hands on demonstrations and review of photographic images. Every element of the theory introduced will be followed by a hands on demonstration and applied directly by the participants so as to further their knowledge. 4. Photography Language and Development of a Photographic Project ! !COURSE DESCRIPTION

The workshop is dedicated to those participants who are already familiar with photography techniques as well as the postproduction process and are in the stages of planning a consistent photographic project.

Several possible approaches to the photographic project will be examined (documentary, conceptual, aesthetic, commercial) with reference to the photographic thought and authors. The participants will be invited to show their individual projects and will be encouraged to follow their own creative vision.

Following the initial brainstorming phase, the participants will be asked to choose a subject of interest and a photographic style befitting their communicative intent.

The participants will be guided in the creation of images which will converge into a photographic project. !PROGRAM

THEORY AND ANALYSIS • Introduction to photographic projects: what is a good photographic project? • Different objectives and stylistic approaches (documentary, conceptual, aesthetic, commercial) • Signs of semiotics, visual anthropology and theory of perception • Individual brainstorming • Examining various styles and authors as a confrontation with one’s own work PRACTICE • Planning the images and style of the project • Production, postproduction and gathering the images as a coherent project !

REQUIREMENTS Camera, preferably with manual controls and an individual portable computer with software for the management and elaboration of digital images. Basics of photographic technique, files management and postproduction are required.

5. Photographic Portraiture in Studio and Location !!COURSE DESCRIPTION

This workshop is a in-depth analysis of portrait photography through its techniques and ideas. Starting with the subject analysis, it will be discussed the choice of a specific photographic concept; the workshop follows on with the study of portraiture

techniques in studio and location and will end with the review, editing and finalization of the images. In the first part of the workshop, the theoretical one, the workflow described will be studied; in the second part the participants ideas will be developed in

practice, both in studio or location. !PROGRAM

SUBJECT ANALYSIS • portrait type (corporate, artistic, personal, editorial) • concept analysis and formulating an idea • iconographic and location research • personal and somatic characteristics of the subject • client relationship (estimates, professionalism and style) SHOOTING • relationship with the subject • shooting techniques • makeup, styling • studio and location FOLLOWING THE SHOOTING • revision and selection of images, proof presentation • final touches and product delivery (possible choice of printing and presentation) • relationship with the client; prices and marketplace !

REQUIREMENTS Camera, preferably with manual controls and an individual portable computer with software for the management and elaboration of digital images. Basics of photographic technique, files management and postproduction are required.

6. Photo-editing and Images Portfolio !!COURSE DESCRIPTION

The workshop introduces photographic editing as the activity of images selection for a specific communicative purpose. The editing process is referred both to choosing the best images from a specific project as well as selecting images coming from multiple sources which will converge into a unique iconographic process.

The workshop will mostly deal with the viewing of a complete series of images shot in a specific context and the selection of those images most suited for a precise communicative intent, their ordering and proposal about of their postproduction possibilities. !PROGRAM

EDITING THEORY • objectives and communicative context, destination, interlocutors • analysis of photographic magazines and books with consideration on the images choice PRACTICE • analysis of a complete shooting series with editing proposals • individual editing exercise of the same catalogue of images by the participants and comparison of the final results • collective editing exercise !

REQUIREMENTS The participants are required to bring a series of images (images should be shot by the students or other photographers as long as these have not already been selected) for the editing process to be executed by other participants of the workshop. A personal computer is required with a program for cataloguing and viewing the images (for example Adobe Bridge® or Adobe Lightroom®). !
