylor, Elton John and Steve Perry influenced
Mark’s desire for focus, range, and style.
Mark has been lead vocalist in several bands including
Spanky's Gang, Matrix, Alter Ego, The Next, and Heart
and Soul. Mark joined Wilmington, NC band, Heart
and Soul, in 1991, which
was subsequently winner
of The Carolina Beach
Music Award for Best New
Artist in 2000.
Mark was nominated
for Male Vocalist in 2003
just before his break from
Heart and Soul. He found
a window of opportunity
with a well-known
musician already established
in Beach Music going on to claim Carolina Beach Music
Awards for Group of the Year, Song of the Year, Male
Vocalist, and Entertainer of the Year. Mark also won
Smoothie of the Year for 2005 and 2006.
Compilation albums Mark has recorded on include
All Aboard 4 in 2004 with “Dixie Moon,” Totally Beach
for Kids, a benefit CD for "Victory Junction Gang" in
2005, Soul Street Cafe with “Doesn't Get Any Better,”
and Now and Then from Judy's House of Oldies with
“Head Over Heels In Love” in 2007.
In June of 2007, Mark joined songwriter and
entertainer, Jim Quick and the Coastline Band then
recorded his first solo album in August of 2007 which
included two original songs he wrote.

West Coast writer Arny Bailey says
he first heard Becki Sue and Her Big
Rockin’ Daddies years ago in some
little dive on the outskirts of Seattle -
- ain’t that where all blues bands
come from, somewhere on the fringe?
A couple of the Big Rockin’ Dad-
dies’ band members first formed un-
der the banner of the T-Boy Neal
Band in 2001. Traveling the South
both to make a buck and to immerse
themselves in the culture which called

to them, they landed at the former
King Blues Festival in Helena Arkan-
sas, now known as the Arkansas Blues
and Heritage Festival, as well as actor
Morgan Freeman’s Ground Zero
Blues Club where Highways 61 and
49 intersect -- the legendary ‘Cross-
roads.’
T-Boy Neal was the first in 2002
to spot Becki’s talent when her heard
her singing Karaoke. He asked her
to learn a handful of Blues tunes so
she could sing with his
band. Within two weeks
she’d learned 30 songs.
For awhile they played as
the Tim Sherman Band,
then the T-Boy Neal
Band, finally becoming
Becki Sue & Her Big
Rockin’ Daddies.
The first tune Becki
Sue ever performed pub-
licly was Pat Benatar’s
“Hit Me With Your Best
Shot.” Tom heard her singing Lee
Ann Rimes’ “Blue” one night and
started bringing her blues tunes to
hear.
Becki Sue had no idea that the
Blues could be so Cool! (She appar-
ently didn’t follow Pat Benatar’s ca-
reer, she her True Love blues CD with
Roomful of Blues in 1991. “Payin’
the Cost to Be the Boss” made the
Top 15 on the Beach and Shag charts
for the year).
Becki particularly liked Lou Ann
Barton, Angela Strehli, and Marcia
Ball’s Dreams Come True album from
1990.
The band played together with-

out changes for seven years - an amaz-
ing feat in and of itself. Since then,
there’ve been a number of substitu-
tions with everyone wishing everyone
else the best.
They won five local Blues Awards
in a single year, picking up more and
more fans along the way.
Becki kept her day job! Unusual.
She wasn’t willing to roll the dice on a
full-time blues career.
Altogether they’ve recorded three
CDs, pictured throughout the story.
Of those, we found several with
potential for West Coast Swing, Bop, Shag, and other
free-style enthusiasts.
In particular:
“Easy Go”
“How Much Longer”
“Just Your Fool”
“Mean Mistreater”
“Mr. Lies”
“Natural Born Lover”
“No I Ain’t Gonna Let You Go”

"T-Boy Neal" is lead guitarist for Becki with prob-
ably the most experience of the band.
He was leader for the Capital City’s legendary blues
band "The Harmonic Tremors". In 1982 he moved to
Seattle and immersed himself in the thriving Pioneer
Square blues scene. From 1982 to 1996, Tom joined

cians, performing and recording with John Hodgkin in
"The Slackmasters" and "Drivin' Wheel"; with Mike
Lynch in "Nitelife"; with Portland-based keyboardist,
D.K.. Stewart; with Doug Lynn in "The Led Jaxson

Olympia's "The Steamers"; and as leader of "The T-Boy

The Legendary Blues Band, Roy Buchanan and James
Harman, among others. He has shared the stage with
Mark DuFresne, Curtis Salgado, Jimmy McCracklin,
Larry Davis, Cash McCall, Sugar Ray Norcia, and blues
