presentation It has been almost forty years since Jimi Hendrix died, and guitar is still mainly a solo instrument. The instrument that “plays the solos”, a solo instrument, just like the bass. Still today, members of rock bands have very well-defined, sometimes even stereotyped, roles. The guitarist that “plays the solos”, Jimi Hendrix style, the rhythmic guitarist, the bass player, the drummer, etcetera: these elements put together make up a rock band. We are very far from the concept of orchestra, a combination of instruments that, in their complex articulation, build up a single (but complex) timbre. Can we think of an orchestra made up of fifty guitar and bass players which should not sound as the sum of different solo players, but as a new, organized and harmonized timbric fusion? Can electric instruments coexist with acoustic instruments? Can an orchestra of guitars and basses prove to be just a simple performance event? And, something that has already been done and seen... just like everything else. But, maybe, not everything has been said yet, and past experiments only lead to a combination of solo instruments. The aim of the project is that of giving food for thought, a chance to experiment, and try and find a new key for the score, a key to build a homogeneous and meaningful “whole”. This is why we decided to work on this, to abandon commonplace and stereotypes and find a deep meaning, a profound timbre, a new way of writing. Classical scores are clearly divided between “solo" and “all" moments, a coexistence and a dichotomy that justifies the importance of the solo instrument and its fusion with the rest. Can we reproduce this dichotomy for an orchestra of guitars and basses? Maybe, but we need to write “orchestrally”, to teach each player the importance of being a fundamental part of a bigger whole, spreading up the concept to involve architecture, installation and society, be a visual part of an expanded whole, made up of buildings, trajectories, audiences, people, sky, space, light, air. The most difficult thing for a solo player is to limit oneself, being able to measure out one’s sound for it to merge with the rest, for the musician to let themselves go to an embracing sound, of which they are a fundamental but not main part. We want to apply our analysis to a higher level, not only to sound. We want to start with the immersion in a place, a people, a universal mass made up of neutral territory, air, sky and breath. We want this event to take place in a square, or in the street, to represent our fusion with what surrounds us. Maybe, starting from a more “absolute” level, from the immersion in what embraces, contains and justifies us, we will be able to abandon the stereotype that, despite himself, the best solo guitarist of all times created: Jimi Hendrix, the only player who could cover all the roles of an orchestra with one instrument.

practical info The electric orchestra of guitars and basses coordinated by Dario Giovannini from Aidoru Associazione is re-built each time in a 3/4 days workshop held in the town where the project will be repeated. SOLI CONTRO TUTTI debuted in July 2010 at Santarcangelo 40 International Festival of Street Theatre and repeated at: Es.terni International Festival of Contemporary Creation, Terni Itinerario Stabile Music Arts Landscape Performance Architecture Festival. Cesena MEI Meeting of Independent Labels, Faenza To be admitted to the orchestra, you only need to have your own instrument and an amp, and be available to participate in the rehearsals and on the day of the performance. You do not need any specific technical and musical training, as the orchestra and the repertoire will be organized according to the characteristics of the musicians. It is important that your amp is not too big, as musicians will be asked to walk to the performance location, carrying their instrument and amp. The outfit musicians will have to wear for the performance will be defined during rehearsals. DARIO GIOVANNINI bio Composer, guitarist, pianist, accordionist and arranger. Born in Cesena in 1979.
